SUMMARY:Webinar Series - 12/5/20\, 12/12/20\, & 12/19/20 - Resource Guarding - PuppyWorks (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION: Webinar Program\n\n\nEach segment starts with a presentation of about 90 minutes\, followed by a 15 minute “coffee break” and ends with 45 minute Q/A session during which Sue & Trish will respond to questions posed by attendees of the live sessions. \n\n\nWhether you make the live sessions or not\, you will be able to access a complete recording of each session for 1 year. \n\n\n \nSession One (Saturday\, December 5\, 2020): Assess-A-Pet & Ethogram   \nASSESS-A-PET (AAP) Protocols to evaluate resource guarding (RG) & aggression thresholds. Practical\, detailed\, step-by-step procedures that evaluators can utilize in a home or at shelters and rescues to assess the tendency for RG\, the prospect of a high threshold for RG vs. a low threshold for RG\, quite possibly the degree of intensity\, and how we interpret what we are seeing. \nEthogram: An extensive catalog of seemingly endless\, often very subtle behaviors that tell us if a dog is feeling competitive\, or at risk of escalating into aggression. Focus on the AAP procedures and the subtle or not-so-subtle behaviors associated with competitiveness and/or a low threshold for RG. \n \nSession Two (Saturday\, December 12\, 2020): Low Threshold RG    \nSome of the science of RG and assessing it in shelter dogs. The low threshold resource guarder’s behavior in the home and community. Defining low aggression thresholds and what dogs usually guard: \n\n\nNot just the food bowl. \n\n\nManifestation in the home & neighborhood. \n\n\nImplications for other behavioral issues like separation anxiety. \n\n\nPica etc. \n\n\nRecognizing these small behaviors in real life: \n\n\nWill the dog guard an owner? \n\n\nIs the dog likely to bite a stranger or neighbor? \n\n\nWhat behaviors to look for when meeting a new client and their dog. \n\n\nHow RG can affect dog-dog interactions generally. \n\n\nSession Three (Saturday\, December 19\, 2020): RG Management & Behavior Modification \nResource Guarding is a natural behavior in all species. Management & modification protocols depend on- \nHelping clients identify problem areas including differing types of guarding & degree of risk associated with each\, such as: guarding\, food\, objects\, places\, people etc.\, and against whom the dog is guarding: other dogs\, children\, adults\, a single adult etc. \nIdentifying skill level & time availability of owners to ascertain what management or modification protocols are possible. Many people cannot maintain complex resource guarding protocols. Even when one person can\, others cannot. Safeguards are important for each family\, plus assessment of each dog’s degree of aggression potential and providing alternatives or resources for the family if the risk is deemed too high. \nProtocols: \n\n\nManagement: Identify & remove high value items – give potentially valuable objects & food in private area. \n\n\nGeneral guidelines: Teach dog that there are unlimited resources & that owner always has better resources ready to share; Teach “drop”. \n\n\nCognitive method : Teach dog to look up & away from item when asked or whenever owner passes by; Teach dog to leave item when asked. \n\n\nDog to Dog: Make sure management protocols are adhered to; Status adjustment as needed. \n\n\nOutcomes: Progress reports  ·Reality based decisions (some resource guarding is persistent\, no matter what we do) ·Rehoming if appropriate. \n\n\n  \n\nSpeakers\nSUE STERNBERG (www.suesternberg.com) \n\n\n\n\n\nSue founded the shelter featured in an  HBO documentary: Shelter Dogs (www.shelterdogs.org).  She has developed national programs\, such as Training Wheels® for community shelter outreach and dedicated herself to ensuring the quality of life of animals in their communities\, at animal shelters and in safe adoptions. Her 30 years of canine behavior experience\, includes as an animal control officer\, behavior consultant  at the ASPCA\, shelter owner\,  successful competitor in dog sports\, and a teacher of dog trainers world-wide. \n\n\nShe is the author of Great Dog Adoptions: A Guide for Shelters (Latham Foundation publication) and Successful Dog Adoption published by Wiley. Her most recent publications (all published by Dogwise) include Out and About With Your Dog\, Dog-Dog Interactions\,  Assessing Aggression Thresholds in Dogs and  Understanding Sociability (DVD). \nClick here for Sue’s website. \n \n\n\nTRISH KING (www.canine-behavior-associates.com) \n\n\n\n\n\nTrish has been a dog addict since she was a teen\, and managed to combine her love of dogs with her respect and affection for people. Her goal is always to enrich the lives of both\, through the humane and thoughtful use of relationship work\, environmental management and training. \nTrish established the Canine Behavior Academy at the Marin Humane Society for new or interested trainers\, which covers dog handling\, evaluating\, learning theory\, training techniques and solving problems\, as well as teaching people. \n\n\nAfter she left Marin Humane\, she taught the academy at Humane Society Silicon Valley\, and then locally in Marin.  It is now offered online.  Several hundred people have attended all levels of the Academy.  Trish also teaches workshops and seminars on behavior\, canine management\, temperament assessment\, and handling difficult dogs. \nTrish’s speaking engagements have included numerous conferences presented by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers\, the Humane Society of the United States\,  and the American Humane Association\, as well as California Animal Care Conferences\, private training groups\, webinars and teleconferences. \nShe has written a critically acclaimed book for dog owners\, Parenting Your Dog (TFH Publications)\, as well as numerous articles about dog and cat behavior for local and national newspapers and magazines. SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/8/20 - Ringworm Cats and Kittens: From Fungus to Forever Homes - Missouri Coalition of Animal Care Organizations
