SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/19/22 - The Association of Genes and Behavior: Finding Relevance for Today - ACVB (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will give some background on genetics\, including parts of a chromosome\, including transcription and translation\, inheritance\, and silencing (epigenetics). I will go into association studies (pros and cons) to provide the audience with some foundation information. I will then discuss the implications coat color (in dogs and cats) may have on temperament\, and present a series of studies of breed heritage (genetics) associated with various traits (i.e. shyness\, boldness\, trainability\, etc). I also intend to touch on some genetic markers associated with behavior problems\, and try to round out the discussion with some information on environmental factors that contribute to behavior. To conclude\, I will highlight how this information should be interpreted with caution but may help with setting up appropriate environments and expectations of owners\, selection of pet vs working dogs\, and preventing/treating anticipated behavior problems. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Lena Provoost currently works at Penn Vet in Philadelphia\, PA as a clinician and lecturer in Small Animal Behavior & Welfare. She enjoys educating students\, her clients\, and treating companion animals afflicted with anxieties\, fears\, and frustrations. Her major interests include all aspects of cognition\, effects and management of pain on behavior\, behavioral genetics\, and the human animal bond. Dr. Provoost admits that most of her spare time is spent running after her two young sons\, but enjoys every minute of it. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dacvb.org/page/webinarseries

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/24/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Outcome - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Our goal for every animal in need is to get them as quickly as possible to the Right Outcome\, whether that involves a trip to the shelter or assistance in the community. The Right Outcome is the one that best supports the well-being of animals\, honors the connections between humans and pets\, stabilizes systems and maintains public health and safety. When we serve animals in the right place\, at the right time\, and provide the right care while working within our capacity\, we make it possible to achieve the right outcome for each individual animal. In this webinar\, Drs. Cindy Karsten and Kate Hurley will discuss how we can ensure the right outcome for pets and people facing challenges big and small. \nThis webinar is part 4 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters\nCynthia (Cindy) Karsten\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\nThroughout her KSMP career\, Dr. Karsten has helped to identify and implement best practice protocols and capacity for care models at shelters across the United States and Canada. Dr. Karsten’s recent work has focused on leading shelter medicine Bootcamps\, concentrated six-week courses for shelter leaders. The Bootcamps combine online learning with twice-weekly Zoom meetings at which participants can ask questions of KSMP experts and share their own experiences with peers making change at other shelters. \nDr. Karsten became board certified in Shelter Medicine Practice in November\, 2017. Her main areas of interest include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, working with shelter leaders on change management\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about equity. \nKate Hurley DVM\, MPVM\, Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge \nDr. Kate Hurley is the founding director of the Koret Shelter Medicine Program and co-founder of the Million Cat Challenge\, a shelter-based initiative to save the lives of one million more cats in five years. Over 1\,500 shelters more than tripled that goal\, between them saving over three million cats against their own baseline before joining the challenge. \nHurley’s research interests include welfare of confined dogs and cats\, humane and effective strategies to manage community cats\, and infectious disease prevention. She will always love shelter work because it has the potential to improve the lives of so many animals and the people who work so hard to care for them. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/24/22 - How to Expand Veterinary Access\, Increase Revenues\, and Prevent Burnout - HASS
DESCRIPTION:Veterinary care is expensive\, and can be hard to access—causing pets to go without needed treatments\, and be given up to shelters. This in turn contributes to burnout among shelter workers\, veterinarians\, and veterinary staff. \nThe Open Door Veterinary Collective is working to change that. This nonprofit\, founded in 2021\, has developed a business model for nonprofit\, for-profit\, and government veterinary clinics that prioritizes access to care\, and increased revenue. In addition to helping keep families together and pets unnecessarily out of shelters\, Open Door sees this model as helping prevent compassion fatigue in veterinarians and staff. \nJoin us May 24 at 5pm CT for a webinar about the Open Door Veterinary Collective hosted by Dr. Sara Pizano\, the founder of Team Shelter USA\, author of The Best Practice Playbook for Animal Shelters\, and a national trainer for Open Door\, and panelists\, Mandy Combs\, Veterinary Practice Manager at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton Veterinary Services and Dr. Stephanye Quinn\, Staff Veterinarian at the Community Pet Care Clinic in Toledo\, Ohio and Veterinary Ambassador for the Open Door Veterinary Collective National Training team. Learn how this model can work for you and your community. \nWe encourage veterinarians\, directors\, and staff of for-profit and public vet clinics and hospitals to attend\, as well as shelter staff and directors\, and veterinary-related shelter community partners. \nCan’t make it live? Still sign up and we’ll send you the recording. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/tJAoc-urpzwsGdPRPBZd2p78HDKUGw9X8Z-M/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/26/22 - Off-Leash Skills for Puppies with Erin Lynes - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Having a puppy off leash can be a nerve-wracking affair! But being able to have your little one safely off leash provides a lot of freedom\, helps prevent over-extending their leash skills\, and allows for the best type of natural exercise for a growing body. \nBut isn’t this a super advanced skill? Isn’t this too hard for puppies? \nNo and no! \nPuppies have some genetic pre-programming that means off-leash training is actually easier when you start earlier! Baby puppies have stronger social motivations\, stronger instincts to follow\, and lack competing reinforcement history from the environment – all factors that help make off leash walks and recalls much easier to introduce sooner than later\, and change with time and experience to make off-leash training harder to start from scratch. \nThis webinar will cover several strategies to help you build your puppy’s off leash skills from the ground up\, will help your recognize developmental milestones that will mean changing your strategy as your puppy ages\, and help you discover the benefits of a shared trust that comes when both you and your puppy are comfortable in off-leash situations. The skills covered in this webinar include recall\, attention\, and boundaries as they relate to being off leash. We’ll also discuss the types of environments that you’ll want to seek out to best teach these skills and the types of challenges that you’ll want to be aware of and plan for\, depending on your puppy’s genetics! Finally\, we’ll discuss under what conditions a particular puppy may not be ready for off-leash training. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
