The emotional-well being of these animals is important and there are ways we can improve the welfare of these animals by setting up low stress environments\, monitoring emotional states\, and practicing Low Stress Handling Techniques when handling and restraining. \nAbout the presenter\nA graduate of Mississippi State University but native of New Jersey\, Dr. Christine Calder has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in both New Jersey and Maine for many years. In addition to general practice\, Dr. Calder has worked at the San Francisco SPCA\, Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Most recently\, she was an assistant clinical professor in community veterinary services and veterinary behavior at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. \nAs a general practitioner\, Dr. Calder always had an interest in animal behavior especially clinical veterinary behavior and\, in 2016\, she finished a residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. In 2017\, she became a diplomate with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB). Her special interest is in shelter behavior\, feline behavior\, and shy/fearful dogs. DESCRIPTION:Municipal animal care and control organizations are often scrambling for resources\, and supplies.  Staff dreams of the possibility of creating a system to have the community support their shelter and community programs with funds and resources but have often been told “No” by individuals who think that municipal animal organizations cannot accept funds outside of their approved budget.  This course will cover the basics of how to get past the “No” and how to develop a comprehensive fundraising and outreach program that will engage the community and bring in much-needed support. Topics such as convincing your government officials\, setting up the appropriate infrastructure to succeed\, an overview of fundraising techniques that work\, and how to communicate with potential supporters will be discussed. \nPresenter \nJulie Bank is the principal of JBankConsulting where she works with non-profit and municipal clients on assessments\, planning\, programming\, operations\, and administration.  She is also faculty at the University of Florida Veterinary School working on the development and teaching of an online class on Development and Fundraising for master’s students.  She has worked for over 30 years in private non-profit and governmental animal welfare and control agencies leading organizations in New York\, Arizona\, Oklahoma\, and California.  Julie specializes in organizational change within animal welfare and programs that support the shelter in supporting the human-animal bond.  She has worked nationally and internationally teaching others about shelter operations and programs and has visited hundreds of shelters to assist with organizational needs. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/31/23 - Dr. Eduardo Fernandez: Training as Enrichment: A Critical Review - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Husbandry training and environmental enrichment are both important advancements associated with current behavioral welfare practices. Additionally\, the use of training procedures has been proposed as a form of enrichment\, with the implication that training can produce beneficial behavioral welfare results. Less clear are the specific testable ways in which training can be demonstrated to be enriching\, beyond simply providing opportunities to be enriched. \nThis presentation examines the concept of training as enrichment through three distinct ways training procedures could enrich: (1) training facilitates enrichment usage\, (2) training modifies interactions\, conspecific or otherwise\, and (3) training expands behavioral repertoires. Within each category\, I discuss past research that provides empirical support for training functioning as enrichment\, as well as related areas of research that provide additional evidence. Previous studies support the claim that training is enriching\, with additional research necessary to better understand how prevalent and under what conditions training procedures function as enrichment. Future training research should examine these potential enrichment effects\, including methodology that allows for comparisons to traditional enrichment\, the use of welfare diversity/variability indices\, and the effects of learning on trainers and trainees alike. \nAbout the Presenter \nEduardo J. Fernandez is a Senior Lecturer of Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Adelaide (Australia). He received his Ph.D. in Psychology (minors in Neuroscience and Animal Behavior) from Indiana University\, where he worked with the Indianapolis and Cincinnati Zoo. He received his M.S. in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas\, where he founded the Organization for Reinforcement Contingencies with Animals (ORCA). Most of his past and current work involves behavioral research applied to the welfare and training of zoo\, aquarium\, and companion animals. His past positions include a Visiting Professorship at Seattle Pacific University\, a Visiting Professorship in the School of Behavior Analysis at the Florida Institute of Technology\, an Affiliate Assistant Professorship in the Psychology Department at the University of Washington\, a Research Fellowship with Woodland Park Zoo\, and a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. While working with UW and the Woodland Park Zoo\, he started the Behavioral Enrichment Animal Research (BEAR) group\, which conducted welfare research with many of the species and exhibits located throughout the