DESCRIPTION:Lecture Overview\nFrom Happy and Fulfilled to Sad and Angry:  How Helping Animals Can Make Your Heart Hurt \nThe nature of animal work means that we are susceptible to compassion fatigue.  This includes the moral stress that is an unavoidable part of this work.  And trauma – both personal and occupational – can play a role in how we react to stressful situations.  It helps to understand what compassion fatigue is and how it can creep into our daily work. \nWe will talk about: \n\nthe individual and his/her ability to recognize compassion fatigue and learn to mitigate or heal from it\, and\nthe systemic\, organizational stressors that affect our work and how the two can feed off of one another – or work toward creating a healthier environment.\n\nEach attendee should come out of this presentation with a better understanding of his/herself and his/her role at the shelter and in the larger animal welfare community. Specific tools will be provided for creating a plan for working toward balance and emotional health in a very difficult field.  There will be a 15-minute Q&A discussion at the end. \nNOTE:  If you would like to assess your current level of compassion fatigue beforehand you can access the Professional Quality of Life Scale’s Compassion Fatigue Self Test at http://proqol.org/ProQol_Test.html.  On the right side click on “The ProQOL 5 Self-Score (English)” and it will be scored for you.  If you speak another language there are accommodations for you\, too. \nSpeaker Information\nAnne Lindsay is the founder of MAC\, which was founded in 2000.  She was president of a canine rescue organization and learned firsthand about frontline animal welfare issues.  After 12 years at a large shelter\, she gained valuable experience behind the scenes as a part of the shelter’s management team. \nIn 2010 Anne earned her Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University and has consulted with states\, smaller communities\, and individual shelters\, helping them to form coalitions and work on board development.  She has also focused on helping organizations and individuals to address the very real issue of “compassion fatigue.” \nAnne is a past president of the board of the New England Federation of Humane Societies and is a board member of the State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team (SMART).  She received various awards from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association\, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Animal Control Officers Association of Massachusetts. \nAnne and her very patient and tolerant veterinarian husband David share their lives with 2 dogs\, 3 cats and 6 hens. \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dmv5lydab&oeidk=a07ehgskstu88fb2ea0%20

What is not the same is how trainers work with different species because of the animals’ particular needs and safety considerations for the humans working with them. \nWe have assembled an expert group to talk about how they work with scared animals in a species with which they specialize. In this online seminar\, Debbie Jacobs will talk about dogs\, Michelle Martiya about horses\, Katenna Jones about cats\, and Emily Strong about birds. These ladies will discuss the behavioral profile of the fearful animals they often see\, that is the behaviors they exhibit and their typical history. The presenters will then talk about how they work through specific behavior challenges\, highlighting what may be different about working through the situation with a dog\, horse\, cat or bird in terms of management\, safety\, reinforcement delivery\, and other aspects of the training process. \nThe intent is to take a comparative approach. What is the same and what is different about working with traumatized animals of these different species\, as well as to highlight the particular considerations with each species. DESCRIPTION:What do (and don’t) we know about how genetics affects canine aggression? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica Hekman will take a deep dive into her own area of research – how genetics affects personality in dogs. How much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? In this webinar\, Jessica will particularly address examples from human literature about traits that are similar to reactivity and aggression in dogs\, why they are so hard to understand from a genetics viewpoint\, and what the future holds for us. \nAs always\, there will be something for everyone\, so come listen and ask questions\, whether you are just starting to wrap your head around genetics or whether you’re a confirmed science geek! \n  \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout The Presenter\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\n \n\nJessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs.
