SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/10/21 - Webinar: Medical Mimics in Dogs: When Behavioral Symptoms are the Tip of the Iceberg - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Behavioral symptoms are often the first signs of illness owners notice. When those symptoms look like biting\, panic disorders\, compulsive behaviors\, and many others it can be tempting to call in the veterinary psychiatry team. However\, many underlying medical conditions can cause similar changes in behavior. Come to this lecture to learn how to identify when a patient’s behavioral symptoms require further medical diagnostics. \nDr. E’Lise Christensen DVM is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and an international lecturer and author. Dr. C received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2002. She first became interested in veterinary behavior as a high school student when she worked at a veterinary practice and began training animals for pet therapy at a local substance abuse facility. While in veterinary school she researched separation anxiety in shelter dogs\, was an assistant trainer at an animal shelter\, and studied with numerous board-certified veterinary behaviorists. \nAfter veterinary school Dr. C began a rotating small animal internship at SouthPaws Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield\, Virginia. While working there she continued her studies in veterinary behavior. She practiced feline-only medicine in Arlington\, Virginia and general medicine in Bloomingdale\, New Jersey before entering the Behavior Residency Program at Cornell University in 2004. During her residency she researched the behavior of dogs\, cats\, and horses and treated behavioral problems in a number of different species. Her most cited research involved evaluating the efficacy of canine temperament tests in the shelter system. \nDr. C is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and a member of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) Speaker’s Bureau and the American Veterinary Medical Association. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1359880797510638091

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/18/21 - Positive Reinforcement Training without the Use of Food - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Many different methods exist for training animals of all species: most rely on some variety of reinforcement or punishment. Food is generally considered to be a primary reinforcer\, which means that it is something that the majority of animals find inherently rewarding\, even without prior training or experience. With that said\, there are several good reasons why using food in training may not always be a great idea. This presentation will cover these reasons\, as well as extensive information about how to use positive reinforcement based training methods without the use of food. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/positive-reinforcement-training-without-the-use-of-food.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/18/21 - Lifesaving Dispatch - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Traditional dispatch programs focus on collecting information and sending out an officer. Today’s modern dispatch program focuses on lifesaving and proactive problem-solving and acts as the agency’s gatekeeper for officer call volume and shelter intake. This approach accesses the potential for increased lifesaving and community engagement that the traditional mindset leaves behind. The training will cover customer service\, radio use\, and priorities\, information collection and problem-solving over the phone\, as well as tips and tricks on handling some of the commonly received complaint calls. This training will challenge the traditional model of animal control dispatch and encourage a more proactive\, engaged\, and community-focused approach to the call-takers of the field service industry. \nSpeaker: \nAnna Walton is the municipal and shelter support coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society\, providing logistics support for strategic shelter partnerships and programs across the country. Through Best Friends’ digital learning efforts\, Anna creates educational content for a full range of interactive online trainings and tools to support field services professionals. \nBefore stepping into her current role on the shelter support team\, Anna worked as the community cat program coordinator for the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Atlanta\, Georgia. As part of that work\, she mentored municipal shelters and rescue partners in the Southeast\, worked with commissioners and government leadership to establish best practices for local animal control agencies\, and led grassroots efforts to update county ordinances to ensure the continuation of trap-neuter-return programs for Cobb County’s community cats. \nPrior to joining Best Friends\, Anna served as an animal control officer and dispatcher for Fulton County Animal Services through LifeLine Animal Project in Atlanta. While she was an ACO\, Anna managed Fulton County’s Doghouse Program\, providing humane support for pets and proactive assistance to community members in underserved areas. Before diving into the animal protection and sheltering world\, Anna worked as a wildlife care supervisor for Aware Wildlife Center\, where she oversaw the rehabilitation of wild animals\, trained and managed volunteers in animal care\, and developed fundraising and community engagement programs. \nWhile completing her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Emory University\, Anna traveled to northern Tanzania through the School for International Training to study human-wildlife conflict\, animal behavior and the wildlife conservation movement. She also managed to pick up a bit of Swahili. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/lifesaving-dispatch/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/7/21 - Community Cats: How to Garner Support For and Run a Successful TNR Program - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will talk about the history of the Community Cat Program at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) in Arlington\, Virginia including where we were\, where we are now\, and how we got there. We will discuss how to garner successful support and buy-in for a jurisdiction-wide program\, how to resolve the most common community cat conflicts\, and what supportive needs arise during a TNR program. Since The Community Cat Program’s inception in 2011\, Arlington notes a 70% decrease in feral colony size and an 82% decrease in cat euthanasia\, as fewer strays mean fewer cats are brought to the shelter. Our program has achieved what everyone ultimately wants to see- a humane solution to the issue of outdoor cats. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/community-cats-how-to-garner-support-for-and-run-a-successful-tnr-program/\n
