SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/22 - The Poisoned Cue And Its Implications For Training - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Much is known about discriminative stimuli (cues) that are taught with either reinforcement or punishment contingencies and how these stimuli function as conditioned reinforcers or conditioned aversive stimuli. However\, little is known experimentally about discriminative stimuli established with both reinforcing as well as aversive events. It has been reported that the interaction between reinforcing and aversive events makes the discriminative function somewhat different from other discriminative stimuli (see Hearst & Sidman\, 1961). Karen Pryor (2002) called this phenomenon the poisoned cue. She suggested that a cue\, or discriminative stimulus\, that is established using both reinforcing and aversive events leads to the breakdown of the behavior both preceding and following the cue. This may be due to an increase in avoidance behaviors and the uncertainty that exists regarding the consequence that will follow. The poisoned cue phenomenon is important because it reflects many teaching situations in the real world. Discriminative stimuli in the real world are rarely taught with purely positive reinforcement or purely aversive consequences. \nThis presentation will show an experimental analysis of the poisoned cue and discuss techniques to identify situations that might involve poisoned cues. It will also discuss ways to overcome these cues. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1995 under the direction of Dr. Donald M. Baer. During his graduate training\, he also worked closely with Dr. Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz’s areas of interest include antecedent control of behavior\, generalization\, behavioral cusps\, fluency-based teaching\, treatment of autism\, teaching of academic behavior\, animal training\, rule-governed behavior\, and contingency-shaped behavior. He has served on several editorial boards\, including the Journal of Precision Teaching\, the European Journal of Behavior Analysis\, and the International Journal of Psychology and Psychological Therapy. Dr. Rosales-Ruiz is a fellow of the Eastern Psychological Association and a trustee of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/understanding-poisoned-cues.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/17/22 - The Roundtable: Transport – Best Practices - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:The data from Shelter Animals Count tells us shelters are full right now because there have been more animals entering shelters than leaving them for the past 5 months straight. Traditional methods for alleviating shelter crowding\, including transport\, are proving difficult to implement due to staffing and volunteer shortages\, decreased funding\, and other roadblocks. \nAnimal transport\, at its most basic level\, is a supply and demand equation. However\, there is much more to consider when establishing a successful transport program that benefits communities\, adopters\, over-crowded source organizations\, destination organizations\, and most importantly\, companion animals. This exclusive roundtable conversation will explore the current challenges of companion animal transport and discuss how shelters are adapting in a COVID world. Questions from the audience will follow the roundtable discussion. \nModerated by Jim Tedford\, CAWA\, CEO & President\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement \nThe Roundtable Panel: \n\nCJ Bentley\, Vice President for Animal Welfare\, Atlanta Humane Society\, Georgia\nJillian Sergio\, Executive Director\, Companion Animal Alliance\, Louisiana\nTBA speaker from Wisconsin Humane Society\, Wisconsin\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/RT-08-17-22

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/25/22 - Zen and the Art of Impulse Control - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Most people would agree that we’d like our dogs to have the ability to be zen; to chill out and relax when the situation calls for it. In addition\, we’d like them to think before they act. Mindless reactivity can be difficult to live with and manage in our dogs. \nIn this presentation Dr. Deb Jones is going to discuss her views on zen and the concept of impulse control. She will talk about the common usage of such terms as well as her working definitions\, and issues with the terminology and application. \nShe will talk about the advantages of teaching a dog to be zen and demonstrate specific exercises that can encourage thought before action. In particular\, Deb will focus on both the art and the science of zen work. A clear understanding of the major underlying scientific principles will be very helpful to excellent application and execution of the techniques. \nDeb will discuss the importance of designated markers\, introduce her foundation “bowl” games\, and demonstrate the place/drop/toss technique to build fluency. She will talk about developing control around food and toys\, and also consider broader generalization issues and applications. \nNote: This webinar was originally included as a presentation in the Lemonade Conference\, but has not previously run as a standalone webinar. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Online Event - 8/29/22 - Saving Luna: A Case Study on Rabbit Aggression - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Emily came across a desperate post in a local rabbit rescue Facebook group\, begging someone to take a beautiful rabbit who was scheduled to be euthanized the next day for aggression. She instantly responded to take the case pro bono and would work with anyone who took on this bunny. Shortly after\, Emily received a friend request from the person who was dropping everything to pick up Luna\, and they immediately got to work. As Emily watched Luna throw herself\, growling and snarling\, at the fence separating them\, she wondered if she had bitten off more than she could chew! \nLuna’s aggression is more severe than any case Emily had experienced in her career working with rabbits. Luna’s triggers ranged from everything to the sound of a person approaching to the appearance of food falling into her pen. Anything associated with human interaction was met with a flying leap\, a growl\, and a fierce bite. While Luna’s clear stress and discomfort were a main focus of their efforts\, Emily was equally concerned with giving Luna’s humans the tools to manage her safely\, without (any more) bloodshed! Carefully managing Luna’s triggers\, mindful counterconditioning\, and enrichment were the tools we used to gradually build trust. Luna began to relax\, and so could everyone around her! \nLuna’s story is not just her own\, but the story of many rabbits who are euthanized in shelters for behavior issues. Rabbits whose issues are often created by the environment. This presentation will be useful to anyone who cares for rabbits in any capacity. \nLearning Objectives \n\nThe importance of stress management in aggression cases\nMinimizing triggers in an environment where everything seems to be a trigger\nDeveloping safe ways to interact with and care for an extremely over-threshold animal\nDirect juxtaposition of force-free strategies and force-based common methods in handling rabbit aggression\nManaging learned aggression in bunnies\n\nAbout the Presenter \nEmily earned her BS in Animal Science\, with a specialization in Equine Science\, from the University of Florida. Since 2010\, she has been providing professional