DESCRIPTION:Amputations are major surgeries that are painful not only intraoperatively\, but can also be painful for a fairly long time post-operatively. The longer recovery time from pain is due to the large areas of soft tissue involvement at the surgery site and the severing of numerous\, some fairly large\, nerves. The latter initiates neuropathic pain\, which can be difficult to control. If the amputation is done because of a painful lesion\, the pre-existing pain will exacerbate the intra- and post-operative pain. Dr Grubb will discuss pre-\, intra-and post-operative analgesic strategies. \nAttendees will learn about the most immediate concerns that pet parents have when their dog or cat has had a limb amputation. However\, these unconscious connections and processes can have a lasting effect on how you do your job. \nJoin us as we discuss different types of bias and how they unconsciously invade your decisions and actions on and off the job. \n\nLearn to identify 5-8 different bias types\nUnderstand how bias and cynicism can play off of each other;\nThat bias\, while often thought of as a negative\, is actually an evolutionary necessity that we can earn to identify and work on\nAnd how to create a shared language around bias so your entire team can work on being more aware of these unconscious traps.\n\nAbout the Presenter \nOfficer Jace Huggins has been an enforcement officer and animal care professional for more than 15 years\, serving in a diverse set of roles with agencies throughout California.  As an Animal Care Manager for Placer SPCA\, he oversaw the husbandry and care of all animals in the shelter. He then became an animal control officer for the City of Sacramento and in time\, earned the title of Chief Animal Control Officer. He recently took on the role of Vice President and Chief of Humane Law Enforcement at San Diego Humane Society. His team services a population of just over 2\,500\,000. Jace directs\, coordinates\, and evaluates Humane law activities including the enforcement of laws related to animal protection and the sheltering of animals; develops and implements animal control programs and field enforcement policies; and assists with the coordination of division activities with the 13 cities that SDHS contracts with. One of his proudest accomplishments is the development of the Sacramento P.A.W.S. (Promoting Animal Welfare and Safety) program\, which includes volunteer field responders for low-risk/high-education need kitten calls\, a no barrier resource program for owners\, and a door-to-door resource program led by officer/volunteer teams. He works diligently on innovative programs that focus on keeping pets in their homes and providing owners with non-judgmental\, low/no barrier access to resources. Jace prioritizes inclusion in animal welfare\, serving on multiple DEI committees. DESCRIPTION:Canine CellMates is an innovative 501(c)(3) that strives to create meaningful\, positive connections between people facing felony charges and rescue dogs saved from local municipal shelters. \nBoth in and out of custody\, Canine CellMates facilitates programs in Fulton County (Atlanta)\, Georgia\, that utilize the healing power of shelter dogs to break the cycle of incarceration for individuals in our community\, providing a safe environment for meaningful self-reflection and personal growth. \nThe in-custody program serves pre-trial inmates in the Fulton County Jail. For ten weeks\, the program participants live and work alongside the dogs they train\, using positive reinforcement training methods only. During their time together\, the men and dogs form meaningful bonds and develop essential life skills. DESCRIPTION:Intermittent reinforcement is a common method used in positive dog training. For mot trainers\, continuous reinforcement is recommended until the learner successfully understand the behavior that is being cued\, then the trainer will often recommend switching from continuous to intermittent reinforcement. Many trainers use the example of intermittent reinforcement being like a slot machine sometimes you get a pay out and sometimes you don’t. The phycology behind the idea is to get the learner to continue to do the behavior even when a reward is not immediately present. \nIntermittent reinforcement can be a great method but we also need to look at the other side of intermittent reinforcement. In abuse situations\, intermittent reinforcement can also be associated with something called a “trauma bond”. This is where an abuser brings flowers one day and abuses the next. DESCRIPTION:We’ve all experienced that moment where we deliver a cue\, and our dog just doesn’t respond. It could be in a training session at home\, it could be when we are asking our dog to demonstrate their new trick to a friend\, it could be in a class setting\, or it could be in the middle of a competition run. \nIt is common to