DESCRIPTION:Considerable efforts have been made to improve the outcomes for dogs arriving to animal shelters\, resulting in substantial increases in the number of dogs adopted and returned to their owners as well as reductions in euthanasia. Over this time\, the role of the animal shelter has changed as well\, from one of temporary holding to longer lengths of stay as animals with more complex behavioral and medical needs are placed. Thus\, we must also evolve the care that we provide to these dogs to adequately meet their welfare needs. \nThis session will discuss how we can best assess welfare and promising measures found across the scientific literature that can help us better understand dogs’ experiences in the shelter. With these measures in mind\, the presenter will describe recent research investigating the effects of housing and social interaction on shelter dog welfare. By identifying meaningful welfare measures\, interventions intended to improve the lives of shelter-living dogs can be tested and\, when impactful\, implemented in animal shelters. \n\nIdentify stressors in the shelter environment that may compromise canine welfare.\nDescribe the difficulties inherent in measuring welfare.\nExplain the different physiological\, cognitive\, behavioral\, and health measures that can be used to measure canine welfare in the shelter.\nSummarize how housing and interactions with other dogs may affect shelter dog welfare.\nDevelop a plan about how you could measure the welfare of dogs in your animal shelter.\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \nAbout Your Presenter \n\nLisa Gunter Ph.D MA CBCC-KA is the Maddie’s Fund Research Fellow at Arizona State University in the Department of Psychology and conducts her research in the Canine Science Collaboratory. She currently leads the Maddie’s Fund Nationwide Fostering Study. The goal of Dr. Gunter’s research is to better the lives of dogs and\, to this aim\, she has investigated the breed labeling of shelter dogs\, their breed heritage\, post-adoption interventions focused on owner retention\, various types of fostering\, enrichment\, and behavioral indicators of welfare for kenneled dogs. She has published her research in scientific journals\, presented her findings at numerous conferences\, and received national and international media attention for her work. \nPrior to her graduate school\, she worked as a behavior consultant and trainer in San Francisco where she taught group classes and consulted with owners experiencing issues of fear\, anxiety\, and aggression with their dogs. Her interest in canine behavior began in 2002 as an animal shelter volunteer\, training dogs in basic skills and assisting in shelter dog playgroups. That interest grew into a career where she managed the behavior programs of several shelters throughout the West. He played an active role in the instruction and development of the ‘Canine Training Instructor’ authoring two training manuals\, and designing coaching programmes that have enhanced the effective performance of operational dog handlers. \nAfter his retirement in 2016 Rob\, took on new challenges to complete his desire to learn\, lecturing at university (BSc Canine Behaviour and Training) where he specialised in ‘Assistance Dog Training’\, writing his book\, and practical assistance dog training using scent-work within epilepsy alert\, diabetes alert and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder alert. He also attended Bergin University of Canine Studies where he gained a valuable insight into assistance dog training\, particularly for PTSD sufferers. \nRob is now head of learning and development with the UK College of Scent Detection where he has been invited to share his knowledge world-wide\, lecturing in USA\, Australia and Europe. He is presently engaged in writing two academic papers for enhancing scent detection within the assistance dog community and emotional learning in our dogs. \nHowever\, prior to joining the Police Service Rob was a member of the British Army\, and as a veteran himself\, he has now combined his dog training and academic knowledge becoming a training advisor and consultant for the UK Charity Bravehound (www.Bravehound.co.uk). Here he has pioneered an assistance dog training methodology to incorporate scent alerts for PTSD. Realising the potential of ‘Scent Alert’ for PTSD assistance dogs\, where the dog will alert to the onset of a nightmare\, or day time anxiety attack. Rob is coaching a Phd student who is writing her thesis supporting and researching Robs hypothesis that dogs can detect these disturbing events\, giving our veterans life changing assistance from the dogs. \nFinally\, Rob truly understands the importance of a positive training schedule with the dogs he trains and the people he coaches. DESCRIPTION:At many shelters\, ringworm can lead to devastating consequences. However\, it does not have to be — with proper protocols\, it can be safely treated and cured.  At the San Francisco SPCA\, we save over 350 animals with ringworm every year. Wanting to do more\, we created the SPORE (Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education) program in 2013 to teach others how to better detect\, treat\, and manage ringworm in their shelter.  For this session\, we will be outlining research-based protocols that are in use here at the SF SPCA and examine how those same concepts apply to a variety of different shelters and rescues. We will explore the use of volunteers and the community to help this type of program flourish in fanatically constrained environments\, such as animal shelters.  We will also take a look at a new pilot foster program for ringworm animals called the Finishing School Foster Program that fosters out ringworm animals at the end of their treatment\, freeing up space in the shelter to help more animals in need. \nPresenter: Dr. Laura Mullen \nLaura started working at the San Francisco SPCA in 2001\, enjoyed a variety of roles with in the Shelter Medicine Department\, ranging from Veterinary Assistant to Foster Coordinator\, and has now settled in the position of Shelter Medicine Outreach Programs Manager.  She is passionate about education and finding workable solutions within the shelter community. In 2012\, Laura received a small grant from the SF SPCA board to start the SPORE Program that now saves over 350 animals with ringworm yearly.  SPORE\, Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education\, is a program that teaches shelters how to better detect\, treat and manage ringworm in the shelter setting.  Starting out her training locally\, focusing on municipal shelters in the Bay Area\, she soon discovered a niche that would help to save countless of innocent lives. DESCRIPTION:Whilst knowledge of dog behavior during adolescence arguably exists in the public and professional domain\, the period of adolescence in dogs and other companion animals is vastly understudied within the scientific community. \nAdolescence is a relatively long period of development during which a juvenile becomes an adult and is marked by intense neurological and hormonal changes. Within the domestic dog\, adolescence is typically considered to begin with the onset of pubertal development at around 6 months of age (puberty is thought to begin between 6-9 months in males and 6-16 months of age in females) and continues until behavioral/social maturity is reached. There is no precisely agreed age at which an individual dog can be considered behaviorally mature\, but dogs aged younger than two years have the shortest memory spans and certain trait level behavioral changes still occur between 18-24 months of age in border collie dogs. Therefore\, dogs aged under 2 years of age are likely to still be undergoing adolescent behavioral development. \nThis period of development is likely to be a particularly vulnerable time for dog-owner relationships\, and for shaping the long-term behavior of the developing animal. In this session\, the presenter will provide an overview of the neurological and behavioural changes that mammals undergo during adolescence\, along with highlighting the potential implications. \nAlthough the particular focus of this session will be on dogs\, much of the theory and evidence behind it should be applicable across all mammalian species\, and much of the background provided will be in general terms\, so the session should be applicable for anyone interested simply in mammalian behavior development. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC 1\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout Your Presenter \nDr. Naomi Harvey is a zoologist with a specialty in applied animal behavior and veterinary health and welfare. Since November 2019\, she has been working at the Dogs Trust as a research manager in canine behavior and she holds an honorary position as an associate professor of companion animal behavior and welfare at the University of Nottingham. With a BSc in zoology from Cardiff University and a PhD in applied canine behavior from the University of Nottingham\, Dr. Harvey has a particular specialty in designing and validating methods for securing robust and valid measures of animal behavior from their guardians. \nShe also has expertise in veterinary epidemiology\, having successfully designed and led the Itchy Dog project to investigate the environmental and genetic risk factors for canine atopic dermatitis and its impact on dog behavior. Her research interests lie in improving the evidence base for issues affecting companion animal welfare within the fields of veterinary medicine and clinical animal behavior\, to better inform how we manage and treat the animals in our care.