behavior assistance to pets and their people. She completed two internships\, one at ZooTampa working primarily with Florida Manatees\, and one at Clearwater Marine Aquarium\, working with dolphins\, otters\, and pelicans. While in school\, she worked with Class Act for Dogs\, in Gainesville\, Florida\, under Dee Zurberg\, an accomplished trainer who emphasized not only kindness to dogs\, but kindness to their people as well. Since then\, she has continued her career in the zoo field working with a variety of species including tigers\, otters\, Flying foxes\, gibbons\, and as well as various avian\, aquatic\, and reptile species. Her main focus\, however\, is caring for orangutans. While not working at the zoo\, she has spent years working with dogs as a group class instructor and behavior consultant at Courteous Canine\, Inc. This led her to create Small Animal Resources\, a place for guardians of small pets to find accurate\, reliable information and to highlight the behavioral needs of small mammals. She has published articles for the Pet Professional Guild and the International Association for Animal Behavior Consultants on various topics related to rabbit care and behavior. She has presented at various conferences\, workshops\, and webinars\, for both the Pet Professional Guild\, the Animal Behavior Management Alliance\, and the Florida Association of Zoos and Aquariums. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4793641

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/7/22 - Understanding and Promoting the Self-Regulation of Behavior - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in developing better self-control in dogs? Then this talk is for you! Executive function refers to the mental processes that are involved in the self-regulation of behavior. For example\, maintaining focus and avoiding distraction\, inhibiting behavior\, adjusting behavior for different environments\, and working toward a goal. \nObviously\, these behaviors are critical for pet\, performance\, and working dogs alike. This webinar is a review of everything we know about the development of executive function in dogs. You don’t want to miss this talk! \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine executive function\nExplain the relationship between executive function attention\, emotional regulation\, impulse control\, stress resilience and behavior issues\nList the factors that influence executive function in dogs\nDiscuss ways of improving executive function in dogs\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, KPA (pending)\, IAABC (pending) \nPresenter: Dr. Kristina Spaulding \nDr. Spaulding has a PhD in biopsychology – the study of the biological basis of behavior – and is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist through the Animal Behavior Society. SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Maddie's Insights: What laboratory studies may tell us about stress in a dog shelter - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. \nThis month\, Dr. Michael Hennessy\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\, will be joined by Regina Willen\, Founder and Director at HALO K9 Behavior. They will discuss how basic scientific research informs our understanding of the stress dogs undergo in a shelter environment. They will examine immediate effects of entry to a shelter as well as potential long-term consequences. How basic research findings suggest practicable means for reducing or preventing these outcomes will also be considered. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion and exchange ideas: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastStress \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FddH0bQWRpiH4HedjwY28A \nPresenters\nMichael Hennessy\, PhD\, Professor of Psychology\, Wright State University\nDr. Hennessy is a behavioral neuroscientist with interests in both basic laboratory research on stress and how this research can be applied to reduce the impact of stress on dogs in animal shelters. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Wright State University in Dayton\, Ohio. He earned his PhD in experimental psychology at Northern Illinois University and then completed post-doctoral training and served as Research Associate in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He subsequently held the position of Research Psychologist at SRI International\, and since coming to Wright State\, has had stints as a visiting scholar at both the California National Primate Research Center at the University of California\, Davis and the Department of Behavioral Biology at the University of Muenster in Muenster\, Germany. \nDr. Hennessy’s basic research focuses primarily on how psychological stressors impact neural and hormonal systems\, how social factors can enhance or reduce these stress responses\, and the lasting impact of stress in early life on later neural and psychological function. His work with dogs is focused entirely on finding means of reducing the stress of shelter housing and its impact on behavior and adoption success. \nDr. Hennessy has served on the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Animal Research and Ethics\, which he chaired in 2018. He is past president of the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Developmental Psychobiology. He previously was named outstanding faculty member of the year at Wright State. He has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the California National Primate Research Center and currently serves on the External Scientific Advisory Board of the Waltham foundation. Dr. Hennessy’s basic research has been funded nearly continuously by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. His work with dogs has been funded by various sources including the Waltham Foundation\, the IAMs company\, and the ASPCA. Dr. Hennessy is author of over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. \nRegina Willen\, Founder and Executive Director\, HALO \nRegina Willen is a Neuroscience and Physiology Scientist. She is a board-certified applied animal behaviorist (ACAAB) with the Animal Behavior Society (ABS) and is an animal behavior consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/8/22 - Touchy Heely: Contact Heeling for Ringsport\, Behavior Work and Life! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Contact heeling” means teaching your dog to maintain physical contact with your body while also allowing them the freedom to look around. You might be moving\, standing still\, sitting in a chair\, or completing a task\, and your dog will press against you to maintain contact! While originally trained for the Sports of French and Mondio Ring\, this skill is useful in crowded environments\, during training classes\, or between working exercises…anywhere dogs frequently lose contact with their handler. In behavior work\, contact heeling can allow both you and your dog to observe the environment while simultaneously retaining physical awareness of each other. So many uses! \nUnlike precision heeling\, there is no expectation of eye contact or a precise position at the handler’s side. Indeed\, the dog can be taught to rotate all the way around the handler – the only criteria is continuous physical contact. As a result\, contact heeling can be relaxing and enjoyable for both parties. \nSound useful? It is! Join Denise Fenzi and learn how she teaches contact heeling\, along with a discussion of the varied ways she uses this skill in both training and in daily life. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars
