SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/3/22 - Do You Have Compassion Fatigue? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:As someone who loves animals or who works in the animal field you may commonly experience compassion fatigue. Compassion Fatigue is a real problem in the animal welfare field and we need to be aware of it. \nLearning Objectives \n\nWhat is Compassion Fatigue?\nHow to address compassion fatigue\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout Your Presenter\nShannon Riley-Coyner is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer\, Registered Veterinary Technician\, Wellness Coach\, and Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner. Shannon has been a pet lover all her life and a dog trainer for over 20 years. She has spent her life observing\, caring for and training animals of all kinds. She has worked in the Bird Department at Marine World Africa USA\, and worked as a handler and trainer for an African Serval Cat at Safari West\, a private zoo in Santa Rosa\, California. She has participated in behavior studies including observations of bald eagles and addax antelope through the San Francisco Zoo and Safari West. \nHer education includes a Biology Degree\, specializing in Zoology from Sonoma State. She is a Registered Veterinary Technician\, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer\, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers\, a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner and a member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. Shannon has also spoken at the Annual APDT (Association of Professional Dog Trainers) conferences the past 2 years and covered topics such as “Compassion Fatigue” and “What Is Your Dog’s Currency?” \nShannon’s dog training philosophy revolves around force free\, positive reinforcement\, however\, her ultimate goal is for healthy happy relationship between pets and their people. Diet\, exercise\, environment and training all play significant roles in achieving this goal. Shannon spent many years as the head dog trainer for PAWS for Healing\, a pet assisted therapy organization. She performed temperament testing and assisted in the training of therapy dogs who visited hospitals\, veteran groups\, special educational facilities and convalescent homes. She believes strongly in the benefits of developing the human animal bond and can assist in coaching for pets and their human companions to develop that connection. Shannon can provide assistance with training\, weight management\, exercise and other behavior modifications for your dog or other pets in the Ventura area. \nShannon’s Book “The Evolution of Dog Training” is now available on Amazon or Barnes & Noble! \nThis was previously aired at Geek Week 2021. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4605639

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/3/22 - Managing Difficult Volunteers: How and When to Let Volunteers Go - NACA
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are the lifeblood of most of our organizations. But what should you do when a volunteer just isn’t “working out?” \nDuring this webinar\, we’ll discuss why it is so hard to let a volunteer go\, reasons why it is a liability to continue working with a bad volunteer\, communication instead of confrontation\, the importance of documentation\, the steps to take before reaching the point of termination and the role of exit interviews with volunteers. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenters:\nLori Todd attended Appalachian State University with the intention to pursue a career in Accounting and Human Resources. After having jobs in both fields\, she decided that this was not what she wanted. \nLori discovered her passion after taking a part-time job on a whim at a private animal boarding facility with pampered pets. Later\, while accompanying a friend who was filling out applications for the City of Charlotte (North Carolina)\, she was encouraged to apply for an open Animal Control position. She was called in for a job interview and started her new career path in 1996. \nIn 2017\, Lori was offered the position of Volunteer and Event Supervisor for Charlotte Mecklenberg Animal Control\, where her journey continues….. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/managing-difficult-volunteers-how-and-when-to-let-volunteers-go/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/4/22 - Stranger Danger! Advocating for and Advancing Your Human-Reactive Dogs - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:At Dogs Playing for Life’s Stranger Danger webinar\, hosted by Aimee Sadler\, CEO and Founder of DPFL\, you will learn how to work with dogs that are wary of strangers by building their confidence and helping them develop new skills which will enable them to meet new people (and potential adopters) happily and successfully! Even for the private dog trainer or dog owner\, the skills taught in this webinar will help support your stranger danger dog to expand their comfort level when meeting new people at home! \nThis webinar will demonstrate:\n— DPFL’s Assess and Progress approach: fluttering between assessing and influencing behavior to determine how a dog might respond WITHOUT proper human support to determine what training is necessary for successful placement\n— Comprehensive Tool Selection: determining what tool will best support the dog while keeping the handler and others safe during the learning process\n— Principles vs. Methods: determining what approach will teach the dog as efficiently and effectively as possible\n— Creative Proofing: conducting training with the goal of solid generalization of new skills so that dogs are able to work for multiple handlers with clarity and confidence \nCome learn how to safely and effectively reach this segment of the canine population through in-depth behavior analysis\, dynamic video examples\, and practical approaches designed for anyone who is trying to find solutions for the dogs who need this extra human support. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://dogsplayingforlife.com/webinars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/4/22 - March Fourward: The Future is 4 - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The foundation of the Million Cat Challenge rested on Five Key Initiatives\, refined and adapted to shelters of every size and type throughout North America\, which together represented a holistic approach that addressed the “before\, during and after” for any cat at risk of shelter entry. These initiatives were proven by over 3.5 million more cat lives saved by over 1500 Challenger Shelters. \nNow\, #ThanksToMaddie\, we’re thinking bigger. The Five Key Initiatives have expanded to include other species at risk in shelters and evolved into the Four Rights\, with community safety net services\, humane care within the shelter\, and appropriate outcomes for the animals that do come in all working in concert to support one another. Join the co-founder of the Million Cat Challenge and one of the inspirations behind the Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge in imagining and creating a world in which every single shelter is able to provide every animal at risk with the Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome. #MayTheFoursBeWithYou! \nThis webcast will be recorded. Continue the discussion on Maddie’s Pet Forum: https://maddies.fund/MarchFourward \nThe webcast has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nPresenter\nDr. Kate Hurley\, DVM\, MPVM\, is the founding director of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program and co-founder of the Million Cat Challenge\, a shelter-based initiative to save the lives of one million more cats in five years. Over 1\,500 shelters more than tripled that goal\, between them saving over three million cats against their own baseline before joining the challenge. \nHurley’s research interests include welfare of confined dogs and cats\, humane and effective strategies to manage community cats\, and infectious disease prevention. She will always love shelter work because it has the potential to improve the lives of so many animals and the people who work so hard to care for them. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_TpCFmG6YQoerScTGYVyxzQ

SUMMARY:Webinar Series - 2/26/22\, 3/5/22\, and 3/12/22 - The Holy Trinity of Behavior\, Environment & Sociability Behind the Human-Canine Partnership - Puppyworks (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:How the Holy Trinity of Behavior\, Environment & Sociability of dogs and humans creates a unique relationship which you can use to improve your time and activities together. \nMore than a webinar\, we’ll provide an interactive\, behind-closed-doors experience for attendees to see the interconnectedness of the Dog\, the Human & the Environment\, in part from attendee submitted videos. \nSession One: Saturday February 26\, 2022  - HOW YOUR BEHAVIOR MATTERS:\nHuman Sociability – Behavior\, Temperament\, Attitudes & Perception.\nWhat do you\, as a biological organism\, bring to the relationship? How the health and attitudes\, including human temperament of the handler (their own sociability) affect their dogs\, and how biological differences affect perception: for example: dogs hear many things (high frequency) that we do not; and dogs smell far more than we do\, smells that dogs never evolved to\, and that distract them or give them information we are not privy to. You see more 3D\, and you see colors they do not. \nWhat do you bring to the relationship as the trainer?\nAttitudes\, biases\, and experiences all affect the dog-human relationship: most importantly\, confirmation bias; and the brain’s tendency to search for the urgent over the important (crisis survival vs. long term). How human anxiety may inadvertently affect canine behavior. How training timing\, reactions and cognition delays\, all affect how you and your dog interact. \nThere is no other interspecies relationship on Earth like that of the dog and the human.\nNothing rivals the dogs’ co-evolution with humans and our species unparalleled willingness to sacrifice for them. That includes the ability to genetically modify dogs\, and to know what we can change and what we cannot\, money to fix ailing dogs\, to modify diets\, and to otherwise manipulate the interactions. We also created a partner that actively manipulates us. It is no coincidence that dog parks are at such an annoying frequency and look so darned cute to us. \nSession Two: Saturday March 5\, 2022  - WHY ENVIRONMENT MATTERS:\nHow Genetics\, Perceptions and Behaviors Interact with the Environment.