SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/14/23 - Improving Canine Quality of Life through Efficient\, Low-Cost Dental Care - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:What to do about canine dental health is one of the hottest topics in accessible veterinary care today. While everyone agrees that all dogs would benefit from regular dental procedures\, the cost of dental care (including digital dental radiography) is well beyond the reach of many pet owners. Many shelter and community clinics provide some dental care to patients but often do so with guilt and conflict about not being able to provide the extensive care needed (or even worry about practicing below the perceived standard of care). \nIn this webinar\, we will present results from an ASPCA-funded study that investigated the impact of dental cleaning on the quality of life of canine patients. Additionally\, we investigated how an empirical treatment plan (pulling any obvious loose or severely diseased teeth) compared to recommendations made from a blinded radiograph review. Finally\, we documented the incidence of retained roots for dogs who had extractions and followed these dogs forward in time for 6 months. This project aimed to answer the question of whether or not providing some care was better than providing no care for patients with end-stage canine dental disease. As many dogs ideally need dental procedures as often as every year\, it is essential to come up with an affordable approach. \nTakeaways \n\nUnderstand current controversies around canine dental care.\nBe able to describe strategies to make dentistry procedures more efficient.\nDiscuss improving communication around dental care using spectrum of care approaches.\n\nCredits\nThis program has been RACE approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/improving-canine-quality-life-through-efficient-low-cost-dental-care

Dr. Nugent will go over the rationale for the scale\, what it is intended to measure\, how it was developed\, how scores on the scale should be interpreted and how it should be scored and used. He will also discuss current research on the scale and the implications of the results in both veterinary research and practice. \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcasts \nConnect with the guest speaker & ask questions here on Maddie’s Pet Forum: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsFamilyBondednessScale \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association and has been submitted for approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval. \nAbout the Presenter: Dr. Bill Nugent is a Professor at the College of Social Work\, The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He has been with the College of Social Work for over 30 years. He is former Director of the Ph.D. Program\, and former Associate Dean for Research. His areas of specialization include measurement and quantitative methods. He has also been conducting research on the links between violent political rhetoric and violence\, including mass shootings and police shootings of civilians. SUMMARY:Webinar – 1/11/24 – For Dog’s Sake\, Can You Stop That? Canine-Friendly Body Language Improvements for Humans – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Dogs are resilient and oh-so-forgiving! These qualities make them endearing as companions\, along with their ability to love unconditionally. So\, why do some dogs struggle to understand us when we are offering affection or when we want to help them\, not harm them? In this session\, we will focus on the HUMAN handling that contributes to unwanted behavior\, even “aggression”. Get ready to rethink your approach as we reveal the common and widely accepted and taught handling errors that set dogs up for failure. Through extensive video examples\, we will demonstrate alternative handling techniques that help dogs to trust and thrive! \n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will demonstrate: \n– Examples of handling that causes negative behavior compared to handling that promotes desired behavior \n– Demonstration of handling that induces trust and learning with dogs that are too afraid to respond initially to food rewards or affection \n– Comprehensive discussion around the correct use of pressure and release and why this is a critical skill for shelter canine handlers to master to save more dogs \nThis is a 2-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled at EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://dogsplayingforlife.com/webinars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/11/24 - Maddie's Insights: Foster Care and the Human-Animal Bond - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:It is commonplace among those who provide foster care for animals to have a recurring conversation with those who do not. Upon hearing that one is an animal foster parent a frequent response is\, “Oh\, I could never do that. I would not be able to give the animal up.” But this is precisely what those caring for animal fosters are called to do. The ability of animal shelters and rescues to provide critical care through foster homes depends on volunteers who willingly and temporarily take animals into their homes and lives. Studies of foster volunteers has indicated that they find taking care of animals with medical\, and particularly behavioral\, issue to be stressful. And\, volunteers that do not feel that their shelter is providing them sufficient emotional support are more likely to think about quitting. Given these two realities it becomes important for shelter staff to understand the emotional aspects of providing foster care and to identify ways to better support volunteers so that they are satisfied and more likely to continue to provide this service. \nThe presentation addresses these issues with the following learning objectives: \n\nWhat is the nature of attachment (human-animal bond) between volunteers and their foster animals?\nWhat emotions do volunteers experience when their fosters leave their care?\nWhat coping and resilience strategies appear to reduce the stress of providing foster care?\nHow can animal shelters help foster volunteers cope with the stress inherent to fostering?\n\nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been submitted for approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval. \nIf you have questions you’d like our presenter to answer\, submit your questions or comments on this discussion thread: https://forum.maddiesfund.org/discussion/webcast-on-january-11-2024-maddies-insights-foster-care-and-the-human-animal-bond \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Laura Reese is a professor in the School of Planning\, Design\, and Construction at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on issues of animal welfare policy and shelter management. She wrote the book\, Strategies for Successful Animal Shelters\, and has published numerous articles on local animal ordinances\, dog bite risks\, animal cruelty\, compassion fatigue\, animal foster programs\, and animal shelter volunteer satisfaction. She is the president of Professional Animal Welfare Services which provides consulting services to animal shelters and rescues and founded The Un-Shelter a foster-based rescue in Michigan. Dr. Reese also volunteers in and provides foster care for local animal shelters in the Charleston\, SC area. \nWEBSITE LINK: http://maddies.fund/MIwebcasts

