SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/15/21 - MAC 2021 Webinar Series: Compassion Fatigue in Animal Welfare - Massachusetts Animal Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Overview\nFrom Happy and Fulfilled to Sad and Angry:  How Helping Animals Can Make Your Heart Hurt \nThe nature of animal work means that we are susceptible to compassion fatigue.  This includes the moral stress that is an unavoidable part of this work.  And trauma – both personal and occupational – can play a role in how we react to stressful situations.  It helps to understand what compassion fatigue is and how it can creep into our daily work. \nWe will talk about: \n\nthe individual and his/her ability to recognize compassion fatigue and learn to mitigate or heal from it\, and\nthe systemic\, organizational stressors that affect our work and how the two can feed off of one another – or work toward creating a healthier environment.\n\nEach attendee should come out of this presentation with a better understanding of his/herself and his/her role at the shelter and in the larger animal welfare community. Specific tools will be provided for creating a plan for working toward balance and emotional health in a very difficult field.  There will be a 15-minute Q&A discussion at the end. \nNOTE:  If you would like to assess your current level of compassion fatigue beforehand you can access the Professional Quality of Life Scale’s Compassion Fatigue Self Test at http://proqol.org/ProQol_Test.html.  On the right side click on “The ProQOL 5 Self-Score (English)” and it will be scored for you.  If you speak another language there are accommodations for you\, too. \nSpeaker Information\nAnne Lindsay is the founder of MAC\, which was founded in 2000.  She was president of a canine rescue organization and learned firsthand about frontline animal welfare issues.  After 12 years at a large shelter\, she gained valuable experience behind the scenes as a part of the shelter’s management team. \nIn 2010 Anne earned her Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University and has consulted with states\, smaller communities\, and individual shelters\, helping them to form coalitions and work on board development.  She has also focused on helping organizations and individuals to address the very real issue of “compassion fatigue.” \nAnne is a past president of the board of the New England Federation of Humane Societies and is a board member of the State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team (SMART).  She received various awards from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association\, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Animal Control Officers Association of Massachusetts. \nAnne and her very patient and tolerant veterinarian husband David share their lives with 2 dogs\, 3 cats and 6 hens. \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dmv5lydab&oeidk=a07ehgskstu88fb2ea0%20

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/20/21 - An Introduction to Fear-based Behaviors Across Species: Dogs\, Horses\, Cats\, Birds - Training Matters (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:With Debbie Jacobs\, CPDT-KA\, RBT; Michelle Martiya\, equine trainer; Katenna Jones\, ScM\, ACAAB\,CCBC\, CDBC\, CPDT-KA; Emily Strong\, CDBC\, CPDT-KA\, SBA. \nFebruary 20\, 2021\, noon to 3 p.m. eastern time \nThe science of how animals learn and overcome fear-based behavior challenges such as fear of people\, discomfort with being handled\, fear of other animals\, terror in particular environments\, is the same across species. What is not the same is how trainers work with different species because of the animals’ particular needs and safety considerations for the humans working with them. \nWe have assembled an expert group to talk about how they work with scared animals in a species with which they specialize. In this online seminar\, Debbie Jacobs will talk about dogs\, Michelle Martiya about horses\, Katenna Jones about cats\, and Emily Strong about birds. These ladies will discuss the behavioral profile of the fearful animals they often see\, that is the behaviors they exhibit and their typical history. The presenters will then talk about how they work through specific behavior challenges\, highlighting what may be different about working through the situation with a dog\, horse\, cat or bird in terms of management\, safety\, reinforcement delivery\, and other aspects of the training process. \nThe intent is to take a comparative approach. What is the same and what is different about working with traumatized animals of these different species\, as well as to highlight the particular considerations with each species. In addition to giving presentations\, the presenters will be available for a Q&A session afterwards. This promises to be a very interesting and educational event with some of the best trainers in the business\, and certainly some of the best at handling fear-based behavior including aggression and reactivity. \nCEUs are available. Three from IAABC; 2.5 from CCPCT for trainers and .5 for behavior consultants. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  http://mattersdogtraining.com/events/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/25/21 - Your Aging Dog Wants To Do More Than You Think—And Will Thrive For It! with Lori Stevens - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will provide practical information for everyone living with older dogs. You will no longer be a passive bystander watching your dog age. You will be introduced to how to keep aging dogs engaged with you and the environment. We’ll cover how to help them be more active and functional. You’ll learn what you can do to support your dog’s aging process and help them regain strength and confidence. This information is empowering in an area where we often feel helpless. Applying these techniques will make life easier for your aging dog. It will also make caring for them easier\, more joyful\, and enriching for both of you. \nAs dogs age\, they slow down just as we do. They typically lose hind-end strength and proprioception. Mental and sensory functioning often decline as well. As the aging process continues\, many dogs lose the ability to function in life’s daily activities\, e.g. going up and down stairs. This loss can be due to a variety of factors\, which we will cover some of. One example is muscle weakness. Weak muscles can be strengthened by doing simple exercises resulting in older dogs being able to function again. This webinar will cover exercises as well as other useful tools and techniques specifically for supporting older dogs. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/market/catalog/live-webinars/live-webinars-english-c-34/your-aging-dog.