SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/12/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Place - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Some animals would be best served by shelter admission\, while others would be better served outside shelter walls. The Right Place is the place that provides the best possible outcome in the most humane and efficient way and may include the animal’s current home\, community\, foster or finder’s home\, partner organizations or the shelter. Determining the Right Place depends on the needs of the animal\, the capacity of the shelter\, and also the capacity and willingness of the community member who brings the animal to our attention. In this webinar\, Drs. Cindy Karsten and Chumkee Aziz will guide you through the framework that allows you to remove decision fatigue and get animals where they need to be—or help them right where they are. \nThis webinar is part 1 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters:\nCynthia (Cindy) Karsten\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\nThroughout her KSMP career\, Dr. Karsten has helped to identify and implement best practice protocols and capacity for care models at shelters across the United States and Canada. Dr. Karsten’s recent work has focused on leading shelter medicine Bootcamps\, concentrated six-week courses for shelter leaders. The Bootcamps combine online learning with twice-weekly Zoom meetings at which participants can ask questions of KSMP experts and share their own experiences with peers making change at other shelters. \nDr. Karsten became board certified in Shelter Medicine Practice in November\, 2017. Her main areas of interest include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, working with shelter leaders on change management\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about equity. \nMehnaz (Chumkee) Aziz\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\n Chumkee obtained her DVM degree at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She then completed an internship at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC in 2013\, which included experience in anti-cruelty work and shelter medicine. Chumkee was a resident at the KSMP from 2013-2016.She headed the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative and served as Senior Director of Shelter Medicine Services at the ASPCA before returning to the KSMP in January\, 2022 as an outreach veterinarian. \nHer current interests include the role of community collaboration in mitigating pet homelessness\, proactive shelter population management\, and infectious disease prevention in shelters. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/13/22 - Handling “Nuisance” Wildlife Calls - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Getting calls from the public about opossums stuck in garbage cans? Foxes denning under sheds or porches? Woodchucks nibbling in the garden? \nThis webinar expands upon our “Top 10 Tips for Taking Wildlife Calls” training by providing natural history profiles on our most common Wild Neighbors (including skunks\, squirrels\, raccoons\, opossums\, woodchucks\, foxes\, coyotes\, and more!)\, as well as species-specific advice for humanely solving conflicts with them. Learn how to give simple tips and instructions to the public over the phone (without your having to dispatch an officer!) so that they can solve conflicts with wildlife in an effective\, humane\, and long-term manner. \n  \n \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/5/22 and 4/13/22 - Alternatives to Declaw - CVMA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we will explore how cat scratching—a normal feline behavior—can lead to one of two unwanted consequences: either the owner seeks a permanent solution and asks for a surgical solution known as “declawing\,” or the animal is rehomed or surrendered to a shelter. We will address the importance of cats performing normal behaviors\, such as appropriate opportunities to scratch\, and will explore humane solutions that are based in understanding the nature of this behavior. We will learn how correct tools\, techniques\, and newly developed products can positively impact the human-animal bond. This presentation aims to provide the veterinarian with talking points for a welfare-centered communication with owners of cats with scratching problems\, hopefully eliminating the need for the very controversial surgical approach. \nDates and Times\nTuesday\, April 5\, 2022 | 5:30 PM-6:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: March 29\, 2022 \nWednesday\, April 13\, 2022| 12:30 PM-1:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: April 6\, 2022 \nSpeaker\n\nJeannine Berger\, DVM\, DACVB\, DACAW\, CAWA \nDr. Jeannine Berger is one of the few veterinarians that is double-boarded with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists as well as the American College for Animal Welfare. Currently\, Dr. Berger is the Senior Vice President of Rescue and Animal Welfare for the San Francisco SPCA\, where she oversees all aspects of animal care. She first obtained her veterinary degree in 1991 in Zurich\, Switzerland. In 1998\, Dr. Berger moved to California to work at UC Davis\, and in 2019\, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Global Animal Welfare by the World Veterinary Association for her excellent contributions to promoting the welfare of animals. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://cvma.net/learning/cvma-ce-programs-2/online-seminar-alternative-to-declaw-april-5-13-2022/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/21/22 - From Fierce or Fearful to Friendly: A Shaping Program for Dogs\, Cats\, Horses & Beyond - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Fearful and aggressive behaviors are generally regarded as respondent behaviors. That is\, they are considered natural reactions to certain triggers. However\, pet owners find it problematic when their animals engage in excessively fierce or fearful behaviors.\nTo address these behaviors\, trainers often rely on respondent conditioning techniques\, such as desensitization or counterconditioning. The focus of these procedures is on changing the animal’s emotional state to the trigger. Other common procedures try to directly shape a calm response using food or other positive reinforcers. \nAlternatively\, fearful and aggressive behaviors may also be seen as successful operants that are captured and maintained by negative reinforcement. That is\, engaging in the behavior leads to distance from or the removal of something that the animal finds aversive. For example\, a dog learns that when he growls\, strangers go away and leave him alone. This view offers an alternative approach to treatment. \nThis webinar will show how distance can be used as a reinforcer to shape friendly behaviors that replace fearful or aggressive behaviors. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/22/22 - They Just Want to Play: Increasing Welfare\, Reducing Shelter Length of Stay and Increasing Live Outcomes for Dogs with Barrier Frustration - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:For understandable safety reasons\, many shelter and rescue organizations test a dog’s “sociability” with other dogs on a leash or through a fence. Members of PPG’s Shelter & Rescue Committee found that this results in false positives for “dog-aggression\,” which can result in dire consequences for the animal\, including euthanasia or increased length of stay due to adoption barriers. \nWhen 60% of US households have dogs\, a sheltered dog who must be the “only animal in the home” has a much lower chance of being adopted. A great many dogs bark\, lunge\, growl and/or snarl when introduced to other dogs on a leash or through a physical barrier like a kennel door or fence. However\, we have found that a significant number of these dogs have the ability to exhibit appropriate\, pro-social and playful behavior with other dogs when these barriers are removed. \nThis session will focus on introduction methods and behavior modification protocols that are realistic for resource-thin shelter and rescue organizations\, who may not have the luxury of qualified behavior specialists to perform dedicated and time-consuming desensitization and counterconditioning procedures. We believe we can increase adoption rates\, reduce euthanasia\, reduce “kennel stress” and length of stays with the playgroup and behavior modification protocols presented. \nThis was previously aired at Geek Week 2021 \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn about the free PPG resource ThePetRescueResource.com for shelters and rescues\, and see case studies and examples of the treatment of aggressive behavior with playgroups.\nDefine and understand barrier frustration vs. fear\, proximity sensitivity\, compulsive fighting\, etc.\nWhy mislabeling dogs presenting with frustration as “dog-aggressive” is a serious welfare concern.\nHow to treat barrier frustration without the resources for desensitization.\n\nAbout the Presenter: \nK. Holden Svirsky CTC completed a behavior internship with Dr. Jeannine Berger at the San Francisco SPCA in 2015. She is a graduate of the prestigious Academy for Dog Trainers and was awarded its shelter and rescue scholarship in 2014. She has completed Michael Shikashio’s (also presenting at Geek Week) Aggression in Dogs master course and is beginning her certification for treating separation anxiety with Malena DeMartini. \nHolden sits on the PPG Shelter and Rescue Committee\, is an author of ThePetRescueResource.com\, and has had articles published in BARKS from the Guild. She has been a teacher as long as she can remember\, and began her career in behavior work with children\, teaching language and math skills to students with autism\, attention deficit\, attention deficit-hyperactivity\, dyslexia and hyperlexia. \nShe worked full time as a behavior specialist at several shelters from 2012 to 2019. She performed intake at shelters all over the state of California\, taught public classes\, held private consultations\, executed behavior modification on hundreds of shelter animals\, ran playgroups\, counseled adopters\, and trained service dogs for veterans. \nHolden currently teaches specialty group classes for the award-winning Bravo!Pup in Oakland\, California including classes for shy/fearful dogs and inter-dog social behavior. In her private practice\, HoldenK9\, she consults privately for individual clients and shelter/rescue organizations across the United States. \nHolden grew up with working-line gun dogs\, has adopted & fostered many mixed breed shelter dogs\, and currently shares her life with a Yakutian Laika — an ancient sled dog breed — nicknamed ZZ. In her free time\, Holden is a sailor and canicross runner\, hoping to get into bikejoring in 2022. She currently lives on Nantucket Island. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4758488