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/24/24 - Grief & Loss in Veterinary Medicine - BlackDVM Network
DESCRIPTION:Euthanasia is an experience\, not a procedure or event. The experience of the loss of an animal companion\, no matter how dignified\, well-planned\, and peaceful\, initiates a physiological\, cognitive\, and emotional process which is unique to the individual. This program explores the experience of loss not only for the human “pet parent\,” but also for the other animals who shared in the life of the deceased. Humans and animals have parallel emotional circuitry built into the limbic system of the brain. There is much about the emotional experience of loss that we have in common with our animal companions. Listeners will be challenged to imagine foreign perspectives and re-think the human-animal bond\, anthropomorphism\, and mortality itself. \nThis webinar will equip you with skills to: \n\nChallenge assumptions about patients\, clients\, and the end of life\nBecome comfortable allowing animals to show their emotional needs\nEngage better with clients\, patients\, and colleagues\n\nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.blackdvmnetwork.com/event-details/grief-loss-in-veterinary-medicine

SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/25/24 - In Whose Best Interest? with Karen Deeds - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will not outline any training or behavior modification. What it will do is present your options for dogs with serious behavior problems and give you a framework about how to make an educated decision regarding those options. Is management alone an appropriate option? Or is your problem too severe to chance management failure? Is the problem one that can be responsibly transferred to another owner and/or another environment successfully? The same variables to help determine what option is best for you\, will also be critical in determining if training and behavior modification are a viable option as well as how successful that option may be. The agonizing decision to discuss behavioral euthanasia with your veterinarian can also be analyzed logically by using these same variables. This can be a difficult topic. But it is important to keep in mind\, in whose best interest we decide. \nWhether you are part of a rescue group\, shelter staff\, or volunteer\, dedicated dog owner\, professional trainer or behavior consultant\, or a veterinarian working with a client\, this webinar will help to make an appropriate decision regarding a dog in your care. \nJoin Karen Deeds as she takes you through over 20 variables about the dog\, the environment\, and the people involved to help you determine what option is best for a dog with serious behavior issues. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/8/24 - Maddie's Insights: The Influence of Field Trip and Sleepover Programs on Shelter Dog Welfare - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Animal shelters can be stressful for dogs\, but human interaction\, such as foster caregiving\, can improve their experience. In this webcast\, Dr. Gunter will discuss multiple studies she and her team have carried out as part of the Arizona State University/Virginia Tech Maddie’s Nationwide Fostering Study in which we studied the effects of field trip and sleepover programs on the welfare of dogs living in shelters. Their initial studies investigated the physiological impacts of these programs\, and their published study examined how field trips and sleepovers influenced dogs’ likelihood of adoption and length of stay. They also explored factors related to the performance of these programs. Overall\, their findings support the implementation of these programs. Learn how you can use short-term fostering programs to improve the welfare of dogs in your shelter as they await adoption. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe potential stressors that make shelters stressful for dogs\nRelate how human social interaction can improve the welfare of dogs in the shelter\nExtrapolate the different activities dogs likely engage in during field trips and sleepovers\nDiscuss the research findings about field trips and sleepovers\nDifferentiate how field trips and sleepovers impact dogs’ proximate and distal welfare\n\nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been submitted for approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval. \nRegister once for all Maddie’s Insights webcasts here: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcasts \nAfter the webcast\, continue the conversation on this thread in Maddie’s Pet Forum: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsFosterCareImpact \nAbout the presenter:\nDr. Lisa Gunter\, Assistant Professor of Animal Behavior and Welfare at Virginia Tech\n \n \nBefore beginning her graduate studies\, Dr. Lisa Gunter worked for nearly a decade with dogs in animal shelters and with pet dogs and their owners. The goal of Lisa’s research is to better the lives of companion animals and their owners. To this aim\, she has investigated the breed labeling of shelter dogs\, their breed heritage\, shelter housing and social interactions\, temporary and long-term fostering\, short-term outings\, behavioral indicators of welfare\, post adoption interventions focused on owner retention – and more recently\, fostering during the pandemic and safety net programs to help keep people and their pets together. Under the mentorship of Clive Wynne\, Lisa earned her Master’s in 2015\, and her PhD in 2018 as a graduate student in the behavioral neuroscience and comparative psychology program at Arizona State University. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcasts

This presentation will additionally walk through Fulton County\, Georgia’s Canine Cellmates program as a case study. The program prevents men who have been charged or convicted of crimes from experiencing the myriad traumatic life disruptions and setbacks incarceration causes because courts can offer participation in Canine Cellmates as a diversion program or incarceration alternative. Successful completion of Canine Cellmates also allows participants the ability to have charges dismissed or eligible convictions expunged. \nFor this reason\, the program not only saves Fulton County financial resources associated with court and incarceration costs\, but it also saves the county financial resources successful participants might otherwise need\, had they not learned the foundational skills Canine Cellmates provides. Furthermore\, the program’s human graduates experience family restoration\, increased employability\, and low recidivism rates. These graduates become model citizens for teaching compassion to other humans and animals\, which promotes the vitality of a strong community within a One Health-oriented ecosystem. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/29/24 - Beyond the Save Rate: Integrating People into the Sheltering Equation - HASS
DESCRIPTION:Having a 90% or higher save rate has become the gold standard for measuring the success or failure of an animal shelter or rescue\, and it will continue to be an important metric. The problem is that the save rate focuses only on a singular point in a complex societal issue. The more the animal welfare industry learns about people and pets\, the more we realize that the trouble is less about the pets in the shelter and more about the “people problems” that put them there to begin with. Dr. Ellen Jefferson\, President and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!\, covered this topic in her recent Psychology Today article. Now\, she’s joining us alongside Cole Wakefield\, Executive Director of The Good Shepherd Humane Society\, to discuss in a live webinar. Read the article\, bring your questions\, and join us to participate in what is sure to be a lively discussion. Vincent Medley\, Maddie’s® Director of Human Animal Support Services\, will moderate. \nWEBSITE LINK: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/7816739797796/WN_BbAxiIkKT5a0npxBae_Aaw#/registration
