DESCRIPTION:Foster care is a unique form of human-animal interaction that is increasingly understood to be an effective tool for improving the welfare of shelter-living animals. Even brief stays in foster care can allow animals to escape the stressors of the shelter\, provide an environment that allows for greater social interaction\, and offer opportunities for improved health and behavior. \nIn this presentation\, we will highlight the key takeaways revealed in the 42 published articles evaluating companion animal foster care programs that are included in our recent review paper: Companion animal foster caregiving: A scoping review exploring animal and caregiver welfare\, barriers to caregiver recruitment and retention\, and best practices for foster care programs in animal shelters. During our discussion\, we will examine a variety of foster care programs that have been studied\, explore the evidence of their effects on human and animal welfare\, evaluate the successes and challenges in supporting shelter foster care programs\, illuminate discrepancies in equity and diversity of caregiver engagement that offer opportunities for recruitment\, and recommend best practices for lasting programmatic success. \nLearning Objectives:\n1. Describe scientific research about foster caregiving as an intervention for companion animals.\n2. Identify the proximate (i.e.\, physical and emotional) and distal (i.e.\, length of stay and adoption outcomes) welfare benefits of foster caregiving for shelter animals as well as their caregivers.\n3. SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/8/25 - Maddie's Insights: Exploring Factors That Influence Public Engagement of Adoptable Pets on Social Me - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:The use of social media platforms to advertise adoptable animals has increased throughout the years. The content of these posts (e.g.\, photos\, videos\, text) may increase post engagement (e.g.\, likes and shares) and ultimately animal adoptions. Few studies have examined which characteristics of post content successfully increases engagement. This talk will give background information regarding the online promotion of adoptable animals and will focus on the results of our recent study that analyzed the Facebook posts of several rural animal shelters to determine whether certain types of content (e.g.\, style/features of photos and videos\, subject/tone of text\, type/sex of animal\, etc.) influenced engagement. We also had the opportunity to compare differences between posts in 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020 (post-pandemic). The results of this study suggest that the type of animal and the environment in which the animals were depicted can influence likes and shares of posts. It was also discovered that posts in 2019 received more likes\, while posts in 2020 received more shares. Although the findings of this study support the use of social media to increase the engagement of posts depicting adoptable animals\, more research is needed to determine how the content of posts directly influence adoption rates. \nAttendees will learn about: \n\nthe online promotion of adoptable animals and the features that have previously been linked to increased adoptions.\nusing social media platforms to increase public engagement of adoptable animals. Specifically\, what features of post content may have an influence.\nquestions that have yet to be answered. Topics of future exploration will be suggested.\n\nEarn continuing education credit from The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement towards 1.0 CAWA CEs.
