SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/14/21 - Psychopharmacology: Prescribing for Canine and Feline Patients - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Many indications for psychotropic medications exist\, including generalized anxiety\, separation anxiety\, panic disorders\, persistent phobias\, compulsive disorders and more. Daily drugs are given as such – every day\, regardless of events\, season\, or stress level. Patients on daily psychotropic medications may still be in need of additional help to alleviate panic\, fear and/or anxiety during predictable\, situational events\, as the daily medications may not be enough to control intense spike in stress levels. Other patients who display distress only as a result of known\, predictable triggers\, such as fireworks\, car travel or thunderstorms\, may benefit from an event medication alone. This lecture will give an overview of the main classes of drugs used for daily and as needed treatment of emotional disorders in dogs and cats – how they work\, what the therapeutic expectations are for each\, and what side effects may be expected. Drug interactions\, adverse effects\, and weaning protocols will also be discussed. \nDr. Meghan Herron is the Senior Director of Behavioral Medicine Research\, Education\, and Outreach at Gigi’s – A Shelter Organization dedicated to improving the lives of shelter dogs. Prior to her current position\, she spent over a decade as head of the Behavioral Medicine Service at The Ohio State University. She graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and became board-certified as diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists after completing a residency at the University of Pennsylvania. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/5985218351663722252

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/20/21 - How Cognitive Biases Interfere with How We Acquire Knowledge - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC 1\, KPA 1 \nGiven how behaviorists\, ethologists\, neuroscientists and veterinarians often get into conflict\, this talk discusses how our cognitive biases impact knowledge acquisition. Cognitive biases makes us reject information that we should accept\, and accept information that we should reject. In this talk\, the presenter will discuss a handful of them: \n\nThe curse of knowledge.\nAuthority bias.\nThe illusory truth effect.\nThe availability cascade.\nTribal epistemology.\nConfirmation bias.\nThe Semmelweiss effect. The backfire effect.\nReactance.\nThe Dunning-Kruger effect.\n\nThe aim of this session is to open attendees’ minds more to how biases come about and how problematic this is – and facilitate those difficult discussions with people who have other backgrounds. \nLevel of difficulty: Beginner – Intermediate (not difficult concepts but to many people a lot of new terms\, maybe) \nAbout Your Presenter \nProf. Karolina Westlund helps pet parents and animal professionals attain happier animals that thrive in the care of humans. She grew up pining for a kitten and pestered her parents until they finally gave in. The resulting black\, green-eyed\, half-Siamese cat she got for her seventh birthday became a true friend who lived to be 21 years old but was an easily startled cat who often went into hiding when there were visitors. She had grand ideas about becoming a field biologist\, but instead she majored in ethology and developed a passionate interest in animal welfare as seen through a multidisciplinary lens\, including behaviour analysis and affective neuroscience. She is now an associate professor of ethology at the University of Stockholm\, Sweden where she mainly teaches about how behavior management can be used to improve animal welfare. She also conducts live seminars\, free online webinars and masterclasses in addition to more extensive courses\, as well as the occasional scientific publication on the topic of enrichment\, animal training and well-being. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4300656

DESCRIPTION:In part due to the excellent veterinary care that we deliver to our patients\, we are presented with more geriatric cats and dogs now than we were 10 years ago. Most of us didn’t learn much about how to recognize and treat cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) in dogs and cats. In this session\, attendees will learn the most up to date prevention strategies and treatments of CDS in dogs and cats. \nIn this webinar\, Lisa Radosta\, DVM\, DACVB\, will cover: \n1. The most common clinical signs of CDS\n2. The most commonly used treatments\n3. How non-medical treatments can be effective in the management of CDS patients \nAbout the Presenter \nLisa Radosta\, DVM\, DACVB\, graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Coral Springs Animal Hospital\, she worked as a primary care veterinarian for two and a half years. She completed a three-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 and passed the board examination later that year. During her residency\, she received the Resident Research Award from the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB) two years in a row. \nDr. Radosta lectures nationally and internationally for veterinary professionals and pet owners and is the author of a number of textbook chapters and scientific research articles\, She also co-authored “From Fearful to Fear Free: A Positive Program to Free Your Dog from Anxiety\, Fears\, and Phobias” with Dr. Marty Becker\, Mikkel Becker\, and Wailani Sung. \nShe is the section editor for Advances in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and served on the 2015 AAHA Canine and Feline Behavior Management Guidelines Task Force. \nThis webinar is brought to you by our friends at Zoetis Petcare. