SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/15/22 - Vibrant\, Vulnerable Village Dogs and What We Can Learn About Our Pets From Them - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Many dog guardians\, dog behaviour experts\, and dog researchers have a keen interest in village dogs (and other dogs who live at large). Some of the interest is simple: a curiosity about how these dogs live. However\, some people suggest that village dogs live a life which is much improved\, welfare-wise\, over the life of a pet dog. In this webinar\, dog trainer and anthropologist Kristi Benson will provide an introduction to village dogs (including definitions and geography). She will also review welfare-compromised and positive aspects of village dogs lives before looking at some of the lessons we can learn for pet dogs: enrichment\, foraging\, socializing\, environmental choices\, and so on. She will also comment on some of the potential pitfalls and flaws in the discussions about village dogs. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nEvaluate sources of expertise on village dogs and dog welfare\nUnderstand the difference between seeking good consequences vs. getting relief\, and why those separate motivations matter to this\ntopic\nIdentify the naturalistic fallacy in the context of discussing village dogs\nDevelop new ways to improve pet dog welfare based on lessons from village dogs\n\nAbout the Presenter \nKristi Benson is an honours graduate of\, and now on staff at\, the Academy for Dog Trainers. At the Academy\, she is a student mentor and coach\, and is in charge of the weekly webinars. Kristi is also in charge of special projects\, including the Husbandry Project\, which is a large co-operative veterinary care research study working with hundreds of dog owners\, testing the efficiency and usefulness of a series of training plans. In her private practice\, Kristi works with dog guardians through her self-paced online classes. She also loves helping both the dogs and the humans in the equation and brings her trademark combination of humour and compassion to her courses\, no matter the topic. \nKristi also enjoys reaching out to dog owners through writing. Besides her own blog\, she also regularly writes for the Academy for Dog Trainers’ blog and is a Special Correspondent to Zazie Todd’s Companion Animal Psychology. For ten years\, she ran a sled dog micro-rescue with her partner\, and fostered\, house-trained\, obedience-trained\, and re-homed racing sled dogs. She lives rurally in northern British Columbia\, Canada. She has gained the PCBC-A credential\, is Fear Free certified\, and is on the Fear Free Speaker’s Bureau. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4986127

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/17/22 - "Cats Gotta Cat!: Environmental Enrichment for the Feline Patient" - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Those of us who share our lives with cats are very aware that\, behaviorally speaking\, they have diverged very little from their wild ancestors. Although studies are clear that our feline companions live much safer and longer lives when kept indoors\, these “house panthers” need an environment that provides them with the opportunity to express the unique\, species specific behaviors they share with their larger counterparts. A home lacking these outlets results in a condition of chronic stress which can cause unwanted behaviors from\, and impact the physical health of\, your cat. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Jenny Biehunko will cover: \n—How a cat’s environment affects behavioral issues such as house soiling\, destructive behavior\, and social conflict as well as medical problems such as skin\, endocrine\, and urinary disorders.\n—Designing and optimizing an enriched environment for indoor cats and choosing a layout that works for each individual\n—Implementing an enrichment plan and incorporating enrichment into treatment plans for both medical and behavioral issues. \nAnd much more! \nDr. Jenny Beard Biehunko is a 1998 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Soon after beginning small animal practice\, Jenny developed a special interest in Behavioral Medicine\, and she began seeing behavior cases in a private practice setting. In 2017\, she began a Residency with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists under the mentorship of Dr. Lynne Seibert. Jenny teaches courses in Ethology and Behavior at both the Auburn and Tuskegee Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to practicing small animal medicine\, she owns a behavior exclusive practice in Birmingham\, Alabama\, where she focuses primarily on canine\, feline\, equine\, and avian cases. She also has a passion for working with the local veterinary and shelter communities on integrating lower stress and humane handling methods into their practices. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1472665409779268109

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/1/22 - Maddie's® Insights: Gabapentin and Behavior Modification for Shelter Cats - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s® Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. This month’s webinar is presented by Dr. Karen van Haaften\, DACVB\, and Bailey Eagan\, MSc\, PhD Student. \nCats entering shelters often experience fear\, anxiety\, and stress while in care. Mitigating negative states in cats is critical to their health and well-being\, especially in populations of fearful cats that are already at risk for poor outcomes. One particularly at-risk population are fearful cats rescued from animal hoarding environments. In this presentation\, results will be shared from a new study assessing using a standardized behavior modification program and daily gabapentin administration to treat fearful cats from hoarding environments. Further\, instructions and resources for conducting