SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/9/23 - Law Enforcement and Animal Control Joint Responses - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:There is a lot of overlap between the roles of police officers and Sheriff’s deputies\, who are expected to be masters in all things related to public safety and law enforcement\, and animal control and humane officers\, who are expected to be masters in all things animal-related. That overlap is increasing as pets become our children. We share two common goals: safety for all—people and animals alike; and successful prosecution of those who endanger that safety. We need to reduce our insular thinking and include each other in our respective viewpoints\, priorities and methods. This webinar will help bridge the gap and start a conversation between these two branches of law enforcement so we can better support each other\, ensure more successful operations on both sides\, help prosecutors do their job\, and reduce everyone’s workload. \nThis session will cover: \n\nRoles of police/deputies in animal-related incidents\nRoles of animal control/humane officers in law enforcement\nSources of authority of police/deputies and of animal control/humane officers\, and how they differ\nRecognizing the gaps in training/expertise in both fields\nCommon goals and ways to achieve them\nBenefits of working together\n\nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. \nPresenter:\nHarold Holmes has been the Executive Assistant for The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control since 2016. Prior\, he was a Deputy Director for the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and before that retired as a Chief of Police in northern California. \nHarold is a former U.S. Marine who was recalled to active duty for the Gulf War. \nA hostage negotiator and police canine handler of an award-winning patrol dog at Redlands P.D.\, when he retired from police work\, he began a new career as an animal control officer. While at San Diego County Animal Services\, he developed the Responsible Pet Ownership Program for animal-law violators\, which won an award from the California State Association of Counties. He has experience drafting and shepherding legislation that became law at both the State and local level. \nManaging San Diego County’s Dangerous Dog Task Force for three years inspired him to attend law school. Harold graduated as the Valedictorian from Western Sierra Law School and was admitted to the Bar in June 2013. He is also a hearing officer\, a trained mediator and teaches a variety of legal and law-enforcement related topics. \nHe has completed management and executive level trainings\, including the County of Los Angeles/USC Executive Leadership Development Program. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/law-enforcement-and-animal-control-joint-responses/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/16/23 - Fight/Flight But What About The Forgotten Fawn? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:“Fawning” in dogs is a stress response often utilised when the threat is inescapable or unpredictable. Dogs in these situations will try to appease others to avoid conflict. This can involve tail tucking\, crouching\, and other appeasement behaviours\, which may be misinterpreted as calmness or obedience. While fawning is less well-known than fighting or fleeing\, it’s still a common response to stress in dogs and can have serious consequences for their mental and emotional health\, particularly. For those dogs that have been impacted by trauma. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll explore what fawning is\, why it happens\, and how it can impact our dogs’ lives. We’ll discuss how fawning can develop as a survival strategy in response to abusive or neglectful situations\, and why it can be difficult to recognize and address as dog owners. We’ll also explore how fawning can contribute to anxiety\, fear\, and behavioral issues in dogs\, and discuss strategies to build coping skills to aid rehabilitation. By the end of this webinar\, you’ll have a better understanding of the fight/flight/fawn response in dogs\, and be better equipped to identify and manage fawning behaviors. Whether you’re a dog owner\, a trainer\, or simply interested in learning more about the psychology of stress in dogs\, this webinar is for you. Join us to explore this important topic and learn how to help your dog build resilience in the face of life’s challenges. \nPresenter: Danielle Beck \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT \, KPA \, & IAABC Pending \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/16/23 - Pressure On Pressure Off: The Hidden World of Negative Reinforcement - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years I taught a senior level Learning & Behavior college course. The topic that consistently led to the most confusion was negative reinforcement (-R). While many learning theories and ideas seemed logical and sensible to most students\, negative reinforcement (as both a term and a concept) was often a sticking point. I see that same confusion for many animal trainers. That’s a shame\, because negative reinforcement is a very powerful and effective way to change behavior. Unfortunately\, it also has the possibility of being misused in damaging and unethical ways. \nI believe that negative reinforcement is one of the most misunderstood concepts in operant conditioning because the term itself seems like an oxymoron. We typically think of the definition of negative as something bad. In the world of learning theory\, negative