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 2/25/21 - Introduction to RAT (Relationship Assessment Tool) - Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Take one person\, add one dog\, and you get a third entity: the relationship between the person and the dog. Successful and humane training needs to include the relationship as the dynamic ground on which skills\, behavior changes and improvements can take root. Join live or watch the recording at your convenience for an introduction to RAT™: Relationship Assessment Tool. Developed by Suzanne Clothier\, RAT™ provides a new perspective on understanding of the dog/human relationship. \nRAT™ can be used to: \n\nAssess what is contributing to behavior\, training and/or performance challenges\nIdentifying the strengths & weaknesses of the relationship\nAssess suitability for a purpose\, such as therapy dog team\, AAI/AAT\nAssess for best match adoptions or placements o Identify handler skills (ideal for training staff & volunteers)\nTrack changes and improvements over time\n\nIn each relationship\, the handler brings his/her habits\, personalities\, needs and style to interact with the dog\, who also brings his/her own personality\, patterns of response\, needs and style. With an emphasis on patterns of behaviors found on both ends of the leash\, RAT is a powerful tool for assessing the dynamics of the dog/human relationship. \nFor those who work with training issues and behavior problems\, RAT™ clearly identifies the strengths and weaknesses of any dog/handler team. Practical and effective\, RAT™leads to Training Triage & Plan for a customized approach that addresses & supports the specific needs of that dog/handler relationship. \nPLEASE NOTE: – All webinars will be recorded and a link will be sent to you 48 hours after the completion of the webinar for you to access the recording. – If you need CEUs for IAABC or PPAB\, instructions on how to get them will be given during the webinar. – If this is your first time using GoToWebinar\, they offer a test webinar so you can trouble shoot ahead of time. SUMMARY:Webinar - 1/28/21 - Genetics of Dog Aggression - Dr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:What do (and don’t) we know about how genetics affects canine aggression? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica Hekman will take a deep dive into her own area of research – how genetics affects personality in dogs. How much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? In this webinar\, Jessica will particularly address examples from human literature about traits that are similar to reactivity and aggression in dogs\, why they are so hard to understand from a genetics viewpoint\, and what the future holds for us. \nAs always\, there will be something for everyone\, so come listen and ask questions\, whether you are just starting to wrap your head around genetics or whether you’re a confirmed science geek! \n  \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout The Presenter\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\n \n\nJessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs. SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/2/21 - When the Evidence Wags Its Tail - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:There comes a time in every investigator’s career that cats and dogs are part of a case\, whether centrally\, as seen in situations of animal cruelty\, or peripherally\, as often seen in domestic violence calls. In many of these situations\, you may need to document the animals’ condition without the assistance of a veterinarian or experienced humane law enforcement officer. Do you know what you are looking for\, and what to put on the record? This webinar will take you through the basic logistics of documenting an animal’s condition- nose to tail- including physical and behavioral characteristics\, how to make it part of the record so it holds up in court\, and preserving your case when the evidence is alive. \nOr click here to view and register for other upcoming NACA  webinars on the JCH Platform. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nNina Stively is the Director of Loudoun County Animal Services in northern Virginia\, an independent government agency that includes the County animal shelter and a team of sworn humane law enforcement officers. Nina is a Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator\, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator\, and an Animal Control Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She still has a seventeen-year-old cat named Mercury from her very first TNR project\, and shares her home with some very supportive humans\, five chickens\, two cats\, three dogs and an assortment of foster animals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/when-the-evidence-wags-its-tail/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/3/21 - Successful Animal Management Program in Regional Australia: Lessons learned from a multi–agency approach - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Building a successful animal management program from the ground up is challenging at the best of times but throw in the mix a low socio-economic area\, poor trust in AMOs\, limited resources\, and a long history of high enforcement. Understanding the needs of a community\, difficulties in an area as well as taking a multi-agency approach to a pilot animal management program has lead to amazing success for a regional Local Government in Australia. Gaining the trust of the community became the key to creating a successful working relationship. \nCome join Tina Martin and Ann-Marie Plasto to find out about how you could build a holistic approach to animal management programs in low socio-areas with great results. \n  \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nSummary of current animal management pilot program in a regional Australian town.\nChallenges faced and how they were overcome within the program.\nWhy a multi-agency approach to an animal management program leads to successful outcomes for everyone involved\n\n  \n\n \nThe Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) is the national peak body representing Local Government Animal Management Officers. The AIAM Committee consists of a wide range of professionals engaged in the various aspects of animal management. \nAIAM seeks to support those engaged in the business of animal management\, and the function itself\, by providing training and information\, opportunities for networking and collaboration\, and by encouraging the use of best practice policy and practices. AIAM promotes consistency of legislation\, consultation in the creation of legislation and workplace processes\, and healthy relationships with external stakeholders and the community. AIAM supports cross-sector collaboration and co-design of projects and initiatives. \n  \n\n\n  \nAbout the Presenters: \n\n\nAnn-Marie Plasto joined Cairns Regional Council in 2015 in the small outdated pound facility\, but this never stopped her dreaming of making changes from the moment she stepped into the kennels. Making lead officer within 18months she uses her tertiary studies and skills gained from other facilities in Queensland\, mixed in with some sheer determination to improve the facility for the sake of the animals and the community. Working in other larger shelters\, boarding facilities\, and wildlife parks around the region Ann-Marie has gained a deep understanding of the needs of the community. Although she is still young in her Council career every day is a learning curve working in Local Govt and there is no one better to take up the challenge in this regional Queensland town. \nTina Martin has had over 25 years’ experience in the animal welfare and animal management field. Starting off her career with RSPCA\, she worked in a range of positions from vet nursing to shelter manager all up and down the Queensland Coast in Australia. This diversity of positions and locations for 14 years gave Tina an immense understanding of animal management issues faced by a range of communities across Australia.