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BsVQDlTjTLuw0PS0t20_nw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/21 - Solving Problems with Bears and Cougars - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Sightings of and conflicts with bears and cougars are becoming more and more common in urban and suburban areas across the U.S. Responding to the public’s concerns about these wild neighbors can be especially difficult\, given the greater potential for dangerous encounters between these predators and people. This webinar will provide an overview on the biology and ecology of these animals\, how to make yards and neighborhoods less attractive to them\, how to reduce conflicts with people and pets\, which situations necessitate a response\, and how to handle problems if they arise. \nPresenter: \nAs Director of Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, Lynsey White helps urban and suburban communities find effective and humane solutions to conflicts with species such as coyotes\, Canada geese\, white-tailed deer\, and beavers. She also runs the Wild Neighbors program\, which provides animal care and control professionals with resources\, trainings\, and consultation in the adoption of humane policies and practices for responding to calls about wildlife. Her background includes completing coyote research and data analysis for The Cook County Coyote project in Chicago\, Illinois\, and publishing an analysis of coyote attacks on people throughout the U.S. and Canada. Lynsey has a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology & Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and has led wildlife conflict resolution trainings for thousands of animal care and control professionals across the U.S. and beyond. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/solving-problems-with-bears-and-cougars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/21 - Sharon Carroll - Strategies for Training the Atypical Dog - Part 1: Concepts and Overview - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This is Part One of a two-part webinar on working with “atypical” dogs. Both webinars are stand-alone webinars covering a different aspect of this topic\, but they combine to cover the topic more broadly. \nWhen we train our dogs\, we are constantly asking them to solve puzzles. We are asking them to connect the dots between the cue (context cue or human initiated verbal / visual cue)\, their subsequent behavior (action)\, and the reinforcement. As our dog becomes more confident about the connection between these elements\, they can respond more rapidly and with improved accuracy. \nDuring the learning process there will be moments of frustration and confusion. Typical dogs deal with small amounts of frustration and confusion in a way that helps them find a solution to the puzzle. This leads to the dog attaining reinforcement\, which results in them putting in the same or greater effort on future learning-oriented tasks. \nAtypical dogs however do not respond in the same way. For a range of underlying reasons\, the training puzzle itself may cause an excessive spike in arousal in these dogs. This is commonly referred to as the dog “stressing down” or “stressing up” depending on the observable behaviors. “Stressing down” behaviors may include shutting-down\, stalling\, looking away\, appearing disinterested\, freezing\, moving slowly\, or performing avoidance\, escape\, appeasement\, or displacement behaviors. “Stressing up” behaviors may include barking at the human or at the task\, whining\, performing rapid sequences of random un-cued behaviors\, anticipating cues\, spinning\, doing zoomies\, lacking focus\, and attempting to guess at the solution with little thought. \nBeyond training pressures\, these dogs may also struggle more than usual with environmental pressures. All dogs need a certain amount of desensitization and distraction training in order to successfully function in bigger environments\, but the atypical dog may be extremely aware of stimuli in the environment. This requires additional training steps and more detailed monitoring. \nIn this “Part One” webinar we discuss: \n\nThe underlying factors that contribute to the development of an atypical dog\, including genetic traits and the impact of prior learning.\nWays to identify the difference between a simple training gap\, and a more complex problem.\nWhen to use classical conditioning versus operant conditioning.\nMethods for measuring the proportional impact the environment is having on our dog’s behavior.\n\nWe also look at a range of solutions that can create a more focused\, happier\, and more consistently successful training partner. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