\nThe environment messes with everything! Dogs and humans each take in the environment differently\, and the environment interacts with expression of our dog’s and our own genetic traits. \nHow the environment affects biology:\nWhat kinds of traits are inheritable and how much does environment affect them? In particular\, how much of your dog’s personality is fixed\, such as sociability or aggression or curiosity or trainability? How much does the environment affect your dog’s hormones that force its behaviors? Do dogs create pheromones that manipulate us? \nHome\, Sweet Home—from your dog’s viewpoint and yours. \nIt is important that your dog has a home\, right? But does your dog value or want the same things you want in a home? What would they pick if they had a choice? A place filled with couches? A few boulders with a hole underneath? How do they view their home? How different might your dog be if he or she lived with you in a completely different neighborhood\, or moved from a rural environment into the heart of a city or from your city to one on the other side of the globe? \nThe expanded environment—everything away from home. \nSure\, you and your dog love home. What changes when you leave with your dog\, and why you should care. Travel to you and travel to your dog are unlikely to be the same. You know you are off to camp in the mountains. How does your dog know it is not another trip to the vet to get stiches or a cast or… \nSession Three: Saturday March 12\, 2022  – SOCIABILITY IN DOGS:\nCanine Biology\, Behavior & Sociability.\nWhat limits\, capabilities\, and opportunities does the dog\, as a biological organism\, bring to the relationship? \n\nAges and stages of the dog\nWhy breed type matters\nWhy sociability matters.\n\nThere are many ways to assess sociability in shelter dogs\, but less proven ways of assessing it in owned dogs\, since the human-environment so confounds dog behaviors. Sue and Tim hope to get closer to measuring sociability in the owned dog during this webinar series!  And there may soon be genetic tests for sociability as well. \n\nAre we prioritizing sociability enough in breeding? How inheritable is sociability? How do we measure it?\nHow close are we to fully assessing the recent discovery of a dog genomic region matching one in humans who have a syndrome involving hyper-social behavior? Could this lead to more predictability of behavior in the future?\nWhy sociability is the best insurance policy\, given biological limits\, environmental uncertainties\, and humans…well…being human.\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.puppyworks.com/partnership

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/9/22 - The REALLY REAL RELAXATION Protocol with Suzanne Clothier - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne Clothier’s Really Real Relaxation Protocol (RRR) is based on her commitment as a trainer to creating authentic responses rather than faux or “looks like” (but actually is not) behaviors. This requires a careful assessment of what the authentic behavior actually is in terms of arousal\, body language\, response and volitional behavior. RRR promotes true relaxation. \nOther relaxation protocols are based in keeping the dog in a down position in a particular place in the hopes that this will result in relaxation. Remaining in place as directed does not always lead to authentic relaxation. Additionally\, these protocols ignore the importance of social referencing\, expecting the dog to remain in place regardless of what the handler does or does not do; this is more accurately the goal of a well-trained stay. RRR involves the handler and social referencing so that the relaxation becomes a shared response\, not an action independent of the handler and relationship. \nFinally\, being prompted to assume a specific position does not involve volitional behavior or self-modulation\, and remains extrinsically reinforced behavior\, rather than the intrinsically driven choices and reinforcement of choosing the body posture and arousal that is truly aligned with authentic relaxation. Dogs learn self-modulation through discovery\, facilitating behavioral changes and shifts in emotional and cognitive state\, making it ideal for “reactive” dogs. \nRRR is easily taught in one session\, generalizes readily (as with most intrinsically reinforced behaviors)\, is suitable for use with dogs of any age\, in group classes as well as private sessions\, and can be used in any setting where the dog is in the Think & Learn Zone (productive arousal). Handlers do not need specific or sophisticated skills or knowledge\, and RRR is as suitable for children as for adults. \nThis was previously aired at Geek Week 2021. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nGoals \n\nTeaching dog to find authentic relaxation through their own choices.\nTeaching handler to relax with the dog while maintaining connection.\nMaintenance of dog/handler connection that can easily be modulated up or down as desired.\n\nBenefits \n\nSimple\, effective\, quickly established – no need for laborious protocols.\nDog learns to self-modulate through volunteered\, not prompted\, behavior.\nHandler learns to relax themselves while providing social reference for the dog.\nReadily generalized.\nSuitable for any age dog.\nAppropriate for companion\, service\, shelter/foster\, behavior case\, competitive/sport\, and working dogs.\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the value of volitional behavior\, intrinsic reinforcement and social referencing.\nUnderstand the steps involved in teaching RRR.\nBe able to start any dog with RRR.\nUnderstand various applications and considerations for one-on-one and group sessionsBe able to recognize common errors or challenges\n\nRRR is a must-have tool for any trainer. This presentation will cover the details of teaching RRR\, and a variety of applications. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4661223

