DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, outbreaks of infectious diseases of public health significance have heightened public concern regarding the role of companion animals as sentinels and sources of human infection. The rise in importance of companion animals has also led to concerns about the impact of such outbreaks on the health of families\, including their pets. Using situational examples\, this talk will review what is known about the role of companion animals in emerging infectious diseases in California\, with a focus on H5N1 avian influenza.
