DESCRIPTION:Learn new skills so you are better prepared and more effective at supporting the largest minority group in the world in training their pets! \n3 Sessions To Support Your Learning! Instructed by Veronica Sanchez \nPeople with disabilities are the largest minority group and over a billion people are living with disabilities worldwide. Many people with disabilities have pet dogs so it is important for professional pet dog trainers to have skills and knowledge on how to accommodate clients with disabilities. With a set of new skills and supportive knowledge you can establish yourself in your marketplace as the professional to call! \nIn this workshop you will learn how to assess the accessibility of your training classes and implement improvements that can make a big difference for your clients. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nHow to better communicate with clients with disabilities.\nYou will explore challenges clients with disabilities encounter in dog training and learn strategies to accommodate training so they can be successful working with their dogs.\nYou will also review different instructional techniques to help clients with various kinds of disabilities best benefit from your training services.\n\nThe workshop is divided between three sessions. Each session is a combination of video presentations\, live discussions as well as online discussions in a virtual group for attendees. \nWorkshop participants will also have the opportunity to participate in each live session and for those who choose the working spot registration there will be an opportunity after each of the three sessions to submit short written projects and hands-on training video for instructor feedback. \nSession Details \nDay 1 – Understanding Disability\, Accessibility and Communicating Effectively with Clients with Disabilities.\nWednesday\, June 22\, 2022 at 6 p.m. Eastern Time \nLearning Objectives: \n\nFacts about disabilities – statistics\, categories\nDisability etiquette\nPeople first language and Identity first language\nStrategies for communicating with clients with different kinds of disabilities\nAssessing and improving accessibility of training classes\nImproving accessibility in virtual lessons\nQ&A session\n\nHomework (short approximately 250 word – one page essay): What are accessibility challenges attendees encounter in their work? What are some strategies they could use to address these? \nDay 2 – Accommodating Dog Training for Clients with Disabilities. \nThursday\, June 23\, 2022\, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time \nLearning Objectives: \n\nTraining accommodation strategies for different kinds of disabilities\nAccommodations for clients with limited hand use\nAccommodations for clients with mobility impairments\nLoose leash walking\nSafety and fall prevention strategies\nAccommodations for clients with sensory impairments\nQ&A session with a homework review\n\nHomework: Work on teaching a dog positioning in front of you (facing you) and by your left side while seated (from beginning to the end of training session) use a rolling chair if possible. Repeat the process while wearing gloves. Submit up to 3 min. video of your training (optional). Participants can share what the challenges were\, what might be some accommodation ideas in the discussion group. \nDay 3 – Accommodating Instructional Strategies for Clients with Disabilities. \nFriday\, June 24\, 2022\, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDelivering instruction and planning lessons\nInstructional scaffolding\nMulti-modal teaching\nGraphic organizers\nChecklists\nReducing and modifying content\nImportant take aways\nResources\nWhere to learn more\nQ&A session with a homework review\n\nHomework: Create a graphic organizer or multi-level checklist for a common training challenge. \nCEUs\nPPAB – 6\nCCPDT – Auditor Spot 6 | Working Spot 9\nIAABC (Pending)\nKPA (Pending) \nInstructor\nVeronica Sanchez M.Ed CABC\, CPDT-KA is the founder of the Service Dog Coaching Certificate\, an educational program for pet dog trainers offered by Cooperative Paws. She teaches professional dog trainers how to train service dogs and how to incorporate service dog training into their pet dog training business. Veronica has been training pets\, service\, and therapy dogs for more than 20 years. She has supported owner-trainers training service dogs for mobility\, hearing\, mental health\, neurological problems and dual guide-mobility work. \nVeronica has a Masters degree in Education and a Bachelors in Psychology from George Mason University. She also has a Certificate in Brain Research in Education from the University of Washington.
