SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/14/22 - For Dog's sake\, can you stop that? Canine-Friendly Body Language Improvements for Humans - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Dogs are resilient and oh-so-forgiving! These qualities make them endearing as companions\, along with their ability to love unconditionally. So\, why do some dogs struggle to understand us when we are offering affection or when we want to help them\, not harm them? In this session\, we will focus on the HUMAN handling that contributes to unwanted behavior\, even “aggression”. Get ready to rethink your approach as we reveal the common and widely accepted and taught handling errors that set dogs up for failure. Through extensive video examples\, we will demonstrate alternative handling techniques that help dogs to trust and thrive! \n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will demonstrate: \n– Examples of handling that causes negative behavior compared to handling that promotes  desired behavior \n– Demonstration of handling that induces trust and learning with dogs that are too afraid to respond initially to food rewards or affection \n– Comprehensive discussion around the correct use of pressure and release and why this is a critical skill for shelter canine handlers to master to save more dogs \nThis is a 2-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled at EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gx8OBPK3S4-pkOYgtxNSew

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/5/23 - The Fenzi Method: Cutting Corners to Loose Leash Walking (Part 1) - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Is your dog is a chronic leash puller? If leash walking is a misery then this webinar is for you! The Fenzi “cutting corners” method can work even for dogs where other approaches have failed. It requires no food\, no highly controlled environments\, and allows for reasonably inexperienced handlers. This method is equally suited to a young puppy on dog directed socialization outings as it is for strong adult dogs with years of practice pulling on walks. And the best part? It works fast and without compulsive techniques by reducing frustration in both the puller and the pullee! If you are tired of being dragged around or a trainer who simply wants more options for helping your clients\, then join Denise and hear what she has to say about an entirely new approach! \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/5/23 - Circle Method for Basic Reactivity and Over Arousal (Part 2) - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is intended to provide advice\, interventions\, and skills for individuals working with reactive or overexcited dogs. “The circle method of Loose Leash Walking” will be used to help the behavior and emotional state of reactive and over-aroused dogs by allowing them to adjust to their environment\, reconnect with their handlers\, and become more emotionally comfortable in the presence of specific triggers. The method can be used regardless of food interest and does not require elaborate set-ups. The information presented will build upon the circle method of loose leash walking\, and will assume knowledge of that material. This webinar assumes professional or amateur trainers who can assimilate the information with a preexisting working knowledge of dog behavior\, reactivity and over-aroused behavior. \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/8/23 - First Impressions 101 – How Ritualized Introductions Can Turn a Scaredy Cat into a Social Butterfly - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Interactive cats who approach unfamiliar people in a friendly manner or remain relaxed as they are approached\, are much preferred by caregivers. In a shelter setting\, the more quickly cats approach potential adopters\, the sooner they get adopted. In contrast\, shelter cats who are less comfortable in the proximity of strangers have a mean length of stay as much as three times longer than that of their interactive counterparts and are more likely to be euthanized. Despite the risks for relatively fearful cats\, behavioral interventions for them rarely extend beyond environmental management and patience. \nAt Friends For Life Animal Shelter\, Melissa and colleagues have developed a simple\, novel\, and effective ritualized introduction method that trains undersocialized cats to display genuinely friendly and affectionate behavior towards new people. This protocol has been successful as a component of a socialization program for fearful cats\, and demonstrates a wider application for helping the typical “house feral” learn to look forward to meeting visitors in their home. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe how adoption programs can benefit from a structured approach towards socializing fearful shelter cats.\nOutline a step-by-step process for conditioning undersocialized cats to approach and solicit affection from new people in shelter and at home.\nIdentify components of a pre- and post- adoption support plan to ensure that fearful cat placements stick.\n\nAbout Your Presenter \nMelissa Taylor is the behavior and training manager at Friends For Life Animal Shelter in Houston\, Texas. She has logged more than 20 years in shelter animal behavior\, starting with an internship at the ASPCA’s Animal Behavior Center in New York City. She developed a lasting love for cooperative care from training livestock and wildlife as the coordinator of the Behavior and Training Department at the Houston SPCA\, and applies the same principles to the dogs\, cats\, exotics\, and humans she works with now at Friends For Life. \nOver the course of her career\, Melissa has focused on the development of shelter humane education programs\, particularly those for volunteers\, with the intention of mentoring new companion animal trainers and behavior consultants with practices steeped in evidence and based on building trust\, security\, and partnership. Melissa has started several shelter behavior volunteer programs and consults with other humane organizations on starting such initiatives of their own. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5061308

