She began pursuing her own formal exploration of spirituality as an anthropology major at Princeton University and conducted fieldwork for her thesis while living at an ashram (spiritual center) in India in 1996. As a veterinarian\, she is interested in highlighting the spiritual connection between all living beings. \nJyothi has completed certifications in trauma-sensitive mindfulness\, advanced trauma-sensitive meditation\, deep listening\, DEI\, and since 2019\, has been receiving training in Buddhist meditation practices and philosophy. Councilmember Hinds will discuss his District 10 2025 Pilot Pet Deposit Assistance Program and his passion for keeping people and pets together in their homes. \nRecent research has shown that housing insecurity for tenants has dramatically increased in the last several years as rents have skyrocketed and eviction rates have climbed higher than even pre-pandemic levels. Housing insecurity directly impacts peoples’ ability to acquire and keep pets. Some cats love humans but the separation from what is familiar coupled with exposure to a new and scary environment can cause them to shut down. Others may be poorly socialized and need assistance to form a positive association with humans. It is our duty to help them have the best possible well-being while in our care\, and human-animal interaction as enrichment can play an important role in that. But how to bridge that gap from fear to friendship can be confusing/frustrating – some efforts can seem to do more harm than good. It can be difficult to know what approach to use\, how to guide staff and volunteers on how to use it\, and to know if your efforts are really helping. This webinar will guide attendees on a formal program for gaining the trust of the more fearful cats in your care\, and a method for tracking their progress and welfare so that case managers can know when to implement additional interventions. \nAbout the speaker: Jacklyn Ellis is board certified by the Animal Behavior Society as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist\, is Certified in Shelter Behavior – Cat by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and is the Director of Behavior at Toronto Humane Society. She earned her PhD in Animal Welfare at the Atlantic Veterinary College\, University of Prince Edward Island\, where she conducted research on methods for reducing stress in shelter cats. We’ll review symptoms\, disease severity\, prognosis\, and prevention strategies\, empowering participants to confidently care for their feline friends. \nGuest Speaker:  Dr. Rachael Wooten\, Medical Director\, One Tail at a Time\n\n \nDr. Rachael Wooten\, a passionate shelter medicine veterinarian with seven years of experience\, proudly represents her Black and Puerto Rican heritage. She earned her DVM from Tuskegee University (2017) and after graduation she completed a shelter medicine specialty internship at the University of Illinois CVM. She began pursuing her own formal exploration of spirituality as an anthropology major at Princeton University and conducted fieldwork for her thesis while living at an ashram (spiritual center) in India in 1996. As a veterinarian\, she is interested in highlighting the spiritual connection between all living beings. \nJyothi has completed certifications in trauma-sensitive mindfulness\, advanced trauma-sensitive meditation\, deep listening\, DEI\, and since 2019\, has been receiving training in Buddhist meditation practices and philosophy. DESCRIPTION:Canine hyperarousal behaviors like rapid jumping and grabbing are common challenges in animal shelters\, impacting dog welfare\, adoption prospects\, and the safety of both shelter personnel and animals. Without effective intervention\, these behaviors can escalate\, reducing a dog’s chances of finding and keeping a forever home. Learn how to identify triggers\, create tailored behavior modification plans\, and implement practical strategies that support the well-being of shelter dogs while enhancing safety and adoption success. \nGuest Speaker: Ferdie Yau \nFerdie Yau (MA\, CPDT-KA) is an animal trainer and ecologist who founded Sits & Wiggles Dog Training in New York City in 2009. He specializes in treating complex canine behavior problems and consults with animal shelters nationwide. He is the Staff Trainer at the Humane Society of Westchester and lead workshop instructor for CATCH Canine Trainers Academy. Before working with dogs\, Ferdie trained cooperative care behaviors with dozens of species at the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York and developed the behavior and enrichment plan to treat stereotypies in the Central Park Zoo polar bears. He holds a BS in Ecology from the University of Michigan and an MA in Conservation Biology from Columbia University. His experience includes working in environmental education\, wildlife rehabilitation\, jaguar research and conservation\, and restoring heavily disturbed forest and aquatic ecosystems.
