Intake Management for Shelters During COVID-19

sm-admin KSMP · March 31, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic requires that every one of us weigh the risk to our staff and community of performing an activity vs the benefit of continuing to offer that service. We must also endeavor to maintain the capacity to respond to emergency situations and concerns that arise as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  This leads to the need for us to define what is absolutely essential, and what services can be adjusted or postponed until it is safe to continue.

As we pivot our programs to mitigate risks and maintain our capacity to provide needed services, it is vital we communicate with our stakeholders how our role has changed in response to the pandemic and what we are doing to safeguard our organization and the welfare of our communities.

In this mini-course we’ll cover:

3 Key Points:

  1. Limit intake to emergencies only
  2. Shape the Path: Provide community members with the tools they need to help secure positive alternatives to intake so the public can safely respond to animal needs
  3. Clearly communicate the change in services through multiple channels