actually means “to remove or take away something”. If you keep this in mind everything that follows begins to make more sense! We also need to consider the actual meaning of the term reinforcement when we discuss learning. Reinforcement is a consequence that is meant to increase a behavior. So negative reinforcement is something that is removed or taken away in order to increase behavior. Once the language and definitions are properly sorted out then we can move on to the good stuff; how to use it to change behavior. \nThis webinar will cover what negative reinforcement is and how it works\, the related concepts of pressure\, release\, & relief\, human & animal examples in the real world\, the possible fallout & ethical issues associated with -R\, and several basic training protocols. So get your training nerd hat on and come geek out with me about negative reinforcement! \nInstructor: Deb Jones\, PhD \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/18/23 - Functional Analyses and Reinforcement-Based Treatments for Mouthing in Dogs - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:The most common cause of companion dog relinquishment and non-medical euthanasia is problem behavior. Many animal behavior professionals utilize descriptive assessments\, functional assessments\, or medical assessments to try and identify the functions of problem behavior in order to target those functions in behavior modification protocols. However\, studies have demonstrated differences in accuracy and efficiency between functional assessments and functional analyses. \nMouthing is a relatively common problem behavior observed in pet dogs\, and many owners seek to reduce the frequency of the behavior. However\, the functions of dog mouthing are unknown; therefore\, behavior interventions are based on descriptively-informed behavioral functions. As a result\, current interventions may lack efficacy or even worsen the behavior. \nAlthough the functional analysis is the gold standard for identifying human behavioral functions and developing function-based interventions\, its use in the animal behavior field is still relatively rare. This study assessed the validity of the functional analysis for mouthing in companion dogs and tested function-based interventions informed by the results. Participants included three dogs and their owners participating in a functional analysis and intervention assessment. Data indicate that function-based interventions informed by functional analysis results were efficacious for reducing problem mouthing. \nDiscussion in this session will include how the functional analysis was set up\, behavior was measured\, data were analyzed\, and results were integrated into interventions. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify the importance and definition of an operant behavioral function (what drives a particular operant behavior).\nBe able to describe the relative differences between functional assessments and functional analyses\, in addition to understanding the differences in outcomes and efficiency.\nUnderstand the relative frequency and possible functions of dog mouthing behavior.\nHave a very general understanding of the setup of a functional analysis protocol and interpretation of functional analysis results in the context of dog mouthing behavior.\n\nPresenter: Dr. Mindy Waite \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, IAABC Pending \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! You look around and you see why….chicken bones on the ground\, squirrels playing near the path or that ever-so-tempting pile of horse poop! \nA solid “Leave-it” cue is cool but an automatic leave-it is way better! \nThis webinar is all about just that. Starting with no cue at all\, Denise will walk you through the steps of developing a strong leave-it! First you’ll teach a traditional cue and next you’ll work towards an automatic response to attractive options in the environment. How cool is that?! \nAlong for the ride is a leave-it for the food refusal exercise found in a variety of dog sports. \nJoin Denise and find your walks become a lot more relaxing as your dog takes responsibility for leaving stuff where it belongs – in the environment! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar – 3/25/23 – For Dog’s sake\, can you stop that? Canine-Friendly Body Language Improvements for Humans – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Dogs are resilient and oh-so-forgiving! These qualities make them endearing as companions\, along with their ability to love unconditionally. So\, why do some dogs struggle to understand us when we are offering affection or when we want to help them\, not harm them? In this session we will focus on the HUMAN handling that contributes to unwanted behavior\, even “aggression.” Get ready to rethink your approach as DPFL Founder and CEO\, Aimee Sadler\, reveals the common widely accepted and taught handling errors that set dogs up for failure. Through extensive video examples\, she will demonstrate alternative handling techniques that help dogs to trust and thrive! \nLearning objectives:\n– Examples of handling that causes negative behavior compared to handling that promotes desired behavior\n– Demonstration of handling that induces trust and learning with dogs that are too afraid to respond initially to food rewards or affection\n– Comprehensive discussion around the correct use of pressure and release and why this is a critical skill for shelter canine handlers to master in order to save more dogs \nThis is a 2-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session of approximately 30 minutes. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nThis webinar holds 500 attendees\, so register ahead of time and show up on time the day of the webinar (we’ll open it up 15 minutes early) to be sure to get a spot! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OpMzJhaNT_Cwsd-1D-Gi1Q

