SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/9/23 - "Do dogs mean to be mean? Understanding Canine Aggression" with Dr. Debra Horwitz - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Do dogs mean to be mean? \nVeterinarians actually know a great deal about canine signaling and aggression yet most of it has become second nature to us. That is the reason that we rarely get bitten in day to day practice and when we do\, we realize it is coming just a second too late. However\, clients are not aware of subtle canine communication that can help them understand and improve their relationship and safety with their dog. Learning how to label these behaviors and use common sense explanations for why dogs do what they do will help you keep your clients and staff safe and dogs in their homes. \nDr. Debra Horwitz is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. She frequently lectures in North America and abroad on behavioral topics to veterinarians and pet owners and often featured on both television and radio. Her newest Blackwell’s Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Clinical Companion: Canine and Feline Behavior 2nd edition (2018) Other publications include the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine 1st and 2nd editions\, and co-authoring Lifelearn Behavior Client Handouts. She was an editor for books for pet owners authored by diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists Decoding your Dog (January 2014) and Decoding your Cat (June 2020). She was president of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists 2006-2008. Awards include Veterinarian the Year from Ceva Animal Health and NAVC Small Animal Speaker of the Year 2012\, and 2014. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8120737123734099982

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/15/23 - Building Psychological Safety for High Performing Teams - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:What is the secret ingredient for high performing teams? Research over the last few decades clearly indicates that teams with high levels of “psychological safety” consistently and dramatically outperform those that do not. Psychological safety refers to freedom from fear of being ridiculed or punished for speaking up about one’s ideas\, opinions\, questions or mistakes. When individuals feel fully included and are able to speak honestly and without fear of social risk\, teams are more innovative\, make fewer errors\, are more capable of complex problem solving\, and are willing to give discretionary effort for the good of the group. This session will explore the key elements of psychological safety in teams. You\, as a leader\, will be equipped with tips and techniques for fostering psychological safety in your organization. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/2-15-23

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/15/23 - Multi-Cat Households: Updates to Recognizing and Managing Intercat Conflict - HSVMA
DESCRIPTION:Although intercat conflict is common in companion cats\, it is often unrecognized because of the subtle signs that occur more frequently than hissing or fighting. Without addressing the intercat conflict\, feline welfare is impaired. Learn the most recent information to detect intercat conflict\, the interplay between mental and physical health and how to manage the distress in these patients. Although psychopharmacology is often recommended\, it is most important to address the physical and social environment and identify whether medical management is needed. \nDuring this presentation\, attendees will learn: \n\nto identify the subtle signs of intercat tensions and conflict\nto recognize impaired welfare within companion cats\nsteps for early introduction and management of intercat tensions\n\nAbout the Presenter \nIlona Rodan\, DVM\, ABVP Feline\, IAABC-CCBC \nDr. Ilona Rodan is an ABVP certified feline specialist since 1995. Her passion is cat behavior and how to interact with cats in veterinary practices to enhance their welfare and our safety. She is the owner of Cat Behavior Consultations\, and the former medical director and owner of the Cat Care Clinic in Madison\, Wisconsin. \n\nDr. Rodan is an active volunteer of the American Association of Feline Practitioners\, a past-president and former chair of the AAFP Cat Friendly Practice program. She is the co-chair of the 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Interactions Guidelines and has also co-chaired guidelines and welfare position statements\, including Feline Environmental Needs and the Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment. \nShe presents nationally and internationally on feline medicine and behavior\, and leads workshops on cat-friendly interactions and handling. In 2005\, she was awarded the AVMA Animal Welfare Award for her leadership and contributions to advancing feline medicine and behavior. Dr. Rodan has written journal articles and book chapters\, and is a co-editor and co-author of the veterinary textbook\, Feline Behavioral Health and Welfare. Her goal is for every veterinary professional to learn how to interact safely with and handle cats during veterinary visits. In her spare time\, she loves spending time outdoors in nature\, kayaking\, hiking\, snorkeling\, and spending time with her human and feline family. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://hsvma.memberclicks.net/webinar-multi-cat-households

