DESCRIPTION:This is Part One of a two-part webinar on working with “atypical” dogs. Both webinars are stand-alone webinars covering a different aspect of this topic\, but they combine to cover the topic more broadly. \nWhen we train our dogs\, we are constantly asking them to solve puzzles. We are asking them to connect the dots between the cue (context cue or human initiated verbal / visual cue)\, their subsequent behavior (action)\, and the reinforcement. As our dog becomes more confident about the connection between these elements\, they can respond more rapidly and with improved accuracy. \nDuring the learning process there will be moments of frustration and confusion. Typical dogs deal with small amounts of frustration and confusion in a way that helps them find a solution to the puzzle. This leads to the dog attaining reinforcement\, which results in them putting in the same or greater effort on future learning-oriented tasks. \nAtypical dogs however do not respond in the same way. For a range of underlying reasons\, the training puzzle itself may cause an excessive spike in arousal in these dogs. This is commonly referred to as the dog “stressing down” or “stressing up” depending on the observable behaviors. “Stressing down” behaviors may include shutting-down\, stalling\, looking away\, appearing disinterested\, freezing\, moving slowly\, or performing avoidance\, escape\, appeasement\, or displacement behaviors. “Stressing up” behaviors may include barking at the human or at the task\, whining\, performing rapid sequences of random un-cued behaviors\, anticipating cues\, spinning\, doing zoomies\, lacking focus\, and attempting to guess at the solution with little thought. \nBeyond training pressures\, these dogs may also struggle more than usual with environmental pressures. All dogs need a certain amount of desensitization and distraction training in order to successfully function in bigger environments\, but the atypical dog may be extremely aware of stimuli in the environment. This requires additional training steps and more detailed monitoring. \nIn this “Part One” webinar we discuss: \n\nThe underlying factors that contribute to the development of an atypical dog\, including genetic traits and the impact of prior learning.\nWays to identify the difference between a simple training gap\, and a more complex problem.\nWhen to use classical conditioning versus operant conditioning.\nMethods for measuring the proportional impact the environment is having on our dog’s behavior.\n\nWe also look at a range of solutions that can create a more focused\, happier\, and more consistently successful training partner. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

However\, despite many shelters and rescues providing various pet support services for the past few decades\, there has been little demonstratable reduction in owner surrendered animals. Currently\, many animal shelters use data collected at intake\, such as surrender reasons\, to create programs that aim to support pet owners to keep their pets. This presentation will outline research into animal shelters\, pet owning communities\, self-rehoming platforms\, and pet owners to demonstrate the complex system of pet surrender. Her work there created the Medical Triage and Wellness Clinic which is now the largest foster-centric medical clinic in the country and sees upwards of 7\,500 medical cases each year. In 2017\, her national work began in shelter clinic management\, disease management\, and outbreak response. The Animal Rescue League of Boston recognized this shift and updated its mission and vision to include bringing veterinary and wellness services directly to those who need it most\, ensuring that animals are safe and healthy in communities rather than shelters. \nThis case study explores the journey of the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Wellness Waggin’ program\, from its conception to implementation\, including steps like determining a target area\, building community relationships\, securing funding\, and launching a pilot program. Each tribal nation’s relationship with the United States federal government and state governments is unique and layered with complex forms of oppression and injustice. These relationships become more complicated with advocacy for companion animals\, domestic animals\, and wildlife who live on federally recognized reservations\, when many tribal nations are still fighting for basic human rights\, civil rights\, and federal recognition. \nGiven the expansiveness of tribal law and the uniqueness of each tribal nation\, this webinar will highlight some common themes different tribal cultures share that are specific to animals; the struggles that occur in advocating for tribal nations’ needs and the needs of animals who live on reservations; and the challenges that exist with the imposition of mainstream culture onto tribal cultures. \nThis webinar will then propose collaborative methods with tribal nations that create solutions\, which uplift all beings within tribal nations’ lands and legal jurisdictions. \nPresenter \n\nAs a Criminal Justice Program Fellow\, Jessica Chapman works with the ALDF to address crimes against animals\, partnering with stakeholders across the criminal justice system to resolve both the impetus and impact of animal cruelty. \nJessica earned a B.A. from the University of California\, Berkeley where she double majored in Slavic Languages and Literature and Native American Studies (honors). DESCRIPTION:A major welfare concern in animal shelters is excessive barking from kenneled dogs. This contributes to noise pollution\, can cause hearing damage\, and has a negative impact on all animals within earshot. This study demonstrated that by implementing a simple classical counterconditioning exercise\, consisting of instructing all ward passers-through to toss treats to each dog regardless of behavior exhibited\, could change the emotional state of dogs from negative to more positive\, thus reducing fear and frustration that often leads to excessive barking. \nData analysis showed that implementation of this simple exercise did reduce barking at clinically relevant levels even with a changing shelter population. Additionally\, for each percent increase in compliance rate\, there was an average decrease of 17.3 dB in the maximum decibel reading. Moreover\, an overall positive change in attitude from most dogs towards visitors further showed the positive effects of the study. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nAttendees will learn to identify and apply basic learning theory\, specifically focusing on Classical (Pavlovian) Conditioning\, to dogs in a kennel setting.\nAttendees will learn to identify risks and consequences of noise pollution in shelters\, and also ways to reduce it to improve welfare of all species in the shelter.\n\nCan’t attend the live event?
