    To help support first-time fosters and adopters, Royal Canin is teaming up with kitten expert and Internet sensation Hannah Shaw, The Kitten Lady, to offer Catology, an educational kitten care series designed to provide support and resources to people who have welcomed a newly fostered or adopted kitten into their home.

    The free, interactive livestreams will cover the most important kitten topics – caring for neonates, feeding and nutrition, kitten behavior and socializing, among others.

    In this episode, participants will learn:

      • How to provide basic preventative care like dewormers and probiotics
      • How to deal with GI issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and parasites

    Webinar – Assessing Pain and Quality of Life in Shelter Animals – The AAWA

    We will review quality of life concepts and discuss methods for the assessment of subjective states, including pain.  The goal of the session is to encourage attendees to develop assessment tools for their own facilities and to consider the perspective of individual animals in making outcome decisions.  Finally, attendees will consider how quality of life assessment can be used to consider animal welfare dilemmas. This session is designed for veterinarians, shelter staff, and shelter leadership.  Attendees will be able to:

    • Define quality of life and describe how quality of life may be measured in companion animals
    • Recognize signs of pain and distress in cats and dogs
    • List two assessment tools that can be used to assess pain in cats and dogs
    • Give at least one example of a situation at their organization or facility where considering quality of life could help make care or outcome decisions.

    This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

    This program (both live and recorded) has been approved for:

    • 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval
    • 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit

    In advance of this webinar on Thursday 4/23, we are asking that you view this 30 minute recording by Dr. Kate Hurley, “Maintaining Live Outcomes During the COVDI-19 Pandemic…and Beyond”. This recording is about best practices for balancing intakes and outcomes during the pandemic and using insights gained during the pandemic to guide best practices going forward. The webinar on Thursday will then be a roundtable of conversations with four shelters who have streamlined these programs and are thriving.     Thursday May 14th from 2-3pm CST (12 – 1 PM Pacific, 3 – 4 PM EST), we will be holding National Rounds with the plan to continue any discussions that may come up after Amanda Arrington’s presentation this past Tuesday. Please note Amanda will not be in attendance so it will be amongst the normal rounds group.
