SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/12/22 - Stranger Danger! Advocating for and Advancing Your Human-Reactive Dogs - Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:At Dogs Playing for Life’s Stranger Danger webinar\, hosted by Aimee Sadler\, CEO and Founder of DPFL\, you will learn how to work with dogs that are wary of strangers by building their confidence and helping them develop new skills which will enable them to meet new people (and potential adopters) happily and successfully! Even for the private dog trainer or dog owner\, the skills taught in this webinar will help support your stranger danger dog to expand their comfort level when meeting new people at home! \nThis webinar will demonstrate:\n— DPFL’s Assess and Progress approach: fluttering between assessing and influencing behavior to determine how a dog might respond WITHOUT proper human support to determine what training is necessary for successful placement\n— Comprehensive Tool Selection: determining what tool will best support the dog while keeping the handler and others safe during the learning process\n— Principles vs. Methods: determining what approach will teach the dog as efficiently and effectively as possible\n— Creative Proofing: conducting training with the goal of solid generalization of new skills so that dogs are able to work for multiple handlers with clarity and confidence \nCome learn how to safely and effectively reach this segment of the canine population through in-depth behavior analysis\, dynamic video examples\, and practical approaches designed for anyone who is trying to find solutions for the dogs who need this extra human support. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_oCB1kIf8QkS5Ux1m-q2kXg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/14/22 - What Not to Pair: Changing the Value of Reinforcers & Punishers - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Consequences drive behavior. Therefore\, a deep understanding of the mutability of both reinforcers and punishers is essential for skillful training. What we consider an obvious positive reinforcer can actually transform\, quite quickly\, into a punisher through unintended learning. So we must avoid accidentally “poisoning” positive reinforcers\, the foundation of humane behavioral interventions. Similarly\, preserving the clear meaning of punishers is also necessary for our learners’ welfare. After this webinar\, you will notice many examples in everyday situations of these accidental side-effects of training and will have alternative strategies to prevent them. \nPresenter: Kathy Sdao \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/market/catalog/live-webinars/what-not-to-pair.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/19/22 - Becoming a more wildlife-friendly agency - HSUS
DESCRIPTION:Does your agency’s mission for the humane treatment of animals extend not just to companion animals\, but to wildlife too? Animal control facilities are increasingly tasked with responding to wildlife issues in their community\, but standard operating procedures often stand in the way of achieving humane outcomes for wildlife. For instance\, programs like trap-loan are well-intentioned\, but in reality require unnecessary field response and agency resources\, leave orphans behind\, leave the root of the problem unaddressed\, and inflict suffering on the very animals we work to protect. \nFeaturing the real agency experiences from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA)\, this webinar will provide the roadmap and resources needed to begin transforming the way your agency and community deals with wildlife. The benefits are humane outcomes for wildlife in your community\, a reduced workload for officers in the field\, and a greater awareness in the community about how to solve problems with wildlife. \n(Photo by Emily Halesworth/The HSUS) \nPresenters\n\nSusan Getty\nJennifer Toussaint\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://humanepro.org/trainings/becoming-more-wildlife-friendly-agency

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/19/22 - The Complexities of Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:In domestic violence scenarios\, animals frequently suffer abuse alongside the human victims.  This presentation addresses the complexities that can arise from cases in which a domestic violence victim is also the primary witness to the crime of companion animal abuse; including the challenging cases that appear to rely on one person’s word against the other person’s. The presentation will utilize a hypothetical to illustrate a common scenario involving both domestic violence and cruelty to animals\, and then address specific common issues that arise for the law enforcement\, prosecutors\, and veterinarians involved. \nWebinars in this Series with the ALDF include: \n\nJan 20: Partners in Investigating Animal Crimes\nMarch 24: Responding to Animal Crimes through a Restorative Justice Approach \nJune 2: Tomorrow We Ride! Investigating and Processing Equine Cruelty Cases\nJuly 19: The Complexities of Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse (this webinar)\nNov 10: Courtroom Animal Advocate Programs: Approaching Animals as Quasi-Party Crime Victims\n\nOr\, click here to register and view other Animal Welfare webinars and recordings on the JCH website.  \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/27/22 - Bio Writing to Build Connection - HeARTs Speak
