SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/26/24 - Advancements in Neonatal Kitten Care - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Neonatal kitten care has seen significant advancements over the last decade. At the same time\, social media had created thousands of influencers sharing information on the best ways to save these little ones. This information is often conflicting. In 2023\, several major shelter medicine programs and animal advocacy groups updated their guidelines for caring for neonatal kittens which added even more confusion and debate about the best ways to care underage kittens. \nJoin Dr. Julie Levy and Marnie Russ for a review of these changes and clarification about feeding schedules\, weaning age\, temperature regulation\, euthanasia rates\, medical interventions\, combining litters\, socialization\, and adoption. Come away knowing how you and your shelter can provide neonatal kittens with the best possible care. \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been submitted for approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval. \nGuest Speakers: \nDr. @Julie Levy\, Fran Marino Distinguished Professor of Shelter Medicine Education at the\nUniversity of Florida \n@Marnie Russ\, National Kitten College Program Administrator\, National Kitten College/Animal Welfare League of Arlington \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://maddies.fund/WebcastRegistrationNeonatalKittens

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/26/24 - Caring for the People that Care for Animals: Prioritizing Staff Well-being in Animal Welfare - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:Mental health is a challenge for shelter and rescue staff\, many struggling with burnout and compassion fatigue\, and the data proves it. Roughly 90% of shelter staff reported high levels of compassion fatigue according to a 2023 Best Friends study titled “Quality of Life Assessment: A study of U.S. animal shelter staff well-being.” \nAs the demands of animal welfare continue to intensify\, it becomes crucial to recognize and address the toll it can take on the people working tirelessly behind the scenes. Often\, organizations make it the individual’s responsibility to solve this challenge by providing self-care tips or meditation apps. While these are helpful tools\, the vital topic of how to find staff well-being solutions organization-wide is often overlooked. We’re addressing exactly that in this live webinar featuring \n\nMichael Keiley\, CAWA\, Vice President of the Animal Protection Division for MSPCA-Angell in Massachusetts\nAlisha Vianello\, Executive Director of Gateway Pet Guardians in Illinois\nAmanda Loellke\, Adoption and Foster Manager\, Gateway Pet Guardians\, East St. Louis\, IL\nLeah Craig Chumbley (Fieser)\, Executive Director of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in North Carolina\n\nThis panel will be moderated by licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Amanda Weiss\, PsyD\, who consulted with Best Friends staff on the 2023 study. \nThese experts will share their experiences recognizing the need for change in their organizations to prioritize staff well-being and delve deep into the challenges along with practical solutions to achieve it. Register now and join live on June 26 at 5pm ET. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://bestfriends-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/7117134723360/WN_W91ZBvhUTGqEcUIa9XNgIA#/registration

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/26/24 - Circle of Care: Amputation Pain Solutions & Home Recovery Insights for Amputee Pets & Their People - HSVMA
DESCRIPTION:Amputations are major surgeries that are painful not only intraoperatively\, but can also be painful for a fairly long time post-operatively. The longer recovery time from pain is due to the large areas of soft tissue involvement at the surgery site and the severing of numerous\, some fairly large\, nerves. The latter initiates neuropathic pain\, which can be difficult to control. If the amputation is done because of a painful lesion\, the pre-existing pain will exacerbate the intra- and post-operative pain. Dr Grubb will discuss pre-\, intra-and post-operative analgesic strategies. \nAttendees will learn about the most immediate concerns that pet parents have when their dog or cat has had a limb amputation. The goal is to encourage discussion before and after surgery\, in order to facilitate a smoother recovery with less emotional burden on the pet parent as well as the veterinary team. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nReview the normal pain pathway\nDiscuss the changes in the pain pathway with pre-existing pain\nDefine neuropathic pain and the role in post-amputation pain\nExplore pre-\, intra-and post-operative analgesic strategies\nDevelop tools to address the important discussion points for the pet parent such as potential mobility challenges and realistic expectations during and after recover\n\nThis webinar is FREE for all attendees.\n1.5 hours of RACE CE credits (medical) will be available for HSVMA members only (pending approval).