SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/15/22 - Advanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the scanner - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Animal control officers are playing a much larger role today in the reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter\, but all too often officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID tags or microchip. This workshop highlights successful efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without obvious identification.   \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. \nPresenters:\n\n\n\nNick Walton is the National Shelter Support Manager for Best Friends Animal Society\, providing leadership and training for strategic shelter partners across the country. Through Best Friends’ national shelter support program\, Nick conducts professional shelter operations and field assessments\, and leads progressive\, humane trainings for animal control agencies and officers.  \nPrior to joining Best Friends and serving as the behavior and training coordinator for the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Atlanta\, Nick spent several years working as an animal control officer for Fulton County Animal Services through LifeLine Animal Project. Through this work\, he served as Fulton County’s primary field training officer\, providing professional training and development to new officers and cultivating a community-oriented approach to animal services in order to help Atlanta become a no-kill city. \n \nNick’s many years of experience as a dog trainer and behavior specialist combined with his commitment to keeping pets safe at home through proactive neighborhood engagement have resulted in a deep expertise in and love for community-based lifesaving. Once known around town as “the Dog Food Man\,” he has a reputation for building trust and key relationships with lasting positive effects for both pets and people.  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/advanced-return-to-owner-in-the-field-beyond-the-scanner/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/27/22 - Stop & Smell the PeeMail: Everyday Sniffing as Slow Thinking\, Social Problem-Solving & Healing from Trauma - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will offer a deep dive into the everyday practice of canine sniffing—not organized nose or scent work\, but the behavior dogs constantly engage in when left to their own devices out in the backyard or just walking down the block. Sniffing is critical to canine welfare because dogs navigate the world first and foremost through their noses. Smelling is dogs’ most ancient sense and they have evolved a remarkable olfactory anatomy to maximize this. We have all heard about the ability of dogs to sniff out explosives\, drugs\, human remains and even biological disease. But did you also know that sniffing functions as a central form of cognition for dogs not to mention an important mode of social problem-solving. It is even essential for dogs’ recovery from emotional trauma. I will guide viewers through the world of ordinary sniffing by looking at the most recent science as well as offering real-life case studies of sniffing’s transformative power. This will include a component on sniffing for horses because our equine partners love to sniff\, too! \nIf you can’t make it to the live session. No worries! \nAll webinar recordings are sent via email 48-72 hours after the live session. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIncreased understanding of dogs’ and horses’ normal sniffing behavior including its cognitive & emotional benefits.\nIncreased understanding of sniffing’s centrality to the welfare of all dogs\, not just those engaged in scent sports or who work in scent detection of any kind.\nIncreased understanding of how to enable sniffing and scenting opportunities for the average household dog as well as horses and make it an important part of their daily lives.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout the Presenter:  \nDr. Laura Donaldson is a Professor Emeritus from Cornell University located Ithaca\, New York\, United States. She is an award-winning writer on dog training and behavior who has worked as a canine behavior specialist for over 16 years. Laura is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)\, a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) and a Certified Control Unleashed Instructor (CCUI). She founded Four Paws\, Four Directions Dog Training & Behavior Consulting LLC as well as the very popular Slow Thinking is Lifesaving for Dogs® program. Dr. Donaldson also offers a Thinkific-based webinar on Trauma and Aggression in Dogs. She currently lives in upstate New York with her husband\, three dogs\, three cats\, an African Gray parrot named Obi and a small flock of Navajo Churro sheep. SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/6/22 - Maddie's Insights: Social Pain in Dogs - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. This month’s webinar is presented by Dr. Franklin McMillan\, DVM. \nThe experience of unpleasant emotions is often referred to as “emotional pain”\, such as when someone loses a loved one. The emotions that arise when one’s social bonds with another are impaired or lost – such as feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and rejection – comprise one type of emotional pain\, called “social pain”. Recent research has found that the term “pain” is not just a metaphor but is based on the finding that social pain is processed in the same brain regions where physical pain is processed. In addition\, similar drugs can alleviate both physical and social pain. For social species\, like elephants\, horses\, sheep\, rats\, guinea pigs\, dogs\, and humans\, social pain plays a powerful role in one’s well-being and quality of life. For today’s domestic dog\, the issue may be of greater importance than for any other species on Earth. Evidence indicates that through domestication the emotional bonding propensity of dogs toward humans has been greatly amplified\, which appears to have resulted in both greater joy for dogs when in the company of humans\, but also greater suffering when denied human companionship. Only by educating all those who care for dogs will “man’s best friend” receive the care they so strongly deserve. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPain \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister \nPresenter\nFranklin D. McMillan\, DVM\, served as the director of well-being studies at Best Friends Animal Society from 2007 to 2020. In that role\, his research involved the quality of life\, mental health\, and emotional well-being of animals who had endured hardship\, adversity\, and psychological trauma. He has published in scientific journals the first studies of dogs rescued from puppy mills\, hoarding situations\, and abusive environments. The work has included the psychological health of puppies born sold through pet stores or over the Internet. Before coming to Best Friends\, he was in private practice for 23 years as well as clinical professor of medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. McMillan is board- certified in the veterinary specialties of small animal internal medicine and animal welfare. He lectures worldwide and is the author of the textbook Mental Health and Well-Being in Animals (now in its 2nd edition) and a book for the general public titled Unlocking the Animal Mind. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister
