Having a background in numbers has helped her develop innovative\, successful social media strategies specifically for animal care & control organizations with highly successful results increasing visibility & reach to improve online reputations through social networking platforms. \nIn 2016\, Angelina was awarded the first social media contract for Sonoma County Animal Care & Control increasing their Facebook page likes from 4K to 25K\, engagement rate from 500 to 150K (average)\, 2.2M during disaster-related events\, and contributed to increasing live animal release rate from 82% to 91%\, saving thousands of animals lives. From 2016 through 2020 Sonoma County went through 4 major disaster related events. After working through so many disasters and emergencies\, while being mentored by an experienced operations manager\, she also successfully researched\, designed\, and implemented a successful disaster preparedness plan for the online community and their companion animals. \nAngelina has also created educational webinars to help other animal shelters and animal response teams become more prepared for future events. SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/9/23 - Maddie's Insights: Short-Term Foster Programs for Shelter Cats: Beneficial or Problematic? - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Every year millions of cats enter animal shelters in the U.S. alone. Interventions are greatly needed that have the potential to reduce cat stress and increase cat welfare while in the shelter environment. Although dog foster programs have become commonplace for many animal shelters\, cat foster programs are relatively uncommon\, potentially due to the belief that cats may be at risk of unnecessary stress from the fostering experience. In the study\, researchers examined the social behavior and stress levels of cats that stayed in the shelter to cats that left the shelter for short-term foster\, either for 1-night or 1-week. The results of the study indicate that shelter cats placed in foster care were not at a disadvantage. These findings can benefit both cats and animal shelters alike. Attendees will learn more about the study and how to apply the findings of the research to help reduce stress and promote welfare for cats living in animal shelters. The research discussed in this webinar was made possible by a grant from Maddie’s Fund®\, #ThankstoMaddie. \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nThis program has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. \nAbout the presenter\nKristyn Vitale\, PhD\nDr. Vitale received a Ph.D. in Animal Science from Oregon State University and a Master’s in Environmental Science from Miami University. She holds a B.S. in Zoology and a B.A. in Social Geography from Kent State University. Her areas of specialization are animal behavior and human-animal interaction. Her research focuses specifically on domestic cat behavior\, cat social cognition\, and the cat-human relationship. She has worked professionally with cats for over 15 years. During her graduate career she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow\, a Visiting Research Fellow at Kyoto University in Japan\, and Maddie’s Postdoctoral Scholar. Her research on cat behavior and human-animal interaction has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Her innovative research has generated significant international attention from media outlets including Science\, National Geographic\, The New York Times\, and The Times of London. She has taught a variety of courses on animal behavior and welfare\, including courses focused on enrichment\, learning\, and behavior modification. She is also a cat trainer who has taught kitten training classes and offered socialization opportunities to cats of all ages. In 2005\, she was awarded the AVMA Animal Welfare Award for her leadership and contributions to advancing feline medicine and behavior. DESCRIPTION:Animal trainers often talk about first teaching a behavior and then later adding a cue for that behavior. However\, while your animal is learning a behavior\, your animal is also learning environmental cues\, even if you are not aware of them. Behaviors and cues evolve together. When you return to working in this setting or with these props\, your animal will be ready to do this behavior again. So\, if you try to teach a new behavior under these same conditions\, the learning will be slow. This is because the cues for the original behavior will interfere with the acquisition of the new behavior. Instead\, you can speed up learning by changing the environmental cues. This presentation will explain how these cues evolve. Then\, we’ll look at several case studies and explore how you can use this knowledge to speed up learning. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Donald M. Baer. During his graduate training\, he also worked closely with Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz’s areas of interest include antecedent control of behavior\, generalization\, behavioral cusps\, fluency-based teaching\, treatment of autism\, teaching of academic behavior\, animal training\, rule-governed behavior\, and contingency-shaped behavior. He has served on several editorial boards\, including the Journal of Precision Teaching\, the European Journal of Behavior Analysis\, and the International Journal of Psychology and Psychological Therapy. SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/1/23 - Changing Behavior by Arranging Antecedents with Kathy Sdao - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Animal trainers and behavior consultants sometimes overlook or undervalue Level 2 (Antecedent Arrangements) of the Humane Hierarchy. This six-level progression of behavior-change procedures\, arranged so that the least intrusive and most positive interventions come first\, was introduced by Dr. Susan Friedman in 2010. (See What’s Wrong With This Picture? Effectiveness is Not Enough) We may be tempted to skip ahead to familiar operant training procedures such as positive reinforcement (Level 3) & differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (Level 4). Antecedent arrangements (Level 2) suggest we first notice and adjust the learner’s environment in ways that facilitate the behaviors we wish to reinforce. It invites us to be creative in changing conditions that precede these behaviors\, with the goal of making learning more effective and efficient. Level 2 is much broader than simply “managing the environment” to prevent problem behaviors from occurring. We’ll look at specific examples of antecedent arrangements drawn from Kathy’s work with behavior-consultation clients. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 2\, KPA 2\, & IAABC Pending \nAbout the Presenter: \nKathy Sdao is an applied animal behaviorist. She’s been a full-time animal trainer for almost forty years\, first with marine mammals and then with dogs. At the University of Hawaii\, she received a master’s degree working with a research team that trained dolphins to understand sign-language. She then worked for the United States Navy training dolphins for open-ocean military tasks. Kathy also worked as a marine-mammal trainer at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma Washington. After leaving the zoo world\, she co-created Tacoma’s first dog-daycare. \nKathy launched Bright Spot Dog Training in 1998. Services include consulting with families about their challenging dogs and mentoring professional trainers who want to maximize the power of positive-reinforcement training. Kathy is proud to be an original faculty member for Karen Pryor’s ClickerExpos; she’s taught at more than forty of these popular conferences.