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/10/22 - Cat Handling & Behavior - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:Understanding cat behavior and using appropriate handling techniques helps the individual cats\, the overall feline population\, and reduces the risk of injury to your team. Cat behavior is complex; however\, this presentation helps to clarify what cats are trying to tell us and shows you ways and tools to keep your team safe. Because stress is directly linked to their immune system\, decreasing the amount of stress cats experience in the shelter will reduce the overall number of cats who get sick in the shelter. Attendees will leave this session with an understanding of safe handling techniques and cage set up for various scenarios including decompression and spot cleaning. \nRelevant for: Supervisors\, animal care attendants\, potentially intake staff if they are handling intake procedures such as vaccinations or transferring cats \nDuration: 1 ½ hours \nPresenters: Alesha Davidson and Jenn Stone \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.calanimals.org/on

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/10/22 - Don’t Get Burned by Blazing Clickers - Dr. Susan G. Friedman - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Trainers in the Karen Pryor tradition have learned that when a clicker is used correctly it precisely marks the animal’s behavior that controls reinforcer. Further\, behavior is strengthened when the clicks become a reliable predictor of backup reinforcement. This is accomplished by ensuring that every click is followed by a well-established reinforcer. However\, some trainers repeatedly mark behavior without backing up the marker\, a practice we call blazing clickers. Blazing clickers weaken the predictive value of the marker\, resulting in slower learning\, increased aggression\, and giving up. In this presentation\, the science-based rationale for following every click with a backup reinforcer will be reviewed\, and we will explore the faulty reasoning often used to support the practice of blazing clickers. With this information\, you will be better able to teach others why and how to avoid getting burned by blazing clickers. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.dog-ibox.com/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/10/22 - Reactive Integration: Putting Pieces Together with Karen Deeds - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:An integrated approach for developing a behavior modification plan when working with fearful and reactive dogs. \nReactivity: The label given to dogs that present with growling\, barking\, lunging\, squealing\, jumping up and down\, or even redirecting to the leash or to the handler at the sight of a trigger\, whether that be another dog\, a person\, or anything else! \nWhen working with reactive dogs\, I believe in an integrated approach…Reinforcement strategies\, changing emotion\, teaching alternative behaviors\, impulse control that creates predictability\, confidence building\, and of course a vast array of behavior modification techniques is all part of the plan. In this way\, you can build a stronger foundation on which behavior modification can be applied. We all know that a weak foundation in anything\, a home\, a relationship\, dog sports\, or dog behavior\, can contribute to weakness in the long run. \nThis webinar will give an overview of the integrated approach taken for working with reactive and fearful dogs. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/17/22 - What Vintage is that Hot Dog? Identifying High Value Reinforcers with Moira Hechenleitner - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Do you wonder what’s your dog’s favorite food? Or favorite reinforcer of another type when food isn’t enough? Have you unsuccessfully tried to use food toys filled with peanut butter to work on challenging situations? Are you starting to believe that your dog might just not be food motivated when exposing him to more complex experiences and/or environments? Do you have a hard time identifying what your dog really wants? \nThe value of a reinforcement is often proportionally inverse to how challenging is a situation\, and there are not only individual preferences\, but also different perceptions of how challenging a determine stimulus can be. \nThrough a “treat tasting” you can objectively measure which foods are within the top five of your dog’s favorites\, and you can successfully and strategically use them to work on different situations\, not only enhancing the counter-conditioning process\, but also increasing the dog’s motivation. \nAnd by learning how to correctly use techniques such as desensitization and counter-conditioning\, and what food or reinforcer are appropriate for each case and situation you can avoid the risk of poisoning food\, and therefore increase the likelihood of success. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/24/22 - Responding to Animal Crimes Through a Restorative Justice Approach - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:As a broad category of penological response that aims to repair the harms crime inflicts on victims\, hold offenders accountable\, and promote resilient communities\, restorative justice has venerable roots. Nonetheless\, the explicit application of restorative justice approaches within the USA’s criminal justice system is quite young – and all but unheard of as applied to crimes with animal victims: abuse\, neglect\, animal fighting\, and animal sexual exploitation. Join Animal Legal Defense Fund criminal justice attorneys for an exploration – rooted in emergent scholarship – of the role restorative justice could play in our legal system’s response to animal cruelty. \nThis session will begin by summarizing the history and current use of restorative justice in the context of the USA’s criminal justice system. Next\, we will examine the ways that a restorative justice framework focuses on animals as the inherent victims of animal cruelty—and therefore as the party who is most in need of an outcome that acknowledges their suffering and – to the extent possible – restores their well-being. Finally\, we will outline what a restorative justice framework might look like as applied to animal cruelty cases – and how it could be drawn on as an option impactful for victims\, offenders\, and communities\, building empathy\, reducing recidivism\, and increasing rehabilitation. \nPresenters\nJessica Chapman\nAs a Criminal Justice Program Fellow for the ALDF\, Jessica Chapman works with the department to address crimes against animals\, partnering with stakeholders across the criminal justice system to resolve both the impetus and impact of animal cruelty. \nJessica earned a B.A. from the University of California\, Berkeley where she double majored in Slavic Languages and Literature and Native American Studies (honors). She earned a J.D. (cum laude) from Michigan State University College of Law\, where Jessica received the 2020 Wanda Nash Award from the Animal Law Section of the Michigan State Bar. Jessica earned an Animal law L.L.M. (magna cum laude) from Lewis & Clark Law School. While at Lewis & Clark\, she was awarded the inaugural 2021 Outstanding Animal Law L.L.M. Graduate Award and earned placement in the Cornelius Honor Society. \nJessica shares her home with two dogs named Patch and Landa. The brothers enjoy hiking through mountains\, camping trips\, and discovering the world together. \nDavid Rosengard\nAs a senior staff attorney in the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Criminal Justice Program\, David Rosengard works with stakeholders across the criminal justice system to pursue justice on behalf of animal cruelty victims. One of his focus areas is amicus briefs\, where he raises appellate-level arguments aimed at enabling courts to reach decisions that not only address the needs of the animals involved in individual cases\, but to also better position animals as a whole within the law. David additionally helms the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s groundbreaking work helping animals who have been harmed by criminal cruelty achieve the legal status of crime victims\, including efforts to expand Courtroom Animal Advocate Programs which allow pro bono attorneys and law students to act as counsel for those animal crime victims in court. \nDavid co-edited and contributed to the second edition of Animal Law in a Nutshell and has published law review articles aimed at assisting prisoners in securing vegan meals (“Three Hots and a Cot and a Lot of Talk”: Discussing Federal Rights-Based Avenues for Prisoner Access to Vegan Meals) as well as illuminating the critical impact legal recognition of animal sentience has on constitutional considerations (A Dog is Not a Stereo: The Role of Animal Sentience in Determining the Scope of Owner Privacy Interests Under Oregon Law). David also teaches animal law at his alma mater—Lewis & Clark Law School\, where he graduated twice with honors\, as both a J.D. and an Animal Law LL.M. student. While a student at Lewis & Clark Law School\, David clerked for the Center for Animal Law Studies\, Co-Directed L&C’s Student ALDF chapter\, worked in Kenya on wildlife and animal cruelty issues\, was an Animal Law Review Editor-in-Chief\, and represented the state of Oregon in criminal court on behalf of the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office as a certified law student. \nPrior to embarking on his legal career\, David earned a B.A. with honors in History and Gender Studies from Claremont McKenna College\, and worked in higher education\, where he focused on sexual assault prevention and response\, peer counseling\, crisis management\, co-curricular education\, sex-blind housing programs\, and community justice. \nDavid lives in Saint Helens\, Oregon with his spouse and a bevy of rescue animals: two cats (Aldor and Papaya) and three dogs (Ace Octavus\, Ellie May\, and Puck). \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/responding-to-animal-crimes-through-a-restorative-justice-approach/
