SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/1/22 - Anxiety: The Whole Story - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:So you have a shy dog – one who’s easily frightened of strange people or places\, or maybe even one who sits at home IMAGINING what horrible thing might happen next. Is this because of genetics? Or did you mess up somehow? Jessica will talk about the biology behind anxiety: the roles of genetics\, early environment (as early as in mom’s uterus!)\, and socialization. Spoiler alert: you didn’t mess up. But this talk will help you understand better where your dog is coming from and help you think through the many different puzzle pieces that made her who she is. \nPresenter: Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand. Please check your webinar library before purchasing. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Maddie's Insights: What laboratory studies may tell us about stress in a dog shelter - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. \nThis month\, Dr. Michael Hennessy\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\, will be joined by Regina Willen\, Founder and Director at HALO K9 Behavior. They will discuss how basic scientific research informs our understanding of the stress dogs undergo in a shelter environment. They will examine immediate effects of entry to a shelter as well as potential long-term consequences. How basic research findings suggest practicable means for reducing or preventing these outcomes will also be considered. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion and exchange ideas: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastStress \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FddH0bQWRpiH4HedjwY28A \nPresenters\nMichael Hennessy\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\nDr. Hennessy is a behavioral neuroscientist with interests in both basic laboratory research on stress and how this research can be applied to reduce the impact of stress on dogs in animal shelters. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Wright State University in Dayton\, Ohio. He earned his PhD in experimental psychology at Northern Illinois University and then completed post-doctoral training and served as Research Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Touchy Heely: Contact Heeling for Ringsport\, Behavior Work and Life! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Contact heeling” means teaching your dog to maintain physical contact with your body while also allowing them the freedom to look around. You might be moving\, standing still\, sitting in a chair\, or completing a task\, and your dog will press against you to maintain contact! While originally trained for the Sports of French and Mondio Ring\, this skill is useful in crowded environments\, during training classes\, or between working exercises…anywhere dogs frequently lose contact with their handler. In behavior work\, contact heeling can allow both you and your dog to observe the environment while simultaneously retaining physical awareness of each other. So many uses! \nUnlike precision heeling\, there is no expectation of eye contact or a precise position at the handler’s side. Indeed\, the dog can be taught to rotate all the way around the handler – the only criteria is continuous physical contact. As a result\, contact heeling can be relaxing and enjoyable for both parties. \nSound useful? It is! Join Denise Fenzi and learn how she teaches contact heeling\, along with a discussion of the varied ways she uses this skill in both training and in daily life. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/14/22 - Supported Self-Rehoming Without Surrendering: Setting Up Supportive Services with Safety and Success - HASS
DESCRIPTION:Approximately a quarter of animals enter animal shelters under the intake type called “owner surrender.” Pet parents often do not know how to safely and successfully rehome their pets themselves. Supported self-rehoming is a great way for organizations to give pet parents who can no longer keep their pets the tools they need to safely rehome their own pets with ongoing support from shelter staff and volunteers. Supported self-rehoming not only gives pet parents an opportunity to be a part of selecting a new family and the potential for continued communication after\, it also reduces the number of family pets who unnecessarily have to live in a kennel\, taking a valuable space away from another pet in need. \nJoin us for an info-packed webinar where our speakers\, Kaycey Adair from Greenville County Animal Services\, Ana De Luccia from Adopt-A-Pet and Lucy Fernandez from Austin Pets Alive!\, will highlight how organizations can begin offering supported self-rehoming options to pet parents who need it. They’ll also discuss ways to utilize social media and other technology solutions that fit your organization’s needs\, and best practices for communicating these programs to stakeholders and your community. Don’t miss it! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/1116613782408/WN_3cfnr2dER96WQR7nECZc7w

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/15/22 - Advanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the scanner - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal control officers are playing a much larger role today in the reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter\, but all too often officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID tags or microchip. This workshop highlights successful efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without obvious identification.   \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. \nPresenters:\n\n\n\nNick Walton is the National Shelter Support Manager for Best Friends Animal Society\, providing leadership and training for strategic shelter partners across the country. Through Best Friends’ national shelter support program\, Nick conducts professional shelter operations and field assessments\, and leads progressive\, humane trainings for animal control agencies and officers.  \nPrior to joining Best Friends and serving as the behavior and training coordinator for the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Atlanta\, Nick spent several years working as an animal control officer for Fulton County Animal Services through LifeLine Animal Project. Through this work\, he served as Fulton County’s primary field training officer\, providing professional training and development to new officers and cultivating a community-oriented approach to animal services in order to help Atlanta become a no-kill city. \n \nNick’s many years of experience as a dog trainer and behavior specialist combined with his commitment to keeping pets safe at home through proactive neighborhood engagement have resulted in a deep expertise in and love for community-based lifesaving. Once known around town as “the Dog Food Man\,” he has a reputation for building trust and key relationships with lasting positive effects for both pets and people.  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/advanced-return-to-owner-in-the-field-beyond-the-scanner/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/27/22 - Stop & Smell the PeeMail: Everyday Sniffing as Slow Thinking\, Social Problem-Solving & Healing from Trauma - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will offer a deep dive into the everyday practice of canine sniffing—not organized nose or scent work\, but the behavior dogs constantly engage in when left to their own devices out in the backyard or just walking down the block. Sniffing is critical to canine welfare because dogs navigate the world first and foremost through their noses. Smelling is dogs’ most ancient sense and they have evolved a remarkable olfactory anatomy to maximize this. We have all heard about the ability of dogs to sniff out explosives\, drugs\, human remains and even biological disease. But did you also know that sniffing functions as a central form of cognition for dogs not to mention an important mode of social problem-solving. It is even essential for dogs’ recovery from emotional trauma. I will guide viewers through the world of ordinary sniffing by looking at the most recent science as well as offering real-life case studies of sniffing’s transformative power. This will include a component on sniffing for horses because our equine partners love to sniff\, too! \nIf you can’t make it to the live session. No worries! \nAll webinar recordings are sent via email 48-72 hours after the live session. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIncreased understanding of dogs’ and horses’ normal sniffing behavior including its cognitive & emotional benefits.\nIncreased understanding of sniffing’s centrality to the welfare of all dogs\, not just those engaged in scent sports or who work in scent detection of any kind.\nIncreased understanding of how to enable sniffing and scenting opportunities for the average household dog as well as horses and make it an important part of their daily lives.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout the Presenter:  \nDr. Laura Donaldson is a Professor Emeritus from Cornell University located Ithaca\, New York\, United States. She is an award-winning writer on dog training and behavior who has worked as a canine behavior specialist for over 16 years. Laura is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)\, a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) and a Certified Control Unleashed Instructor (CCUI).