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/16/23 - Radically Rethinking How We Handle Errors with Hélène Lawler - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We live in a culture of “No”. Indeed\, studies have found that (at least in the U.S.) we are told ‘no’ more than 18\,000 times by the time we’re 18 years old. That’s an average of 1000 times a year\, or up to 3 times a day. Ouch! \nNo wonder we get so wrapped up in how to handle our dogs when they’re wrong! \nIn the +R world\, we place considerable emphasis on reinforcing what’s right\, and telling our dogs what we want them TO DO. We want to keep things happy and positive for our dogs\, and we put a lot of energy into helping them be right. \nAnd so\, figuring out how to handle mistakes in training or performance can pose quite a quandary! If you’ve been in the dog sport world for any time\, here are a few responses you might be familiar with: \n“I use a low value reinforcer when she makes a mistake\, and high value or jackpot when she gets it right” \n“When she makes a mistake\, I stop\, ask for something simple\, and reward that so she doesn’t know there’s a problem” \n“If I don’t use a No Reward Marker (NRM)\, how do I let my dog know he was wrong?” \nWhich of these\, if any\, is the best approach? If none\, then what do I do instead? \nWhere does “errorless learning” fit into this picture? Is there any room in +R training for mistakes? And why do we get so caught up in our dogs’ mistakes anyway? \nIn this webinar\, we’ll unpack all of the above! Which will lead us squarely into what some might find to be a controversial conclusion\, but that I hope to convince you is the optimal path forward to effective learning and joyful training. \nI hope you’ll join me in radically rethinking how to handle errors! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/22/23 - Towards a More Humane Society: A One-Health Approach to Addressing Criminal Cruelty for Everyone Involved - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In responding to animal cruelty\, both legal professionals and mental health clinicians are often frustrated by challenges involved in identifying why the crime took place and how to reduce the likelihood of future cruelty by addressing those underlying factors – all while meeting the needs of animal victims. \nIn response\, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the University of Denver’s Institute for Human-Animal Connection have developed a certification program that—by surfacing the interests of animal victims—facilitates assessing causative factors on a case-by-case basis\, and translating those to targeted outcomes responsive to the needs of animal victims\, defendants\, and their communities. \nJoin two of the program architects—ALDF Managing Attorney David B. Rosengard and ALDF Criminal Justice Fellow Jessica Chapman—as they discuss conundrums implicated by overlapping legal and mental health approaches to addressing animal maltreatment\, and how grappling with those within a One Health framework illuminates a path towards a better understanding of risk\, a more complete remediation for those harmed\, and ultimately more resilient individuals and communities. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/23/23 - Accelerate your learning: Don’t fight extinction - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Animal trainers often talk about first teaching a behavior and then later adding a cue for that behavior. However\, while your animal is learning a behavior\, your animal is also learning environmental cues\, even if you are not aware of them. Behaviors and cues evolve together. When you return to working in this setting or with these props\, your animal will be ready to do this behavior again. So\, if you try to teach a new behavior under these same conditions\, the learning will be slow. This is because the cues for the original behavior will interfere with the acquisition of the new behavior. Instead\, you can speed up learning by changing the environmental cues. SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/1/23 - Changing Behavior by Arranging Antecedents with Kathy Sdao - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Animal trainers and behavior consultants sometimes overlook or undervalue Level 2 (Antecedent Arrangements) of the Humane Hierarchy. This six-level progression of behavior-change procedures\, arranged so that the least intrusive and most positive interventions come first\, was introduced by Dr. Susan Friedman in 2010. (See What’s Wrong With This Picture? Effectiveness is Not Enough) We may be tempted to skip ahead to familiar operant training procedures such as positive reinforcement (Level 3) & differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (Level 4). Antecedent arrangements (Level 2) suggest we first notice and adjust the learner’s environment in ways that facilitate the behaviors we wish to reinforce. It invites us to be creative in changing conditions that precede these behaviors\, with the goal of making learning more effective and efficient. Level 2 is much broader than simply “managing the environment” to prevent problem behaviors from occurring. We’ll look at specific examples of antecedent arrangements drawn from Kathy’s work with behavior-consultation clients. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 2\, KPA 2\, & IAABC Pending \nAbout the Presenter: \nKathy Sdao is an applied animal behaviorist. She’s been a full-time animal trainer for almost forty years\, first with marine mammals and then with dogs. At the University of Hawaii\, she received a master’s degree working with a research team that trained dolphins to understand sign-language. She then worked for the United States Navy training dolphins for open-ocean military tasks. Kathy also worked as a marine-mammal trainer at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma Washington. After leaving the zoo world\, she co-created Tacoma’s first dog-daycare. \nKathy launched Bright Spot Dog Training in 1998. Services include consulting with families about their challenging dogs and mentoring professional trainers who want to maximize the power of positive-reinforcement training. Kathy is proud to be an original faculty member for Karen Pryor’s ClickerExpos; she’s taught at more than forty of these popular conferences. Kathy has lectured at venues across the United States\, Canada and Europe\, and in Australia\, Israel\, Japan and Mexico. In 2012\, she published her first book\, Plenty in Life Is Free: Reflections on Dogs\, Training and Finding Grace. \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/9/23 - Maddie's Insights: Treatment Options for Canine Fears and Anxiety - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the second Thursday every month for a series on the latest research in animal well-being and how you can use the findings in your shelter and community.  This presentation will be given by one of the world’s most pre-eminent animal behaviorists\, Dr. Nicholas Dodman\, DVM\, DACVA\, DACVB and Ian Dinwoodie\, a data analyst and software engineer.  Both are from Tufts University and the Center for Canine Behavior Studies which Dr. Dodman co-founded. \nREGISTER HERE \nDate: Thursday\, March 9\, 2023 at 12noon Pacific / 2pm Central / 3pm Eastern \nThe presenters will discuss the results of their recent publication concerning optimal treatments for various canine behavior issues related to fear and anxiety. In a previous study\, they showed that 44% of all dogs have one or more of such issues\, so treatment of these problems\, ranging from separation anxiety\, to storm and noise phobia\, to generalized anxiety and PTSD\, should be of wide interest. They will detail the odds of improvement in individual problems of this nature that are treated by different types of professionals\, along with the programs and techniques they employ\, and the success of each. \nViewers will: \n\nLearn which behavior professional to consult for the best chance of success with each individual fear and anxiety behavior problem\nThe best behavior modification techniques to be employed for each problem\nOptimal supportive and managemental measures\nThe likely success or failure of different treatments for each problem\, including which medical interventions might help\, and whether nutraceuticals and dietary measures might help\n\nAfter the webcast\, join the discussion on Maddie’s® Pet Forum. \nThese one-hour webinars will be recorded and have been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nThis webcast has also been submitted (but not yet approved) for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastMarch9

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/9/23 - Law Enforcement and Animal Control Joint Responses - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:There is a lot of overlap between the roles of police officers and Sheriff’s deputies\, who are expected to be masters in all things related to public safety and law enforcement\, and animal control and humane officers\, who are expected to be masters in all things animal-related. That overlap is increasing as pets become our children. We share two common goals: safety for all—people and animals alike; and successful prosecution of those who endanger that safety. We need to reduce our insular thinking and include each other in our respective viewpoints\, priorities and methods. This webinar will help bridge the gap and start a conversation between these two branches of law enforcement so we can better support each other\, ensure more successful operations on both sides\, help prosecutors do their job\, and reduce everyone’s workload. \nThis session will cover: \n\nRoles of police/deputies in animal-related incidents\nRoles of animal control/humane officers in law enforcement\nSources of authority of police/deputies and of animal control/humane officers\, and how they differ\nRecognizing the gaps in training/expertise in both fields\nCommon goals and ways to achieve them\nBenefits of working together\n\nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. \nPresenter:\nHarold Holmes has been the Executive Assistant for The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control since 2016. Prior\, he was a Deputy Director for the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and before that retired as a Chief of Police in northern California. \nHarold is a former U.S. Marine who was recalled to active duty for the Gulf War. \nA hostage negotiator and police canine handler of an award-winning patrol dog at Redlands P.D.