\nNot yet a member? SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/27/24 - Recognizing and Understanding Bias for the Animal Welfare Professional - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Our brains are amazing at making connections\, doing work\, and making decisions without us ever realizing it. Like when you drive home and realize as you’re parking that you don’t really remember the drive – yup – your unconscious brain played navigator so you could zone out a bit. However\, these unconscious connections and processes can have a lasting effect on how you do your job. \nJoin us as we discuss different types of bias and how they unconsciously invade your decisions and actions on and off the job. \n\nLearn to identify 5-8 different bias types\nUnderstand how bias and cynicism can play off of each other;\nThat bias\, while often thought of as a negative\, is actually an evolutionary necessity that we can earn to identify and work on\nAnd how to create a shared language around bias so your entire team can work on being more aware of these unconscious traps.\n\nAbout the Presenter \nOfficer Jace Huggins has been an enforcement officer and animal care professional for more than 15 years\, serving in a diverse set of roles with agencies throughout California.  As an Animal Care Manager for Placer SPCA\, he oversaw the husbandry and care of all animals in the shelter. He then became an animal control officer for the City of Sacramento and in time\, earned the title of Chief Animal Control Officer. He recently took on the role of Vice President and Chief of Humane Law Enforcement at San Diego Humane Society. His team services a population of just over 2\,500\,000. Jace directs\, coordinates\, and evaluates Humane law activities including the enforcement of laws related to animal protection and the sheltering of animals; develops and implements animal control programs and field enforcement policies; and assists with the coordination of division activities with the 13 cities that SDHS contracts with. One of his proudest accomplishments is the development of the Sacramento P.A.W.S. (Promoting Animal Welfare and Safety) program\, which includes volunteer field responders for low-risk/high-education need kitten calls\, a no barrier resource program for owners\, and a door-to-door resource program led by officer/volunteer teams. He works diligently on innovative programs that focus on keeping pets in their homes and providing owners with non-judgmental\, low/no barrier access to resources. Jace prioritizes inclusion in animal welfare\, serving on multiple DEI committees. He was a trainer for the City Of Sacramento Police Academy\, serves as a board member for NACA\, and is a law enforcement trainer with the Humane Society of the United States. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/recognizing-and-understanding-bias-for-the-animal-welfare-professional/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/9/24 - Unleashing Potential: The Canine CellMates Model for Developing and Implementing a Human-Canine Rehabilitation Program - NACA
DESCRIPTION:Canine CellMates is an innovative 501(c)(3) that strives to create meaningful\, positive connections between people facing felony charges and rescue dogs saved from local municipal shelters. \nBoth in and out of custody\, Canine CellMates facilitates programs in Fulton County (Atlanta)\, Georgia\, that utilize the healing power of shelter dogs to break the cycle of incarceration for individuals in our community\, providing a safe environment for meaningful self-reflection and personal growth. \nThe in-custody program serves pre-trial inmates in the Fulton County Jail. For ten weeks\, the program participants live and work alongside the dogs they train\, using positive reinforcement training methods only. During their time together\, the men and dogs form meaningful bonds and develop essential life skills. At the end of the 10-week cycle\, they graduate in a joyful ceremony that showcases their progress. \nThe out-of-custody program\, called “Beyond the Bars\,” is an intensive\, year-long program that serves as an alternative to a prison sentence for selected individuals—helping men return home to their families while giving them the life skills and the safe space to practice making better decisions and building a better future. \nHaving explored the structural and penological underpinnings of this model in an earlier session\, we focus here on how programs like this can be set up and function in other jurisdictions for the ultimate benefit of individual defendants and their families\, rescued animals\, and the community as a whole. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/unleashing-potential-the-canine-cellmates-model-for-developing-and-implementing-a-human-canine-rehabilitation-program/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/11/24 - Is Intermittent Reinforcement Always Good? