SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/21 - Solving Problems with Bears and Cougars - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Sightings of and conflicts with bears and cougars are becoming more and more common in urban and suburban areas across the U.S. Responding to the public’s concerns about these wild neighbors can be especially difficult\, given the greater potential for dangerous encounters between these predators and people. This webinar will provide an overview on the biology and ecology of these animals\, how to make yards and neighborhoods less attractive to them\, how to reduce conflicts with people and pets\, which situations necessitate a response\, and how to handle problems if they arise. \nPresenter: \nAs Director of Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, Lynsey White helps urban and suburban communities find effective and humane solutions to conflicts with species such as coyotes\, Canada geese\, white-tailed deer\, and beavers. She also runs the Wild Neighbors program\, which provides animal care and control professionals with resources\, trainings\, and consultation in the adoption of humane policies and practices for responding to calls about wildlife. Her background includes completing coyote research and data analysis for The Cook County Coyote project in Chicago\, Illinois\, and publishing an analysis of coyote attacks on people throughout the U.S. and Canada. Lynsey has a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology & Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and has led wildlife conflict resolution trainings for thousands of animal care and control professionals across the U.S. and beyond. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/solving-problems-with-bears-and-cougars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/21 - Personality in Dogs - Dr. Kristina Spaulding\, PhD\, CAAB - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Personality is all about individual differences in dogs and can help explain why some dogs react to life so differently than others. How is personality measured? What personality traits have been found in dogs? How consistent is personality over time? And how does all of this help you when working with dogs? We’ll explore all of these questions and more in this one-hour webinar. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine personality and explain why it’s important for training and behavior\nSummarize what is known about personality in dogs\nDescribe how consistent personality traits such as aggression are over time\nApply this information to training and behavior work\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4500318

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/28/21 - Sharon Carroll - Strategies for Training the Atypical Dog - Part 1: Concepts and Overview - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This is Part One of a two-part webinar on working with “atypical” dogs. Both webinars are stand-alone webinars covering a different aspect of this topic\, but they combine to cover the topic more broadly. \nWhen we train our dogs\, we are constantly asking them to solve puzzles. We are asking them to connect the dots between the cue (context cue or human initiated verbal / visual cue)\, their subsequent behavior (action)\, and the reinforcement. As our dog becomes more confident about the connection between these elements\, they can respond more rapidly and with improved accuracy. \nDuring the learning process there will be moments of frustration and confusion. Typical dogs deal with small amounts of frustration and confusion in a way that helps them find a solution to the puzzle. This leads to the dog attaining reinforcement\, which results in them putting in the same or greater effort on future learning-oriented tasks. \nAtypical dogs however do not respond in the same way. For a range of underlying reasons\, the training puzzle itself may cause an excessive spike in arousal in these dogs. This is commonly referred to as the dog “stressing down” or “stressing up” depending on the observable behaviors. “Stressing down” behaviors may include shutting-down\, stalling\, looking away\, appearing disinterested\, freezing\, moving slowly\, or performing avoidance\, escape\, appeasement\, or displacement behaviors. “Stressing up” behaviors may include barking at the human or at the task\, whining\, performing rapid sequences of random un-cued behaviors\, anticipating cues\, spinning\, doing zoomies\, lacking focus\, and attempting to guess at the solution with little thought. \nBeyond training pressures\, these dogs may also struggle more than usual with environmental pressures. All dogs need a certain amount of desensitization and distraction training in order to successfully function in bigger environments\, but the atypical dog may be extremely aware of stimuli in the environment. This requires additional training steps and more detailed monitoring. \nIn this “Part One” webinar we discuss: \n\nThe underlying factors that contribute to the development of an atypical dog\, including genetic traits and the impact of prior learning.\nWays to identify the difference between a simple training gap\, and a more complex problem.\nWhen to use classical conditioning versus operant conditioning.\nMethods for measuring the proportional impact the environment is having on our dog’s behavior.\n\nWe also look at a range of solutions that can create a more focused\, happier\, and more consistently successful training partner. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/3/21 - Shaping Up Shaping. Presented by Dr. Karolina Westlund - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, the presenter will go over some of the ways she sees good trainers tweak their shaping sessions using completely different strategies depending on context. She will discuss: \n• Why the 80% rule is problematic. \n• Bold shaping. \n• Cautious shaping – pingponging. \n• How the 10 Laws of Shaping evolved into the Modern Principles of Shaping. \n• Some common shaping mistakes – and how to address them. \nShaping is the sharpest tool in the animal trainer’s box…theoretically. Practically\, it can be hard to execute\, and many trainers get stuck. Hopefully\, this lecture will provide you with some ideas of how to get unstuck. \nLevel of difficulty: Intermediate \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4300677

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/4/21 - The Hidden Life of Behavior Chains: Breaking\, Repairing\, and Maintaining Behavior Sequences - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Behavior chains are wonderfully simple–just use cues to reinforce cued behaviors–yet it’s so easy to get drawn into complexities. Especially when things start to go wrong\, we can get caught up in superstitions or wishful thinking (“If we just keep doing it\, he’ll start to get it right! Any moment now!”). \nLet’s talk about the care and feeding of behavior chains\, how to maintain them reliably and how to repair them efficiently when something goes wrong. We’ll even discuss when we might want to break them\, and of course how to build strong chains when we want to keep them. \nBy the end of this session\, you will know how to identify the broken link in a chain (which may not be the one which looks broken)\, how to keep chains reliable\, and how to test your chain before you assemble it. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/10/21 - Webinar: Medical Mimics in Dogs: When Behavioral Symptoms are the Tip of the Iceberg - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Behavioral symptoms are often the first signs of illness owners notice. When those symptoms look like biting\, panic disorders\, compulsive behaviors\, and many others it can be tempting to call in the veterinary psychiatry team. However\, many underlying medical conditions can cause similar changes in behavior. Come to this lecture to learn how to identify when a patient’s behavioral symptoms require further medical diagnostics. \nDr. E’Lise Christensen DVM is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and an international lecturer and author. Dr. C received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2002. She first became interested in veterinary behavior as a high school student when she worked at a veterinary practice and began training animals for pet therapy at a local substance abuse facility. While in veterinary school she researched separation anxiety in shelter dogs\, was an assistant trainer at an animal shelter\, and studied with numerous board-certified veterinary behaviorists. \nAfter veterinary school Dr. C began a rotating small animal internship at SouthPaws Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield\, Virginia. While working there she continued her studies in veterinary behavior. She practiced feline-only medicine in Arlington\, Virginia and general medicine in Bloomingdale\, New Jersey before entering the Behavior Residency Program at Cornell University in 2004. During her residency she researched the behavior of dogs\, cats\, and horses and treated behavioral problems in a number of different species. Her most cited research involved evaluating the efficacy of canine temperament tests in the shelter system. \nDr. C is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and a member of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) Speaker’s Bureau and the American Veterinary Medical Association. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1359880797510638091