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/29/23 - Predation Substitute Training - A Holistic Training Program To Stop Dogs From Chasing! - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Conventional training protocols stifle the dog’s natural predatory behaviors through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against the dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt! \nPredation is an inner need that makes our dogs happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting a lid on a boiling pot. Eventually\, that pressure needs to escape\, and without a proper outlet\, it’s probably going to get messy. \nPredation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program\, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for our dog’s natural drive. \nInstead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun\, this training system will help dogs and their guardians to grow as a team and go hunting together! \nIn this presentation Simone is going to discuss: \n\nWhat is predation?\nWhy do our dogs love to hunt?\nWhy is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?\nHow and why does Predation Substitute Training work?\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, KPA 1\, PMCT 1\, & IAABC Pending \nRegistered for the live event\, get busy and cannot make it! \nNo worries you will automatically receive a recording! \nAbout the Instructor \nSimone Mueller\, MA is a certified dog trainer and dog behaviour consultant (ATN) from Germany. \nSimone specialises in force-free anti-predation training and is the author of the three books of the Predation Substitute Training series “Hunting Together”\, “Rocket Recall” and “Don’t Eat That”. \nSimone is proud to be an Associate Trainer at the Scotland-based Lothlorien Dog Training Club (AT-LDTC) and a member of The Initiative of Force-Free Dog Training\, the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and the Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE). \nFollow Simone’s work on Facebook and Instagram: #predationsubstitutetraining. SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/11/23 - Crisis Sheltering for Pets: Keeping People and Pets Together - HASS
DESCRIPTION:There are times when someone can’t take care of their pet on a temporary basis\, because of a medical emergency\, loss of housing\, or another short-term crisis. The traditional sheltering response is to permanently separate the pet from their owner\, but more and more organizations are providing crisis sheltering instead—boarding the pet at the shelter\, or placing them in a foster home\, for a limited amount of time. How does crisis sheltering work\, and how can you get started? We’ve gathered experts from multiple crisis sheltering organizations and programs for a live panel discussion that will leave you inspired. \nJoin us in conversation with Shoshana Mostoller\, Community Engagement Manager for Chesapeake Humane Society; Jodi Polanski\, Founder and Executive Director of Lost Our Home Pet Rescue; Kristina Pulsipher\, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering; Andy Bond\, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of BestyBnB\, and our moderator Vincent Medley\, Director of Human Animal Support Services. We’ll discuss what crisis sheltering looks like in each of their organizations\, challenges they’ve overcome\, and their best tips for getting started. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/6016782060176/WN_qFQtd-iCTnadivtQEMA84w

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/13/23 - Maddie's Insights: Becoming a Secure Base: Using science to improve human-animal bonds and welfare - Maddie's Fund

D.\, CAAB\, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University\, where she also runs the Human-Animal Interactions Lab. \nMany people feel that they have shared a strong bond with a do\, and there is growing scientific evidence that these dogs also form strong bonds with their humans. However\, science also tells us that not all bonds are created equal. The kind and quality of attachment relationship shared can influence a dog’s behavior and welfare outcomes. In this talk\, Dr. Monique Udell will provide an overview of attachment theory\, including what it means to be a Secure Base\, and how this knowledge can be applied to better understand and improve dog-human relationships and the relationships shared between humans and other animals. \n  \nAbout the presenter: \nMonique Udell\, Ph. D.\, CAAB \nDr. Monique Udell is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist and an Associate Professor of Animal Sciences at Oregon State University\, where she also runs the Human-Animal Interactions Lab. Much of her work focuses on the development of human-animal bonds and the impact that these bonds can have on the behavior and success of both species. She also studies the social behavior and cognition of a variety of species including cats\, dogs\, wolves\, and sheep\, with a special interest in the influence of domestication and lifetime experience on behavioral development\, welfare and learning. In addition\, Dr. Udell is the co-director of an animal-assisted intervention program dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with and without developmental disabilities and their family dogs and cats.