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/10/23 - The Fear\, Anxiety & Stress Scale Deconstructed - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:Wondering if the dog or cat you’re seeing should be scored on the Fear\, Anxiety & Stress (FAS) scale as FAS 2 or 3? This webinar can help! Fear Free’s FAS scale is a ubiquitous tool that provides veterinary and pet professionals with a consistent\, objective way to evaluate pets’ stress levels at any time in any environment. \nIn this webinar\, Fear Free’s Education Manager Lori Chamberland will take a closer look at each level of the FAS scale to empower you to score pets with greater confidence. You’ll watch video examples of pets at each level of the scale and discuss why it’s important to address stress early\, rather than waiting until FAS 3 or higher to intervene. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://fearfreepets.com/resources/webinars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/18/23 - Breaking Down "Us vs. Them" Thinking to Build Stronger Connections - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Whether we realize it or not\, the polarization and uncertainty happening in society impacts every aspect of our lives\, including the workplace. When we feel that a core part of our values or our identity is threatened\, our instinct is often to contract\, to seek what feels comfortable\, predictable\, and safe. Yet it is precisely in these times when we need to expand\, to venture beyond the assumed safety of our comfort zones and echo chambers. We will explore 3 practices for expansion and how to broaden and diversify our social networks to make better decisions for our organizations. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/1-18-23

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/19/23 - Dr. Christine Calder: Low Stress Handling: What is New? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The shelter can be a scary place for dogs and cats but it doesn’t have to be. The emotional-well being of these animals is important and there are ways we can improve the welfare of these animals by setting up low stress environments\, monitoring emotional states\, and practicing Low Stress Handling Techniques when handling and restraining. \nAbout the presenter\nA graduate of Mississippi State University but native of New Jersey\, Dr. Christine Calder has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in both New Jersey and Maine for many years. In addition to general practice\, Dr. Calder has worked at the San Francisco SPCA\, Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Most recently\, she was an assistant clinical professor in community veterinary services and veterinary behavior at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. \nAs a general practitioner\, Dr. Calder always had an interest in animal behavior especially clinical veterinary behavior and\, in 2016\, she finished a residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. In 2017\, she became a diplomate with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB). Her special interest is in shelter behavior\, feline behavior\, and shy/fearful dogs. She shares her home with three Rhodesian ridgebacks\, a black Lab\, two French bulldogs\, and a snake. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5063846

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/19/23 - Bodies of Evidence: Issues Arising from Search and Seizure of Animal Bodies in Cruelty Investigations - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:A law enforcement officer seizes a dying horse without a warrant. An abused animal is brought to a veterinarian for euthanasia and cremation\, but instead is necropsied. A law enforcement officer shields onlooking children from a cat’s body by placing it in a nearby dumpster. A veterinarian does a warrantless blood draw to diagnose a malnourished dog\, and the blood results are used in a criminal prosecution. In animal cruelty cases\, the animal’s body—whether dead or alive—is a crime scene. Many law enforcement professionals have not been trained to properly preserve and search that crime scene\, and yet they are forced to do so\, without compromising the evidence\, the defendant’s constitutional rights\, or the animal’s health or life. These cases present novel search and seizure issues. Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s attorneys David Rosengard\, Emily Lewis\, and Kathleen Wood to discuss how these and other issues can be resolved for a successful prosecution\, and how they can be addressed or avoided in future cases. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/bodies-of-evidence-issues-arising-from-search-and-seizure-of-animal-bodies-in-cruelty-investigations/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/25/23 - DPFL’s Approach to On-Leash Reactivity - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Reactivity on the part of dogs living in shelters is a rampant issue that can contribute to behavioral deterioration\, increased length of stay\, and even loss of life. From a misdiagnosis of “aggression” to dogs whose reactive behavior escalates to problematic and potentially unsafe levels\, learning how to help dogs suffering from reactivity issues is a crucial need shared by our entire industry. \nWhile this webinar can be attended as a standalone course\, we highly recommend attending our Fancy Footwork webinar first. We will build on our Fancy Footwork approach to handling and training to offer practical training\, handling\, and safety solutions to on-leash reactivity for dogs living in shelters. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session of approximately 30 minutes (we’ll go longer if there are questions remaining). This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nThis webinar holds 500 attendees\, so register in advance\, and show up on time the day of the webinar (we’ll open it up 15 minutes early) to be sure to get a spot! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ap6COGGKRCqV7urAGbyFbg