hear people say that if a dog doesn’t respond to a cue\, then they “didn’t understand”\, but sometimes we are sure that our dog does know what the cue means. At other times we hear people say that their dog is “blowing them off” (i.e. that their dog does know what the cue means\, but their dog is actively choosing to ignore the person / cue)\, but is this really a common reason for a dog to “ignore” a handler’s cue? \nIn this webinar we discuss the myriad of reasons why our dog may not respond to our first cue when cued to perform a behavior\, including; lack of understanding\, enjoying an alternative behavior\, lack of adequate motivation\, arousal in excess of optimal levels\, physical discomfort (present or anticipated)\, mental / emotional discomfort (present or anticipated)\, fatigue (physical / mental)\, and situations when the behavior is perceived as too “high effort”. \nObviously understanding why our dog is not rapidly and accurately responding to our first cue to perform a behavior is crucial to resolving the issue\, hence in this webinar we discuss all the potential reasons in detail. DESCRIPTION:How do we assess welfare and well-being in animals? What’s the difference between the two? This webinar will walk attendees through the current scientific thinking on the most effective ways to evaluate well-being\, or positive welfare\, in animals. We start with the Five Domains model and move onto another\, more updated model\, that has replaced the original Five Domains. These models are based directly on the latest research on well-being and will be applicable to anyone that works with animals. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Kristina Spaulding has been in the dog training and behavior profession for over 20 years. She has a PhD in biopsychology—the study of the biological basis of behavior—and is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist. She also has a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She is particularly interested in stress\, neurobiology\, cognition\, emotion\, and wellbeing and how to apply these concepts to the prevention and early intervention of behavior problems in dogs. DESCRIPTION:Overpopulation of dogs is an issue in Fiji\, similar to many other South Pacific and industralized nations worldwide. This presentation explores results from a door-to-door survey in the Tavakubu ward of Lautoka\, highlighting the impacts of human behavior in maintaining free-roaming dog populations\, including ownership apathy\, indiscriminate feeding\, and low compliance with responsible pet ownership practices. Our findings underscore the importance of understanding the negative impacts of “toxic charity” and emphasize the need to shift from predominantly shelter-based strategies and free-of-charge services to promoting responsible dog ownership and caregiver behaviors. Outputs of this study underscore the importance of ongoing evaluation of knowledge\, attitudes\, and practice (KAP) studies to understand how animal welfare initiatives can support community behavior changes that foster sustainable\, long-term dog population management strategies. \nThis event will be recorded and the recording will be available the day after the event. \nSpeakers: \nCasey Quimby – Co-Founder and Managing Trustee\, Animals Fiji \nCasey is an Animerican-Fijian with nearly 15 years of experience operating a shelter and multiple veterinary clinics throughout Fiji. Casey has been a pivotal figure in the region’s animal welfare efforts. She earned her Master’s Certificate in Shelter Medicine from the University of Florida in 2018 and has been at the forefront of data collection and population management in Fiji over the past four years. Her dedication to developing evidence-based\, research-informed strategies has significantly contributed to sustainable and humane solutions for companion animal population management in local communities. \nDr Jessica Hoopes – Animals Fiji Volunteer \nJessica is a Canadian Veterinarian with over 10 years’ experience working in veterinary and shelter medicine and animal management in Canada\, Fiji\, Papua New Guinea\, Costa Rica\, and Australia. Her experiences working in the Pacific Islands have underscored the importance of developing evidence-based\, research informed strategies for addressing free roaming cat and dog populations\, that are tailored to the needs of the local community. Given the challenges in our field\, what can we do to care for ourselves\, our peers\, and our staff? This webinar will provide an introduction to common occupational stressors in animal protection services and evidence-based strategies to support well-being in complex stress\, trauma-exposed work. \nParticipants will learn terminology\, symptoms\, and risk factors related to empathic strain aka compassion fatigue\, secondary traumatic stress\, PTSD\, burnout\, and moral distress.
