SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/27/22 - Stop & Smell the PeeMail: Everyday Sniffing as Slow Thinking\, Social Problem-Solving & Healing from Trauma - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will offer a deep dive into the everyday practice of canine sniffing—not organized nose or scent work\, but the behavior dogs constantly engage in when left to their own devices out in the backyard or just walking down the block. Sniffing is critical to canine welfare because dogs navigate the world first and foremost through their noses. Smelling is dogs’ most ancient sense and they have evolved a remarkable olfactory anatomy to maximize this. We have all heard about the ability of dogs to sniff out explosives\, drugs\, human remains and even biological disease. But did you also know that sniffing functions as a central form of cognition for dogs not to mention an important mode of social problem-solving. It is even essential for dogs’ recovery from emotional trauma. I will guide viewers through the world of ordinary sniffing by looking at the most recent science as well as offering real-life case studies of sniffing’s transformative power. This will include a component on sniffing for horses because our equine partners love to sniff\, too! \nIf you can’t make it to the live session. No worries! \nAll webinar recordings are sent via email 48-72 hours after the live session. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIncreased understanding of dogs’ and horses’ normal sniffing behavior including its cognitive & emotional benefits.\nIncreased understanding of sniffing’s centrality to the welfare of all dogs\, not just those engaged in scent sports or who work in scent detection of any kind.\nIncreased understanding of how to enable sniffing and scenting opportunities for the average household dog as well as horses and make it an important part of their daily lives.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout the Presenter:  \nDr. Laura Donaldson is a Professor Emeritus from Cornell University located Ithaca\, New York\, United States. She is an award-winning writer on dog training and behavior who has worked as a canine behavior specialist for over 16 years. Laura is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)\, a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) and a Certified Control Unleashed Instructor (CCUI). She founded Four Paws\, Four Directions Dog Training & Behavior Consulting LLC as well as the very popular Slow Thinking is Lifesaving for Dogs® program. Dr. Donaldson also offers a Thinkific-based webinar on Trauma and Aggression in Dogs. She currently lives in upstate New York with her husband\, three dogs\, three cats\, an African Gray parrot named Obi and a small flock of Navajo Churro sheep. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/29/22 - Lost Cats and Found Hounds: Community-based Solutions to Boost Your Return-to-Owner Metrics - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:How many lost pets are coming into your local animal shelter in an average year? In Virginia\, public animal shelters receive thousands of lost pets each year\, with many of them never being reclaimed. In response\, Loudoun County Animal Services initiated a series of programs to help lost pets find their way back home\, simultaneously identifying and reaching out to the communities least likely to reclaim lost pets. This webinar will take you through the budget-friendly process they implemented to get lost pets back home\, and help you keep owned pets with their families\, saving room at the shelter for animals who need it most. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenter: Nina Stively is the Director of Loudoun County Animal Services in northern Virginia\, an independent government agency that includes the County animal shelter and a team of sworn humane law enforcement officers. Nina is a Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator\, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator\, and an Animal Control Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/6/22 - Maddie's Insights: Social Pain in Dogs - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. This month’s webinar is presented by Dr. Franklin McMillan\, DVM. \nThe experience of unpleasant emotions is often referred to as “emotional pain”\, such as when someone loses a loved one. The emotions that arise when one’s social bonds with another are impaired or lost – such as feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and rejection – comprise one type of emotional pain\, called “social pain”. Recent research has found that the term “pain” is not just a metaphor but is based on the finding that social pain is processed in the same brain regions where physical pain is processed. In addition\, similar drugs can alleviate both physical and social pain. For social species\, like elephants\, horses\, sheep\, rats\, guinea pigs\, dogs\, and humans\, social pain plays a powerful role in one’s well-being and quality of life. For today’s domestic dog\, the issue may be of greater importance than for any other species on Earth. Evidence indicates that through domestication the emotional bonding propensity of dogs toward humans has been greatly amplified\, which appears to have resulted in both greater joy for dogs when in the company of humans\, but also greater suffering when denied human companionship. Only by educating all those who care for dogs will “man’s best friend” receive the care they so strongly deserve. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPain \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister \nPresenter\nFranklin D. McMillan\, DVM\, served as the director of well-being studies at Best Friends Animal Society from 2007 to 2020. In that role\, his research involved the quality of life\, mental health\, and emotional well-being of animals who had endured hardship\, adversity\, and psychological trauma. He has published in scientific journals the first studies of dogs rescued from puppy mills\, hoarding situations\, and abusive environments. The work has included the psychological health of puppies born sold through pet stores or over the Internet. Before coming to Best Friends\, he was in private practice for 23 years as well as clinical professor of medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. McMillan is board- certified in the veterinary specialties of small animal internal medicine and animal welfare. He lectures worldwide and is the author of the textbook Mental Health and Well-Being in Animals (now in its 2nd edition) and a book for the general public titled Unlocking the Animal Mind. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/13/22 - Door Dashing: Get a Grip on Your Escape Artist - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Does your home have an open-door policy? As in\, “The door’s open\, WATCH THE DOG!” \nAn open door can mean a lot of exciting things to a dog: A chance to be the first to greet whoever’s out there; an opportunity for an unauthorized adventure through the neighbourhood; an invitation to chase after a squirrel\, the mail carrier\, a cyclist\, or a moving car (yikes!). \nThis webinar will lay out all the possible ways you can get a proper grip on door dashing\, from training useful behaviours to implementing easy management tips. Attendees will be able to apply some of these immediately after the webinar. \nAn open door will no longer be something to worry about! You can finally rest assured that your dog (and others) will be safe\, even if the door is accidentally left open. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/13/22 - "I really don't want to get bit today”: Strategies for fractious patients with Dr. Marie Hopfensperger - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Most patients who demonstrate aggression in the veterinary setting do so out of fear. However\, these fearful and fractious patients pose a real risk to veterinary team members. These cases can also be stressful and time-consuming. This talk will focus on practical strategies and sedation plans to enhance safety and reduce stress for all parties involved. \nMarie Hopfensperger\, DVM\, DACVB is one of four board-certified veterinary behaviorists in the state of Michigan. She is an assistant professor at Michigan State University\, where she runs the Behavioral Health & Wellness service. Her areas of clinical expertise include sedation of fearful and fractious companion animals\, behavioral pharmacology\, canine and feline aggression\, and feline inappropriate elimination. Her current research is related to shelter dogs\, specifically the assessment of their behavioral health and pharmacologic interventions to support their welfare while in the shelter\, as well as evaluation of their behavior in the adoptive home environment. Dr. Hopfensperger was the first veterinarian ever to be selected as Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellow. Her focus during this fellowship was on developing a trauma-informed One Welfare model of animal-assisted therapy\, such that programming is beneficial for both human and animal participants. She is a passionate advocate for veterinary student wellbeing and is humbled to have received two teaching awards in 2021. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/7236355939125286413

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/18/22 - Shelter PALS CA Shelter Laws: Community Cats - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:One of the most important work of shelters these days is serving local communities by engaging in life-saving\, humane—and legal—community cat programs (CCP) for outdoor-living cats. If you want to know about the issues\, and how to do CCPs right\, join us for a walk through the challenges\, particulars\, and legalities of community cats in California\, prepared by the San Francisco SPCA’s Shelter PALS (Shelter Policy and Legal Services) program. \nWhen it comes to community cats in California\, the sheltering industry is much stronger together. Standardizing CCP operations across the state will help people\, animals\, and local governments\, so that we can lift up communities who do not yet have them\, avoid problems in communities who already have CCPs\, and best position the movement to defend CCPs against any challenges. \nIn this 90-minute webinar\, attendees will learn the factual and legal basics of community cats\, how to support those programs with local ordinances\, and also how to sign up your shelter for free legal support to set up or shore up the CCP in your own community. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FybtwW4QRaimLr-QGdM5Pw