behavior modification in shelters will be shared\, along with a summary of a growing body of research and in-shelter experience demonstrating that many fearful cats from hoarding environments are treatable in shelters and can have positive outcomes in homes. \nREGISTER HERE: https://maddies.fund/WebcastRegisterGabapentin \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastGabapentin \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nAbout the Presenters\nDr. Karen van Haaften\, DACVB\, Veterinary Behaviorist\, Behavioral Sciences Team\, ASPCA (Canada) \nDr. Karen van Haaften\, DACVB\, graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2009. She spent 5 years in clinical small animal practice and developed a special interest in clinical behavior. In 2014\, she was selected for a residency in Clinical Animal Behavior at the University of California at Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. During her residency\, she studied the effects of oral gabapentin on reducing signs of stress in cats with a history of fearful or aggressive behavior during veterinary exams. After completing her residency in 2017\, Dr. van Haaften joined the British Columbia SPCA as the Senior Manager of Behavior & Welfare\, a position which she held for 5 years. \nBailey Eagan\, MSc\, PhD Student\, University of British Columbia \nBailey Eagan is a PhD student specializing in animal behavior and welfare in animal shelters. SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/1/22 - Community Engagement: The Lifesaving Philosophy - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:The term “community engagement” gets thrown around a lot\, as if it is something that an officer can do if they have a few extra minutes.  To unlock the full potential of community engagement\, however\, we must start thinking of it as less of a project and more of a state of mind. This lifesaving philosophy will not only help save the lives of animals but could potentially save an officer’s life as well.  In this course you will learn how embracing community engagement as a mindset can\, and will\, increase lifesaving efforts and officer safety.   \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. \nPresenter: \nNick Walton is the National Shelter Support Manager for Best Friends Animal Society\, providing leadership and training for strategic shelter partners across the country. Through Best Friends’ national shelter support program\, Nick conducts professional shelter operations and field assessments\, and leads progressive\, humane trainings for animal control agencies and officers.  \nPrior to joining Best Friends and serving as the behavior and training coordinator for the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Atlanta\, Nick spent several years working as an animal control officer for Fulton County Animal Services through LifeLine Animal Project. Through this work\, he served as Fulton County’s primary field training officer\, providing professional training and development to new officers and cultivating a community-oriented approach to animal services in order to help Atlanta become a no-kill city. \n \nNick’s many years of experience as a dog trainer and behavior specialist combined with his commitment to keeping pets safe at home through proactive neighborhood engagement have resulted in a deep expertise in and love for community-based lifesaving. Once known around town as “the Dog Food Man\,” he has a reputation for building trust and key relationships with lasting positive effects for both pets and people.  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/community-engagement-the-lifesaving-philosophy/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/1/22 - Toward a New Understanding of the Constructional Aggression Treatment - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Since I released CAT in 2006 with Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz\, there have been some modifications to increase its effectiveness\, and indeed\, its palatability to trainers. As I have been known to say\, Science-Based training is not about finding the One Big Eternal Truth to worship. It’s about continued exploration and experimentation\, and changing your behavior based on your (and others’) discoveries. \nThis presentation will be an overview of the Constructional Aggression Treatment (CAT) with an emphasis on how it has been improved. I’ll go over what the Constructional Approach is\, the importance of environment\, and\, importantly\, adding the term “Alert” to our aggression vocabulary. \nPresenter: Kellie Snider \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/9/22 - Premedication\, Setting the Scene for Smooth Anesthesia - Think Anesthesia
DESCRIPTION:Register for this month’s live webinar Think Anesthesia: Premedication\, Setting the Scene for Smooth Anesthesia presented by Karen Kerr\, BA\, BVSc (Hons)\, MANZCVS (Anesthesia & Analgesia). Medications administered prior to anesthetic induction influence the ensuing anesthetic event and affect the patient’s overall experience. Premedication offers veterinary professionals an opportunity to minimize patient stress\, pre-emptively reduce pain\, and improve the likelihood of a smooth anesthetic induction\, maintenance\, and recovery. Veterinary professionals may use different medications and strategies based on the individual needs of the patient to reduce the risk of complications and optimize their anesthetic procedure. This presentation provides a goal-directed approach to developing a framework for anesthetic premedication in dogs and cats\, with case-based examples to reinforce appropriate variations. This presentation is worth 1 hour of RACE (pending) CE for veterinary technicians and veterinarians. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.thinkanesthesia.education/live-webinar/2022/11/think-anesthesia-premedication-setting-the-scene-for-smooth-anesthesia