DESCRIPTION:The Missouri Coalition of Animal Care Organizations welcomes cat expert Stephanie Stryker to discuss deliberate and thoughtful housing ideas for ringworm cats inside the shelter so they are accessible and noticed by adopters. She’ll discuss how to market/counsel adopters on ringworm cats and what to do to set them up for success when they leave the shelter. Recommended treatments and our in-home care handouts will be included. \nStephanie has been working in animal welfare since 2011\, in both Arizona and Utah\, and she started as an “all around” cat staff in a nonprofit rescue shelter where they did daily care\, medical treatment\, adoptions\, and store transports. Then she worked at a sanctuary where she worked primarily with Feline Leukemia cats\, providing care and medical treatment. That was followed by 3 years working in and overseeing a community cat program alongside Pima Animal Care Center where she is now the Cat Programs Coordinator\, overseeing the adoption and behavior programs for the in-shelter cats. \nThe Missouri Coalition of Animal Care Organizations seeks to transform the collective impact of animal welfare organizations through a collaborative network that supports Missouri’s companion animals and their communities. We’re conducting regular calls to help connect animal advocates in our community and elevate our knowledge of progressive strategies to support pets and their families. You can join our movement by becoming a member of the Coalition today! www.missourianimals.org \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://fb.me/e/3bNQnTCec

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/8/20 - Looking Back to Look Forward: Why Fear and Bias Have Weakened the Animal Welfare Movement - The AAWA and PetfinderPro
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Petfinder Pro Adoption Options Series: \nThe animal welfare field is fueled by compassionate individuals who share a deep love of animals. At the same time\, that compassion has not always been extended to the other side of the leash. Fear and bias have created structural barriers to adoption\, unequal access to pet care resources\, and missed opportunities to accomplish our lifesaving goals. Together\, we will learn how to identify outdated practices and policies while addressing the underlying\, well-intentioned concerns that have kept them in place. \nAttendees will hear how peer organizations throughout the United States have embraced a fresh and more equitable approach to supporting the bond between pets and the diverse range of people who love them. The future of animal welfare is bright and we have an unprecedented opportunity to make positive change!  \nWEBSITE LINK: https://learning.theaawa.org/p/pf1

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/10/20 - Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:How many of you have heard the words “well\, we’ve always done it that way” as an excuse to not grow and change? As leaders\, it is our responsibility to grow teams with unique points of view to gain fresh ideas and perspectives and ensure growth\, change\, and continued success in our organizations.  Many leaders\, in our industry as well as others\, tend to be a bit controlling\, and since many of us have done just about every job in animal welfare\, we may think we know how to do it all.  We aren’t wrong about knowing how to do it\, but do we know how to do it best? This session is designed to discuss how leaders within animal welfare can approach recruitment\, retention\, and promotion to foster a diverse team of subject matter experts to help take their organization to the next level. \n  \nOther Webinars in this Series Include:\n\nDec 10: Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency\nApril 8: Staycations and Daycations – Building Short Term Foster Programs\nJuly 8: Building and Maintaining a Productive\, High Volume Fostering Program\nJuly 22: The Care\, Nurturing and Enrichment of Tame & Feral Volunteers\n\n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/recruiting-the-next-generation-to-your-agency/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/14/21 - Placing Behaviorally Challenged Dogs - The AAWA and NEFHS
DESCRIPTION:Should you or shouldn’t you? When it comes to placing behaviorally challenged dogs\, that is the question. \nThe unintended consequence of reduced shelter populations has been an increase in placements of challenging dogs. We see success stories on social media and television shows\, but is there more to the story? What is their quality of life – and that of their owners? Learn more about what effect these dogs are having on the families that love them and the communities they live in. \nThis panel will bring together research from Seana Dowling-Guyer about what happens to dogs after adoption\, with post-adoption case studies from professional dog trainer Melissa McCue-McGrath\, and shelter trends and perspectives from Mike Keiley from MSPCA. \nThis 90-minute panel and Q&A is part of a 3-part series from The New England Federation of Humane Societies (NEFHS) hosted by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. \nThis session has been pre-approved for 1.5 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits. \n\n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/11421-placing-behaviorally-challenged-dogs