\, when he retired from police work\, he began a new career as an animal control officer. While at San Diego County Animal Services\, he developed the Responsible Pet Ownership Program for animal-law violators\, which won an award from the California State Association of Counties. He has experience drafting and shepherding legislation that became law at both the State and local level. \nManaging San Diego County’s Dangerous Dog Task Force for three years inspired him to attend law school. Harold graduated as the Valedictorian from Western Sierra Law School and was admitted to the Bar in June 2013. He is also a hearing officer\, a trained mediator and teaches a variety of legal and law-enforcement related topics. \nHe has completed management and executive level trainings\, including the County of Los Angeles/USC Executive Leadership Development Program. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/law-enforcement-and-animal-control-joint-responses/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/16/23 - Fight/Flight But What About The Forgotten Fawn? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:“Fawning” in dogs is a stress response often utilised when the threat is inescapable or unpredictable. Dogs in these situations will try to appease others to avoid conflict. This can involve tail tucking\, crouching\, and other appeasement behaviours\, which may be misinterpreted as calmness or obedience. While fawning is less well-known than fighting or fleeing\, it’s still a common response to stress in dogs and can have serious consequences for their mental and emotional health\, particularly. For those dogs that have been impacted by trauma. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll explore what fawning is\, why it happens\, and how it can impact our dogs’ lives. We’ll discuss how fawning can develop as a survival strategy in response to abusive or neglectful situations\, and why it can be difficult to recognize and address as dog owners. We’ll also explore how fawning can contribute to anxiety\, fear\, and behavioral issues in dogs\, and discuss strategies to build coping skills to aid rehabilitation. By the end of this webinar\, you’ll have a better understanding of the fight/flight/fawn response in dogs\, and be better equipped to identify and manage fawning behaviors. Whether you’re a dog owner\, a trainer\, or simply interested in learning more about the psychology of stress in dogs\, this webinar is for you. Join us to explore this important topic and learn how to help your dog build resilience in the face of life’s challenges. \nPresenter: Danielle Beck \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT \, KPA \, & IAABC Pending \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/16/23 - Pressure On Pressure Off: The Hidden World of Negative Reinforcement - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years I taught a senior level Learning & Behavior college course. The topic that consistently led to the most confusion was negative reinforcement (-R). While many learning theories and ideas seemed logical and sensible to most students\, negative reinforcement (as both a term and a concept) was often a sticking point. I see that same confusion for many animal trainers. That’s a shame\, because negative reinforcement is a very powerful and effective way to change behavior. Unfortunately\, it also has the possibility of being misused in damaging and unethical ways. \nI believe that negative reinforcement is one of the most misunderstood concepts in operant conditioning because the term itself seems like an oxymoron. We typically think of the definition of negative as something bad. In the world of learning theory\, negative actually means “to remove or take away something”. If you keep this in mind everything that follows begins to make more sense! We also need to consider the actual meaning of the term reinforcement when we discuss learning. Reinforcement is a consequence that is meant to increase a behavior. So negative reinforcement is something that is removed or taken away in order to increase behavior. Once the language and definitions are properly sorted out then we can move on to the good stuff; how to use it to change behavior. \nThis webinar will cover what negative reinforcement is and how it works\, the related concepts of pressure\, release\, & relief\, human & animal examples in the real world\, the possible fallout & ethical issues associated with -R\, and several basic training protocols. So get your training nerd hat on and come geek out with me about negative reinforcement! \nInstructor: Deb Jones\, PhD \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