DESCRIPTION:If photos and video open the door\, then the descriptions and bios that we write for pets are what tend to seal the deal. Pet bios take many forms – most often as social media captions/descriptions or writeups on adoption sites. No matter where these will be seen\, they become an important part of getting potential pet owners to take action and investigate adoption. This presentation will delve into how to use bios to help communicate effectively while also catching attention for long-stay or overlooked pets. \nTopics covered include:\n-How to use photo + video to maximize impact\n-The importance of transparency and honesty in communications\n-Strategies and activities to break through bio-writing boredom\n-Avoiding the trap of stereotyping and proactively fighting misinformation\n-How to shine extra light on long-stay pets \nPresenter: Caitlin Quinn\, Director of Operations at HeARTs Speak\nCaitlin is passionate about working with shelters and rescues to reimagine the way they tell their stories and connect with new audiences. She has served in the animal welfare field since 2008 and early on had the honor of working closely with diverse organizations across the U.S. to maximize resources\, redesign policies\, & find life-changing marketing solutions. In 2015 she got her MPA with a concentration in nonprofit management and in 2021 she began teaching shelter marketing for the University of Florida Master’s in Shelter Medicine program. She currently shares her life with a petite brindle pit bull named Sally. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_y9cSCQiGTLuOvHIEVfp4lw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/28/22 - An In-Depth Look at Counter Conditioning - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Feeding a dog in the presence of an eliciting stimulus is often masked as counter conditioning him. When it doesn´t work we label the process as ineffective or assume it’s not the best choice for that particular dog or situation. But the only times counter conditioning doesn’t work is if it’s not counter conditioning\, if it’s not performed correctly\, or if there is some physiological or neurological process inhibiting learning. \nThere are pillars that support a counter conditioning procedure. Novelty\, salience\, contingency\, contiguity and timing are the main ones. Similarly\, there are factors – mainly human error – that hinder the process. In this webinar we will explore those pillars and discuss human errors that make counter conditioning “ineffective”. \nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT 1.5\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA 1.5 \nInstructor: Alexandra Santos \nLearning Objectives \n– Understand the importance and impact of novelty.\n– What is more important? Contiguity\, contingency\, or both?\n– Learn how pre-exposure to the US can make it less effective.\n– Increase US salience while decreasing trigger salience.\n– Learn about trace conditioning\, simultaneous conditioning\, short and long-delay conditioning and when to use them.\n– The role of backward conditioning.\n– Avoid common errors during a counter conditioning procedure.\n– Some practical examples. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4644572

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/4/22 - Harmonious Walks: Redefining Loose-Leash Walking - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Dogs who pull like a tank; dogs who play tug with the leash. Sound familiar? Ask any trainer why clients reach out to them for help\, and somewhere in the top three reasons you’ll find “walking on-leash”. It’s such a common problem\, and the simplest solution is actually the most unexpected one. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll cover how to achieve harmonious walks. Attendees will learn how to attain that elusive “loose-leash walking” behaviour in the most enjoyable way. We’ll move away from focusing on the traditional heeling behaviour\, and towards recognizing and meeting dogs’ needs through foundation skills and on-leash games that anyone can do. \n“Harmonious walks” means everyone wins. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/5/22 - AlignCare: Program for Pet Health Equity - CalAnimals
DESCRIPTION:All members of the family deserve access to healthcare\, including the nonhuman members (pets). Health equity means that all family members have the potential to get the care they need. When they don’t receive needed care\, health disparities result. Unfortunately\, more than 1 out of 4 families do not have access to veterinary care. Not having veterinary care threatens the wellbeing of the whole family. \nThe AlignCare system was created to improve access to veterinary care for families currently underserved. It is a community-based collaboration where resources and activities are aligned\, including funds to subsidize the veterinary care for qualified families.  This presentation will describe the societal problem and how AlignCare addresses it. Also\, participants will learn what is required to bring AlignCare to their community. \nSpeaker: Dr. Michael Blackwell\, DVM\, MPH – University of Tennessee\, Knoxville \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_em05H86CQ02KZ-3RaEnjbg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/9/22 - Building a Positive Workplace Culture—Why It Matters and How to Do It - HASS
DESCRIPTION:The animal welfare industry is understaffed and facing worker turnover\, like employers around the country. The effects are dire: animal shelter workers are burned out\, and animals’ lives are at risk. But in the face of these challenges\, Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) in Florida has zero vacant positions\, and hasn’t had an opening in an entry level position in over 14 months. \nPCAS Assistant Director Spencer Conover attributes this success to a positive workplace culture\, built through inspiration\, leadership\, recognition\, equal pay\, and training. In this webinar\,  Conover will discuss how PCAS created and sustains its positive workplace culture\, and how you can easily adapt these methods to your workplace to help better retain team members and build a positive workplace culture of your own. \nJoin us Tuesday\, August 9 at 5pm CT for an exciting webinar\, Building a Positive Workplace Culture – Why It Matters and How to Do It\, hosted by Spencer Conover\, Assistant Director of Pasco County Animal Services. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/6516583441652/WN_WKolGPggRZm_5nQ_55S5KA