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/18/21 - The New Normal: Spay/Neuter by Five Months of Age - National Kitten Coalition
DESCRIPTION:The National Kitten Coalition is excited to host Dr. Philip Bushby and Esther Mechler from the Feline Fix by Five program of Marian’s Dream to present on sterilizing kittens by five months of age. \nThere is confusion in the general public and private veterinary community about the optimum time to spay/neuter felines. For many\, the recommended time has been six months of age. By that time a cat may be pregnant and shelters are overflowing. For that reason\, Marian’s Dream embarked on a campaign to push the recommended age for felines back by four weeks. Dr. Bushby will present his findings on why the change is recommended\, specific concerns that people have raised\, and the research that supports the change. \nVeterinarians often wait until cats are 6 months old before spay/neuter. The AVMA\, AAHA\, AAFP and the ASV disagree with waiting that long. The new normal is prior to 5 months of age. Several factors have led to this change: \n1. Mammary neoplasia is the 3rd most common cancer in cats and 85 to 90% of feline mammary tumors are malignant. Spay before 5 months of age significantly reduces mammary neoplasia.\n2. Spay/Neuter prior to 5 months of age reduces unplanned and unwanted litters of kittens.\n3. Castration prior to 5 months of age significantly reduces sexual behaviors which often cause relinquishment of cats to animal shelters. \nIt is safe to spay/neuter cats that young. Surgeries are easier\, faster and safer. There are no adverse physiologic or orthopedic effects from spay/neuter prior to 5 months of age. Cats in shelters should be sterilized prior to adoption. Owned cats should be sterilized after the kitten vaccination series\, but before 5 months of age. \n*The recording for this webinar will be available on NKC’s Archived Webinar page (https://kittencoalition.org/resources/archived-webinars/) within a few weeks after the webinar ends. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/4058934446112442126

For fundraising\, and specifically animal welfare fundraising\, this year presented both a dose of reality and a strategic opportunity.  Many animal welfare organizations saw an increase in the demand for their services\, an increase in their level of recognition in the community and an increase in their fundraising.  For others\, the demand and recognition increased while the fundraising did not. \nEither way\, during this webinar we will share insight and thoughts on how 2021 may shape up and provide you tools and strategies to retain your 2020 donors while also projecting fundraising revenue in 2021.  Participants will leave the webinar with a formula to forecast revenue as well as applicable strategies to increase individual and corporate support in 2021. \nThis webinar is geared towards animal welfare professionals who seek to sustain or increase the current level of fundraising at their organization. \nThis live and recorded program is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit and pending approval for CFRE. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/12121-beyond-covid-planning-and-forecasting-your-2021-fundraising-revenue

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/21/21 - Preserving the Bond: the Veterinarian’s Role in Pre-Empting Animal Cruelty - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:When a low-income client presents a severely neglected animal to a veterinarian for treatment\, the doctor faces a difficult conundrum: is it their duty to protect the animal from continued neglect\, or is it their duty to help the person who may be struggling financially to care for their animal? In states where veterinary reporting of animal cruelty is mandatory\, the stress this ethical dilemma can put on a veterinarian is significant. Throughout this webinar\, the presenters will discuss the veterinarian’s role in both preserving the human-animal bond and addressing animal cruelty resulting from poverty. \n  \nWebinars in this Series with the ALDF include:\n\nThe Status of Animals in Criminal Animal Cruelty Cases\nOct 29: Understanding Wildlife Animal Cruelty \nJan 21\, 2021:  Preserving the Bond: the Veterinarian’s Role in Pre-Empting Animal Cruelty (this webinar)\nApril 1: When the Evidence Needs a Home: Pre-Conviction Forfeiture\nJuly 15: Prosecuting Farmed Animal Cruelty\n\n  \nOr click here to view and register for other upcoming NACA  webinars on the JCH Platform. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \nFounded in 1979\, the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm\, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes\, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals\, and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\nDr. Kris Otteman brings 34 years of veterinary and leadership experience to her current role as Senior Advisor to the Oregon Humane Society and Veterinary Leadership and Forensics Expert. She is also a courtesy faculty member for Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a board-certified specialist\, ABVP Shelter Medicine\, and a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator. \nAs a member of the senior leadership team at OHS for 14 years\, she lead the development of the Shelter Medical Services including the teaching program