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/26/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Time - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Right Time has two dimensions: there’s the right time for an animal to come into the shelter (could be right now\, at a scheduled time in the future\, or maybe never!)\, and then there are right times once the animal is admitted (holding periods and length of stay\, for example). Time is our most valuable resource\, and our most interconnected. Whether we’re talking about the hours our shelter is open or the demands on our staff time\, the system we build directly impacts the time an animal spends in our shelter. In this webinar\, Drs. Cynthia (Cindi) Delany and Kate Hurley will outline strategies for streamlining tasks\, reducing length of stay\, capturing lost resources\, and making the most of the resources you have. \nThis webinar is part 2 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters\nKate Hurley DVM\, MPVM\, Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge \nDr. Kate Hurley is the founding director of the Koret Shelter Medicine Program and co-founder of the Million Cat Challenge\, a shelter-based initiative to save the lives of one million more cats in five years. Over 1\,500 shelters more than tripled that goal\, between them saving over three million cats against their own baseline before joining the challenge. \nHurley’s research interests include welfare of confined dogs and cats\, humane and effective strategies to manage community cats\, and infectious disease prevention. She will always love shelter work because it has the potential to improve the lives of so many animals and the people who work so hard to care for them. \nDr. Cindi Delany\, Director of Online Learning\, Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge \nWith an undergraduate degree in Business/Economics from UCLA and a DVM from UC Davis\, Dr. Cindi Delany has practiced emergency medicine\, animal shelter medicine and shelter outreach for more than 20 years. \nHer focus with the Koret Shelter Medicine Program’s animal shelter outreach and industry speaking activities is on programs targeted to improve animal outcomes\, provide environmental enrichment for shelter animals\, explore shelter animal behavior and training\, improve shelter data collection and analysis\, and maximize operational efficiencies in a limited resource environment.  \nDr. Delany is now taking her passion and expertise for sharing information and learnings about maximizing animal shelter success to the next level as the Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge Director of Online Learning at the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. \n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/3/22 - The Forgotten Partner in Responding to Animal Abuse: The Veterinarian - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Shouldn’t the veterinarian be at least as proactive in responding to suspected animal abuse as physicians are in recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse? That’s a question being discussed in veterinary circles as more practitioners receive training in veterinary forensics and learn how to resolve their formidable practice management dilemmas. State laws\, national organizational policies\, and Veterinary Social Workers are prompting a new look at the veterinarian’s role with abused animals. Growing public interest in animal welfare and the FBI’s inclusion of four types of animal cruelty in the NIBRS data system is resulting in veterinarians being asked to articulate exactly what an abused animal’s condition is. This webinar will describe how veterinarians are an invaluable resource for law enforcement and animal care & control officers in not only reporting\, describing\, and testifying about animal abuse\, but also in the newest frontier – “DV and the DVM\,” responses when clients express histories of domestic violence which also affects their animals’ well-being. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenter\nInternationally acclaimed lecturer\, author and educator Phil Arkow is coordinator of the National LINK Coalition – the National Resource Center on The LINK between Animal Abuse and Human Violence – and edits the monthly LINK-Letter. He chairs the Latham Foundation’s Animal Abuse and Family Violence Prevention Project. SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/4/22 - Building a Leadership Culture - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Some organizational gurus contend that culture is the primary job of the CEO and leadership team because all other pillars of a great organization rest upon a healthy culture. A neglected aspect of building an effective and dynamic culture is leadership\, especially at the middle supervisory level of the organization. It is a dangerous fallacy that leadership acumen is only necessary at the top. Building a leadership culture begins by recognizing and communicating the expectation of leadership at every level of the organization\, coupled with the training and support required to develop each person’s leadership skills. \nThis session will explore the leader’s responsibility for culture paired with the need for an ongoing effort to provide leadership training and support. Tracy will explain his approach to leadership development in creating a Leadership Academy at each organization he led. The Leadership Academy is a multi-session approach to building leadership capabilities and capacity based on Tracy’s leadership model for the social sector\, Leadership From The Heart. \nThis live and recorded webinar is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \nThis webinar is part 1 in the 5-part A Great Place to Work series. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/50422-building-a-leadership-culture
