DESCRIPTION:Intake is up\, but so is innovation and positive disruption. In this series of four dynamic roundtable conversations\, frontline workers leading change across California and the country will highlight collaborative approaches to removing barriers that come between people and pets and dish on creative solutions they’re implementing to ensure pets spend more nights at home\, not in the shelter.  \nPull up a seat and bring your questions for our panelists to discuss around the table on August 17\, 24\, 31 and September 7 from 9-10 a.m. PDT. What does it look like when practices and policies are built around love\, fairness\, and solidarity with our community and in support of our shared goals? Four organizations will explore how community-centered adoption initiatives have opened their doors and jumpstarted positive outcome cycles for animals and more positive\, connection-driven cultures among shelter teams.  \nPanelists   \n\nCole Wakefield (Good Shepherd Humane Society)\nCaitlin Daly (SPCA of Erie)\nJoy Smith (FieldHaven Feline Center)\nDenise Woodside (SEAACA)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_xEvcITQPSHale7-9mKFvLg

How much of what we believe about why animals end up at our shelters is incomplete or based on oversimplified data? The reasons people surrender their pets are varied and often interwoven\, and so are the alternative solutions that can help animals stay in their homes.   \nAt this roundtable\, we’re diving into accessible interventions that divert intake to keep more pets and people together and the processes for determining and delivering those services in a welcoming\, judgment-free manner that ensures community members can reach the support they need when they need it: before the crisis.  \nPanelists   \n\nLori Weise (Downtown Dog Rescue)\nRita Ortiz (Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter) \nDonell Randolph (Friends of Oakland Animal Services) \nKristen Hassen (Outcomes Consulting)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_xEvcITQPSHale7-9mKFvLg

Self-awareness\, personal accountability\, and relationship cultivation have been foundational as Jose navigates his career and life outside of work. At his first job with one of the largest animal shelters in the Arizona\, Jose learned the importance of developing emotional intelligence\, communication\, and people skills to build meaningful relationships that inspire and motivate people to work better together. In 2017\, after a decade of working to transform that organization\, Jose joined Best Friends Animal Society\, a national nonprofit organization where he served as the first Senior Director of People and Culture. \nAt Best Friends\, Jose was responsible for leading dynamic teams\, including Human Resources\, Learning and Staff Development\, Employee Experience\, and Organizational Culture initiatives\, and served as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Leadership Team. Through collaboration\, change\, and innovative management\, Jose and his team stewarded a workplace culture that was employee- and value-centric. These efforts positioned Best Friends to win multiple Top Workplace Awards since 2020. \nIn 2023\, Jose launched Hatching\, a company centered around helping people #LiveBetter and #WorkBetter. Hatching’s vision is to create a more peaceful world by helping people live with more compassion\, gratitude\, and self-worth.  The goal of Hatching is to help people and organizations leverage their unique experiences and potential to make the workplace an environment where people can thrive. SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 10/10/23 – Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters – UW Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds! \nNational Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians\, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday\, October 10th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time. \nThe topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters” \nWe know that the single best way to protect neonatal and juvenile animals from infectious disease is to care for them in an environment where exposure to disease is low (which does not describe a shelter environment!)  Despite efforts to find alternative housing options for these vulnerable animals\, underage puppies still end up in animal shelters.  Previous recommendations have been to wait until 4 weeks of age to begin vaccination\, potentially missing opportunities to provide protection as early as possible.  Please join us for national rounds Tuesday October 10th when Dr. Sandra Newbury (UW) and Dr. Kate Hurley (UC Davis) discuss a new recommendation for vaccination of neonatal and juvenile puppies in environments that present meaningful risk. \nWe hope to have an open discussion\, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded\, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not. \nIf you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list\,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nPlease use the following Zoom link to access National Rounds calls: https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC)\n+13052241968\,\,97442637396# US \nZoom Meeting Link:  https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396

SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 11/14/23 – Implementing More Positive\, Resource-based Field Services Operations – UW Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is excited to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds! \nNational Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians\, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The national rounds call will take place Tuesday\, November 14 from 2:30 to 3:30 Central Time. \nAs discussed during our rounds conversation in August\, if we really want to change the experiences of the animals and the people we serve\, we need to think outside our shelter walls or the foster homes that make up our rescues.  \nJoin us for a continuation of the discussion on the connection between equity\, well-being\, resources\, and capacity. \nWe are grateful to have two guests join us for rounds next week. Angela Rayburn is the Operations Manager overseeing Field Services at Chicago Animal Care and Control and AJ Caldwell is a National Shelter Support Specialist with Best Friends Animal Society and comes to that role with a background of being an officer in municipal animal control. They will share their perspectives on efforts to implement more positive\, resource-based field services operations.