zoo. He currently runs the Operant Welfare Lab (OWL)\, which is dedicated to the use of learning principles to improve the lives of animals across many settings\, including exotic animals in zoos and companion animals in homes and shelters. OWL is also part of the broader Animal Behaviour\, Welfare\, and Anthrozoology Lab (ABWAL; abwal.com). DESCRIPTION:Introducing The Control Unleashed (CU) Program\, Deaf Dog Style: Deaf Dogs Unleashed! The CU program\, developed by Leslie McDevitt\, was designed to help dogs learn how to relax and focus in challenging environments\, while simultaneously building confidence by giving the learner control through predictable patterns in an otherwise unpredictable environment. \nAfter implementing the CU exercises creatively and effectively with a few different deaf dog clients\, it became clear that there was a need for these ideas to be shared. And so Control Unleashed for deaf dogs was born. Training with deaf dogs can sometimes be a challenge; the need for attention and engagement from our dogs is crucial when our dogs rely so heavily on visual cues. There’s also the added difficulty our deaf dogs experience with Sudden Environmental Contrast (SEC)\, as well as a more pronounced startle response when things appear unexpectedly. When things happen in their environment\, unpredictably\, and outside of their control\, it can create increased anxiety and make it difficult for our pups to relax. What better way to provide our deaf dogs with the support they need to navigate their world than The Control Unleashed program? \nThroughout this presentation you will get to experience The Control Unleashed program thoughtfully and creatively customized and purposefully geared towards our beloved deaf dogs. This will include introducing unique visual and tactile cues\, combined with predictable patterns to build a beautiful recipe for engagement and confidence. Angelina has previously worked as the finance manager/director for nonprofit organizations such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund. \nAngelina created her first Facebook page in 2012 to help a special-needs dog get adopted\, and left her career in finance to follow her heart through saving & improving the lives of animals through online marketing. Having a background in numbers has helped her develop innovative\, successful social media strategies specifically for animal care & control organizations with highly successful results increasing visibility & reach to improve online reputations through social networking platforms. \nIn 2016\, Angelina was awarded the first social media contract for Sonoma County Animal Care & Control increasing their Facebook page likes from 4K to 25K\, engagement rate from 500 to 150K (average)\, 2.2M during disaster-related events\, and contributed to increasing live animal release rate from 82% to 91%\, saving thousands of animals lives. From 2016 through 2020 Sonoma County went through 4 major disaster related events. After working through so many disasters and emergencies\, while being mentored by an experienced operations manager\, she also successfully researched\, designed\, and implemented a successful disaster preparedness plan for the online community and their companion animals. \nAngelina has also created educational webinars to help other animal shelters and animal response teams become more prepared for future events. SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/9/23 - Maddie's Insights: Short-Term Foster Programs for Shelter Cats: Beneficial or Problematic? - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Every year millions of cats enter animal shelters in the U.S. alone. Interventions are greatly needed that have the potential to reduce cat stress and increase cat welfare while in the shelter environment. Although dog foster programs have become commonplace for many animal shelters\, cat foster programs are relatively uncommon\, potentially due to the belief that cats may be at risk of unnecessary stress from the fostering experience. In the study\, researchers examined the social behavior and stress levels of cats that stayed in the shelter to cats that left the shelter for short-term foster\, either for 1-night or 1-week. The results of the study indicate that shelter cats placed in foster care were not at a disadvantage. These findings can benefit both cats and animal shelters alike. Attendees will learn more about the study and how to apply the findings of the research to help reduce stress and promote welfare for cats living in animal shelters. She holds a B.S. in Zoology and a B.A. in Social Geography from Kent State University. Her areas of specialization are animal behavior and human-animal interaction. Her research focuses specifically on domestic cat behavior\, cat social cognition\, and the cat-human relationship. She has worked professionally with cats for over 15 years. During her graduate career she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow\, a Visiting Research Fellow at Kyoto University in Japan\, and Maddie’s Postdoctoral Scholar. Her research on cat behavior and human-animal interaction has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Her innovative research has generated significant international attention from media outlets including Science\, National Geographic\, The New York Times\, and The Times of London. She has taught a variety of courses on animal behavior and welfare\, including courses focused on enrichment\, learning\, and behavior modification. She is also a cat trainer who has taught kitten training classes and offered socialization opportunities to cats of all ages.