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Intermittent reinforcement is a common method used in positive dog training. For mot trainers\, continuous reinforcement is recommended until the learner successfully understand the behavior that is being cued\, then the trainer will often recommend switching from continuous to intermittent reinforcement. Many trainers use the example of intermittent reinforcement being like a slot machine sometimes you get a pay out and sometimes you don’t. The phycology behind the idea is to get the learner to continue to do the behavior even when a reward is not immediately present. \nIntermittent reinforcement can be a great method but we also need to look at the other side of intermittent reinforcement. In abuse situations\, intermittent reinforcement can also be associated with something called a “trauma bond”. This is where an abuser brings flowers one day and abuses the next. This type of intermittent reinforcement will “bond” the victim to the abused but as positive reinforcement animal trainers\, we need to make sure that our training methods are not turning into something aversive. \nLearning Objectives \n\nWhy intermittent reinforcement is commonly recommended in the dog training world\n How intermittent reinforcement is “supposed to” work\nWhy intermittent reinforcement can backfire\nUnderstanding trauma bond in domestic violence and how it relates to dog\ntraining\nImportant things to consider when using or recommending intermittent reinforcement\nWays to make intermittent reinforcement positive\n\nPresenter Riley  BA\, RVT\, CPDT KA\, KPA-CTP \nShannon Riley is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer\, Registered Veterinary Technician\, Wellness Coach\, and Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner. Shannon has been a pet lover all her life and a dog trainer for over 20 years. She has spent her life observing\, caring for and training animals of all kinds. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/11/24 - Why is My Dog “Ignoring” My Cue? - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all experienced that moment where we deliver a cue\, and our dog just doesn’t respond. It could be in a training session at home\, it could be when we are asking our dog to demonstrate their new trick to a friend\, it could be in a class setting\, or it could be in the middle of a competition run. \nIt is common to hear people say that if a dog doesn’t respond to a cue\, then they “didn’t understand”\, but sometimes we are sure that our dog does know what the cue means. At other times we hear people say that their dog is “blowing them off” (i.e. that their dog does know what the cue means\, but their dog is actively choosing to ignore the person / cue)\, but is this really a common reason for a dog to “ignore” a handler’s cue? \nIn this webinar we discuss the myriad of reasons why our dog may not respond to our first cue when cued to perform a behavior\, including; lack of understanding\, enjoying an alternative behavior\, lack of adequate motivation\, arousal in excess of optimal levels\, physical discomfort (present or anticipated)\, mental / emotional discomfort (present or anticipated)\, fatigue (physical / mental)\, and situations when the behavior is perceived as too “high effort”. \nObviously understanding why our dog is not rapidly and accurately responding to our first cue to perform a behavior is crucial to resolving the issue\, hence in this webinar we discuss all the potential reasons in detail. We also discuss strategies for ensuring that our dog does respond to our first cue on each occasion. \nPresenter: Sharon Carroll \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/15/24 - A Life Worth Living: Promoting Well-Being in our Animal Companions - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:How do we assess welfare and well-being in animals? What’s the difference between the two? This webinar will walk attendees through the current scientific thinking on the most effective ways to evaluate well-being\, or positive welfare\, in animals. We start with the Five Domains model and move onto another\, more updated model\, that has replaced the original Five Domains. These models are based directly on the latest research on well-being and will be applicable to anyone that works with animals. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Kristina Spaulding has been in the dog training and behavior profession for over 20 years. She has a PhD in biopsychology—the study of the biological basis of behavior—and is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist. She also has a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She is particularly interested in stress\, neurobiology\, cognition\, emotion\, and wellbeing and how to apply these concepts to the prevention and early intervention of behavior problems in dogs. In addition to working with behavior clients\, Dr. Spaulding teaches a variety of online courses and webinars on the science of behavior through her website\, www.smartdogtrainingandbehavior.com. She also regularly presents on canine behavior science at conferences and other events. \nIn 2019\, Dr. Spaulding received the Association of Professional Dog Trainer’s (APDT’s) Member of the Year Award. She currently serves on the IAABC Foundation Board and the Fear Free Advisory group. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/webinars-events/webinars-2/a-life-worth-living/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/16/24 - The Missing LINK in Social Work: Addressing Animal Abuse to Improve Delivery of Services to Vulnerable Victims - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:For far too long\, social work has conspicuously ignored companion animals’ impact on human well-being and functioning\, the powerful human-animal attachments that enhance or hinder clients’ responses to interventions\, and the Links between inter-personal and inter-species violence. A systemic “PAWS” Gap — People and Animals’ Welfare and Safety – in social work training and practice makes social workers ill-equipped for the “3-Rs” — Recognition\, Response\, and Referral — regarding clients’ concerns involving animals. The PAWS Gap affects clients’ quality of life\, decision-making\, and potential escalation into domestic\, child\, elder and animal abuse. \nThis webinar will identify six reasons why social workers should be aware of human-animal relationships and nine career opportunities\, with action steps\, to reduce the ”PAWS” Gap\, improve the delivery of services\, identify clients’ risk and resiliency factors\, enhance social and environmental justice\, and improve responses to all vulnerable members of families and communities. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/the-missing-link-in-social-work-addressing-animal-abuse-to-improve-delivery-of-services-to-vulnerable-victims/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/24/24 - Who let the dogs out? Unleashing solutions: Finding solutions to the problem of Fiji's free-roaming dog population - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:Overpopulation of dogs is an issue in Fiji\, similar to many other South Pacific and industralized nations worldwide. This presentation explores results from a door-to-door survey in the Tavakubu ward of Lautoka\, highlighting the impacts of human behavior in maintaining free-roaming dog populations\, including ownership apathy\, indiscriminate feeding\, and low compliance with responsible pet ownership practices. Our findings underscore the importance of understanding the negative impacts of “toxic charity” and emphasize the need to shift from predominantly shelter-based strategies and free-of-charge services to promoting responsible dog ownership and caregiver behaviors. Outputs of this study underscore the importance of ongoing evaluation of knowledge\, attitudes\, and practice (KAP) studies to understand how animal welfare initiatives can support community behavior changes that foster sustainable\, long-term dog population management strategies. \nThis event will be recorded and the recording will be available the day after the event. \nSpeakers: \nCasey Quimby – Co-Founder and Managing Trustee\, Animals Fiji \nCasey is an Animerican-Fijian with nearly 15 years of experience operating a shelter and multiple veterinary clinics throughout Fiji. Casey has been a pivotal figure in the region’s animal welfare efforts. She earned her Master’s Certificate in Shelter Medicine from the University of Florida in 2018 and has been at the forefront of data collection and population management in Fiji over the past four years. Her dedication to developing evidence-based\, research-informed strategies has significantly contributed to sustainable and humane solutions for companion animal population management in local communities. \nDr Jessica Hoopes – Animals Fiji Volunteer \nJessica is a Canadian Veterinarian with over 10 years’ experience working in veterinary and shelter medicine and animal management in Canada\, Fiji\, Papua New Guinea\, Costa Rica\, and Australia. Her experiences working in the Pacific Islands have underscored the importance of developing evidence-based\, research informed strategies for addressing free roaming cat and dog populations\, that are tailored to the needs of the local community. While currently working as the One Health Research Coordinator for Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC)\, she spent the past 5 years remotely supporting rescue groups in Fiji in developing a framework for baseline data collection with the hopes of informing sustainable and humane solutions for companion animal population management. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/7/24 - Behavior and Training Webinar: 'De visita al veterinario' - "A friendly vet visit" - Every Dog Austin
\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.everydogaustin.org/event-details/de-visita-al-veterinario-a-friendly-vet-visit

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/14/24 - Understanding Dog Body Language Using T.E.M.P. - Every Dog Austin
DESCRIPTION:Dogs don’t speak human but their body can say millions of words. In this webinar you will gain a better understanding of reading a dogs body language through T.E.M.P. (Tail\, Ears/Eyes\, Mouth\, and Posture) \nFREE event\, donations optional! \nThis webinar is part of Every Dog Behavior and Training’s  BIPOC Speaker Series. \nAbout the Speaker:  Aaron Jones \nI worked as a Vet Tech for over 12 years. Although I enjoyed my role dearly\, there was still something missing. The medical side of care just did not feel like I was where I was supposed to be. I had always wanted to volunteer raising puppies to become service dogs\, so I started researching non-profit organizations. I soon found one and attended my first meeting and was hooked. Training dogs is what makes me feel complete. It’s my calling.  I attended Animal Behavior College where I earned my certification as a Certified Dog Trainer.  I am a dog lover first\, and a dog trainer second. I know from first-hand experience the difference dog training makes in the relationship between dog and owner. I believe in creating an unbreakable bond and a trusting relationship between dog and human using positive reinforcement techniques. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.everydogaustin.org/event-details/understanding-dog-body-language-using-t-e-m-p
