SUMMARY:Online Event - 5/21/24 - All Call: Advocating for Funding with the HASS Budget Calculator - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:On May 21\, Dr. Ellen Jefferson and Maggie Lynch will join the call to introduce the new HASS budget calculator\, which was created to address the persistent underfunding of animal services. This workshop will cover how to use the calculator tool and its results to advocate for budgets appropriate to meet the public’s expectations around humane care and shelter lifesaving. Bring your questions and data inputs\, and we’ll work through examples together! \nThe All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other. Popular topics include initiatives that create a more inclusive culture for both staff and community\, programs that keep pets with their people\, industry trends\, research studies\, as well as the hard stuff\, like what’s not working or what is particularly difficult during times of scarcity. The call is a mix of presentations\, storytelling\, open discussion\, and Q&A time. \nThe All Call is hosted by California for All co-leaders Allison Cardona and Nadia Oseguera and is enriched by rotating facilitators. You only need to register one time. Calls are sometimes recorded; recap emails with supplemental resources are sent post-call. \nAbout the Presenters \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, DVM\, is the President and CEO of Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) and leads APA!’s national outreach arm\, American Pets Alive!. In 2020\, at the start of the COVID pandemic\, Dr. Jefferson responded to the urgent need to keep pets out of shelters and with people by launching Human Animal Support Services (HASS)\, a collaborative movement to transform animal services to support the bond between pets and people. Dr. Jefferson has received multiple national awards for her work\, including the first-ever Rich Avanzino Leadership Award and the Maddie’s® Fund Inaugural Hero Award. She serves on the Mars Advisory Board for the Global Index to End Pet Homelessness and the Shelter Advisory Council for Pedigree Foundation. \nMaggie Lynch\, Senior Director of Research and Development\, oversees the strategy for meeting the research and data needs of Austin Pets Alive!\, including for the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project. Maggie has been a leader at APA! since 2015\, first as the head of the philanthropy team and moving to R&D leadership in 2022. She brings a background in academic research\, performance measurement\, program budgeting\, and executive management to her R&D role\, along with a talent for telling the story of the “why” of social change and for translating research and data into tools for bringing about substantial change in animal welfare. \nRegister here: https://tinyurl.com/all-call

DESCRIPTION:Join the next All Call for a conversation with Chief Veterinarian and Animal Care Officer Dr. Maria Pyrdek and Chief Program Officer Chris Ramon from Pasadena Humane\,and bring your questions! \nEffective shelter operations rely on a smooth integration between the impound process\, the care animals receive while in the shelter and the adoption/placement process. Successful integration of these areas of the shelter relies on functional working relationships among the leadership. Chris Ramon and Dr. Maria Pyrdek have worked together for over two years to integrate these areas and look forward to sharing the challenges\, successes and the on-going “experiments” to further streamline these areas resulting in happier\, more productive teams\, decreased length of stay and improved care for animals in the shelter. \nThe All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. SUMMARY:Online Event - 7/25/24 - Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection: Managing Separation Anxiety in Shelter Dogs - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 25 for Managing Separation Anxiety in Shelter Dogs with Dr. Valerie Tynes of the SPCA of Texas (12n Pacific / 3pm Eastern for one hour) \nSeparation-related problems result in extreme mental suffering in affected dogs and negatively impact the quality of life of their owners as well. With time\, these types of problems can severely damage and eventually destroy even the strongest of human animal bonds. Helping pet owners to understand that affected dogs are not “acting out” and that they don’t just need “more structure” or “more exercise” is imperative if we are going to solve these problems. This presentation will review the most common clinical signs of separation anxiety\, some of the “red flags” in a dog’s history that suggest it may have a separation-related problem and how to accurately identify the problem. Some practical approaches to treatment will also be presented. Can’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording within a day or two after each meeting. \nJoin us on the fourth Thursday of every month as we talk about dog and cat behavior – supporting pets in our community and animal shelters. Each month\, we hear from speakers about topics of interest to our group\, such as behavior medications\, modifying animal behavior\, assessing and improving animal welfare\, and how organizations successfully provide behavior support to dogs and cats. \nWho should join: Animal welfare staff and volunteers who are interested in dog and cat behavior\, and everyone who works to keep pets out of shelters and in homes. \nYou only need to register once for all meetings: https://maddies.fund/MonthlyBehaviorRegistration \nCan’t attend live? SUMMARY:Online Event - 9/17/24 - All Call - From Policy to Practice: Addressing Gaps in Emotional Support Animal Documentation for Vulnerable Communities - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:Submit your housing-related questions for the 9/16 All Call presenters! HEART LA’s Zaira Bernal (Paralegal) and Diana Cruz (Program Director/Law Clerk) will explore common challenges individuals with disabilities face when seeking the required documentation for Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)\, focusing on the limitations of current policy and real-world hurdles. \nAbout the presentation: The call will begin with a brief overview of the Fair Housing Act (FHA)\, highlighting its protections and requirements for individuals who rely on ESAs to mitigate their disabilities. The core of the presentation delves into three case studies illustrating common obstacles\, including medical professionals’ reluctance due to liability concerns\, and the systemic lack of healthcare resources available to low-income and marginalized communities. The discussion will emphasize the sources of resistance\, such as misinformation about ESA roles and barriers in healthcare access. \nThe presentation concludes by offering practical solutions HEART LA has implemented to address these challenges. These include facilitating self-certification for individuals receiving disability benefits in California\, partnering with organizations to connect clients with healthcare providers\, directly engaging with cautious medical professionals to educate and alleviate concerns\, and training caseworkers and other qualified third parties on how to issue ESA documentation. Through this comprehensive approach\, the organization aims to expand access to housing for those who need ESAs\, creating a path for legal protections to be applied effectively in practice. \nSave the date for Part 2 of our conversation with Zaira and Diana! Zaira and Diana will return to the All Call on October 1 for a conversation on addressing landlord resistance to ESA protections. What do you need to know to advance disability justice and help people and pets at risk of eviction stay together in your community? Submit your questions for the presenters. \nAbout the All Call: The All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday.
