SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Scentwork Solutions for Common Behavioral Problems - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Scentwork has taken off across the world as a fun activity to share with your dog\, and there are a whole range of methods and approaches. While some methods concentrate on competition\, there’s increasing interest in the use of scentwork and nose games within behavior modification programs. \nThis session will refresh your knowledge of basic scentwork approaches and their effects on the canine brain. Then\, using a mixture of case studies and video\, it will explore how scentwork can play a key role in behavior modification for a range of commonly presenting problems in dogs\, including fear\, frustration and more. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nHow “sniffing” affects the canine brain.\nWhat kind of scentwork might we use in a behavior modification program and why.\nHow we can integrate scentwork into behavior modification plans.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA 1 \nPresenter: \nDr. Morag K. Heirs PhD MSc MA(Hons)(SocSci) PGCAP CAB is a practicing clinical animal behaviorist and an enthusiastic academic with particular interests in research\, evidence-based practice\, scent work and deaf/blind dogs. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations: Part 1 - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In the field of animal welfare\, we have not always been the best at keeping track of data and metrics around the work we do; we are simply focused on getting the job done.  That is all changing\, and in order to justify our budgets\, apply for grants\, seek additional personnel\, etc. we are not being asked to provide data to support our requests.  This presentation will begin the conversation surrounding metrics we can and should be tracking in different areas of our operations\, how to ensure we are getting “clean” data\, and how to begin to apply it. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n\n  \nPresenters:\n> \n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/data-driven-decision-making-for-animal-welfare-organizations-part-1/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/21 - Update on the Canine Ehrlichiosis epidemic in Northern Australia - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Canine ehrlichiosis is a serious\, tick-transmitted disease of dogs. Until 2020 Australia was free of this disease due to stringent pre-import screening of dogs coming into Australia. Since its initial identification in northern WA\, locally acquired cases have been diagnosed throughout the NT\, northern WA and northern SA\, with cases also identified in dogs travelling from these regions to NSW\, Qld and Victoria. This presentation will provide some background to the disease and its vector tick\, an update on the number of cases reported\, the signs displayed by infected dogs\, and the strategies needed to manage canine ehrlichiosis. \nPresenters \nProfessor Peter Irwin\, BVetMed\, PhD\, FANZCVS\, MRCVS \nPeter graduated in veterinary science from the Royal Veterinary College\, London University in 1982 and has a PhD from James Cook University (1991) for studies into canine babesiosis in Australia.  He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Canine Medicine). Peter has worked in academia in Australia and overseas for more than 25 years as a teacher of companion animal medicine and as a researcher in the fields of veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. He is an internationally recognised expert in vector-borne diseases and is a director of the Vector- and Water Borne Pathogens Research Group(the Cryptick Laboratory) at Murdoch University.  His research concerns tick-borne infections of companion animals\, wildlife and humans in Australia.  Peter is currently appointed  Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University. \nDr Bonny Cumming – BVSc\, MVS \nBonny is a veterinarian and Program Manager -Strategic Delivery for Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities – a national not-for-profit organisation that coordinates veterinary and education programs in rural and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. \nBonny’s role with AMRRIC is diverse and includes establishing and managing strategic partnerships and projects\, monitoring and evaluation\, managing the development of the AMRRIC App\, and policy and protocol development. \nFor the last 13 months\, Ehrlichiosis has been a huge part of Bonny’s role. On behalf of AMRRIC and the remote Indigenous communities that they service\, Bonny has been raising awareness of the impacts of Ehrlichiosis to all levels of government\, as well as relevant community-based stakeholders. Bonny has been leading the AMRRIC team to develop a range of education resources about this new disease\, and is actively involved with ongoing government responses to this disease. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html