for Oregon State University\, College of Veterinary Medicine\, and for Veterinary Forensics Services. \nThe OHS Animal Medical Learning Center\, the nation’s first shelter teaching hospital\, cares for over 12\,000 shelter pets annually\, provides over 5\,000 low-income spay-neuter\, and wellness services\, and houses a comprehensive veterinary forensic team posed to provide onsite or field services. \nAs co-founder of Banfield\, The Pet Hospital\, her background also includes seven years in a mixed animal practice in southern Oregon. Her broad experience at Banfield included executive leadership and management as well as a strategic partnership with PetSmart Charities on national fundraising and adoption initiatives. She has served on the board for Cat Adoption Team\, as a trustee of Banfield Charitable Trust\, and has been a member of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Licensing Board. Dr. Otteman is a Charter Member of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association\, served on the National Shelter Medicine Organizing committee\, and most recently was awarded the OSU/CVM Alumni Fellow award for her work in the profession that has advanced and improved veterinary education and the partnerships between animal welfare and veterinary professionals. \n\n  \nLinda Fielder has over 20 years of experience as an animal welfare specialist\, 15 of which were spent at the Oregon Humane Society. As Director of Shelter Medicine and Humane Investigations there\, Linda oversaw every aspect of animal cruelty cases from the point they were first reported through the victim animals’ recovery and rehoming. A Certified Animal Welfare Administrator and a Certified Property and Evidence Specialist\, Linda’s expertise in veterinary medicine and humane care and treatment of animals combined with her understanding of evidence collection and handling\, resulted in successful large scale criminal seizures involving livestock\, dog breeders\, fighting animals and animal hoarding scenarios. She has extensive experience in developing and implementing procedures that preserve both the wellbeing of the animals and the integrity of the criminal case. \nIn addition to supervising a fully operational 12\,000 square foot veterinary teaching hospital and a law enforcement division with statewide jurisdiction\, Linda also conceptualized and oversaw OHS’ Emergency Animal Sheltering certification program\, one of the first in the country\, which enabled staff and volunteers to respond nationwide to natural disasters and large scale cruelty cases. She created the annual Victim to Verdict conference which was the first in the region to bring together multi-disciplinary players in animal cruelty cases for training. \nLinda has trained veterinarians\, prosecutors\, and law enforcement professionals from across the globe in crime scene processing\, large-scale seizures\, and link between animal cruelty and human violence. \n  \nSenior Staff Attorney Emily Lewis works directly with law enforcement agencies\, prosecutors and rescue groups providing direction and support for all aspects of criminal animal cruelty investigation and prosecution.  She supports front-line responders by training and consulting on search warrant drafting\, evidence collection and scene processing best practices. \nEmily joined the Animal Legal Defense Fund after serving as staff attorney for the Oregon Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement Division\, where she directly participated in hundreds of animal cruelty investigations\, including the raid of a massive animal-fighting compound\, cases involving large-scale neglect of livestock\, and all manner of  puppy mill and animal hoarder scenarios. It is this firsthand experience that has given her such a deep understanding of animal cruelty casework and prosecution. At the Capital\, Emily was integral in the passage of a number of important animal protection bills including stricter laws prohibiting animal fighting\, oversight of animal rescue entities\, the Humane Agent Bill\, increased cross reporting\, and strengthening of pre-trial remedies available to animal care agencies or individuals. Emily’s work on these bills  — along with her implementation of the first legal internship program at the humane society and her support and training of agency officers\, staff and veterinarians — contributed to the rise of the Oregon Humane Society as a national leader in the field of animal cruelty investigation and veterinary forensics\, in particular. She has presented nationally and internationally on the importance of the veterinarian’s role in recognizing\, reporting and responding to animal neglect and abuse. \nEmily holds a JD and Master of Studies in Environmental Law (MSEL) from Vermont Law School\, where she graduated with honors and was awarded the Academic Excellence Award  in both Torts and Environmental Ethics. She earned a B.A. in Environmental Ethics & Policy and was awarded the Arthur Schoenfeldt Environmental Ethics and Policy Award from the University of Portland. She is a two time winner of Spot Magazine’s “Top Dog: Attorney” award (2014 and 2016). \nEmily is passionate about her role as a voice for animals and aiding in the pursuit of justice on their behalf. \nBased in Portland\, Ore.\, Emily lives with her rescued Great Dane\, Whiskey. She enjoys running\, live music\, visiting the Pacific Ocean coastline\, and spends time on her weekends volunteering at the Family Dogs New Life Shelter. \n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/preserving-the-bond-and-preventing-cruelty-the-veterinarians-role/
