SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/12/21 - Can Being a Little More Human Make a Difference? - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In order to make small yet fundamental changes to our dog training we must\, at times\, be prepared to change some of our plans and our techniques. For this webinar I would like you to open you mind\, and remember something that Admiral Grace Hooper once said\, “The most damaging phrase in the language is … ‘It’s always been done this way.’” \nWhy not be a little more human with your dog training? \nThe objectives for this webinar will encourage the candidates to think about and address the following: \n\nHow can we create the ‘ideal’ learning environment?\nHow can our attitude affect our training?\nWould Humanistic learning theories work with dogs?\n\nCEUs: PPAB 1.5\, CCPDT (pending)\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA (pending) \n\nAbout Your Presenter \n \nDr. Robert Hewings \nAuthor of the award winning ’Scent Training for every dog’ (First Stone Publishers) and head of learning and development for the UK College of Scent Detection\, Dr Robert Hewings is a highly experienced Canine Trainer. \nRob retired from London’s Metropolitan Police after 30 years’ exemplary service\, 25 of which was as an operational police dog handler. The final nine years as a full-time police instructor with the world-famous Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment. He has successfully underpinned his valuable operational experience with the highest academic qualifications\, his Doctoral study is entitled ‘Is there a better way? Can humanistic education improve operant conditioning in canine scent detection training?’ \nDuring his time at the prestigious Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment (2007-2016) Rob headed the training for SWAT dogs\, and was active in the instruction and development in all aspects of Police Search Dog Training. He played an active role in the instruction and development of the ‘Canine Training Instructor’ authoring two training manuals\, and designing coaching programmes that have enhanced the effective performance of operational dog handlers. \nAfter his retirement in 2016 Rob\, took on new challenges to complete his desire to learn\, lecturing at university (BSc Canine Behaviour and Training) where he specialised in ‘Assistance Dog Training’\, writing his book\, and practical assistance dog training using scent-work within epilepsy alert\, diabetes alert and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder alert. He also attended Bergin University of Canine Studies where he gained a valuable insight into assistance dog training\, particularly for PTSD sufferers. \nRob is now head of learning and development with the UK College of Scent Detection where he has been invited to share his knowledge world-wide\, lecturing in USA\, Australia and Europe. He is presently engaged in writing two academic papers for enhancing scent detection within the assistance dog community and emotional learning in our dogs. \nHowever\, prior to joining the Police Service Rob was a member of the British Army\, and as a veteran himself\, he has now combined his dog training and academic knowledge becoming a training advisor and consultant for the UK Charity Bravehound (www.Bravehound.co.uk). Here he has pioneered an assistance dog training methodology to incorporate scent alerts for PTSD. Realising the potential of ‘Scent Alert’ for PTSD assistance dogs\, where the dog will alert to the onset of a nightmare\, or day time anxiety attack. Rob is coaching a Phd student who is writing her thesis supporting and researching Robs hypothesis that dogs can detect these disturbing events\, giving our veterans life changing assistance from the dogs. \nFinally\, Rob truly understands the importance of a positive training schedule with the dogs he trains and the people he coaches. He wishes to share his love and experience of search training with you and your dog. Witnessing the enjoyment\, enthusiasm and excitement the dogs get from being engaged in the natural process of ‘nose-work’ has been his guilty pleasure for the last 25 years\, long may this continue!! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4188544

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/21/21 - Part 2: Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Now that we have the basics down\, let’s look at some examples of “data dashboards” and how they can be used to help drive conversations\, gain support\, and give leadership a snapshot of how an organization is doing.  In this presentation\, we will take the foundations from part one and explore ways of applying them to help move our organizations forward in the best way possible for our people and their pets. \nOther Webinars in this Series \n\nAug 17: Part 1 -Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations\nSept 21: Part 2 -Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations (this webinar)\n\nPresenters: \n \nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/data-driven-decision-making-for-animal-welfare-organizations-part-2/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/22/21 - Eat\, Play\, Love! Developing Your New Relationship With Your Puppy by Deb Jones - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is all about the start of your journey with your puppy. If we’re lucky\, we are starting out on a 15 year or so relationship. That’s much longer than many human relationships! We will talk about ways to set the tone for a long term mutually enjoyable partnership. People are often uncertain how to set the parameters in the early days with a new puppy. What’s important to do right away and what can (and often should) wait until later when the puppy is more mature? Doing the right things at the right times is really important\, but how do we know what to do and when to do it? Join Deb for a thorough discussion of the most important concepts and skills to introduce to your pup. She’ll talk about the importance of discovering valuable reinforcers while developing your relationship and establishing rules. Her 3 Rs for puppy raising of Relationship\, Reinforcers\, and Rules will serve as a clear guide for your puppy training in the early days. \nWhile food is one of the most universal and valuable reinforcers we can use\, people often take it for granted and don’t consider how to grow and maintain it over time. We’ll consider how to develop and increase interest and food\, and how to use it thoughtfully not only to reinforce behaviors but to build your relationship. When it comes to toys and play we will give you some clear ideas and guidelines for introducing toys\, determining your pup’s natural play preferences\, and putting structure around the games we play together. \nSpeaking of structure\, we will also consider the importance of your key rules for life and how to introduce and maintain those with consistency. Your rules may well be different than mine\, and that’s okay. We all have different situations and care about different aspects of living with dogs. \nWhen it comes to a new puppy we all want to do it “right” this time and avoid our previous mistakes. In the process we will likely make new and different mistakes. That’s okay\, life with a puppy isn’t about being perfect. It’s about doing our best to be the kind of life and training partners our pups need and deserve. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/fdsa-calendar

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/22/21 - Fighting Fungus with Education: SPORE Program and Finishing School Foster Program - Getting 2 Zero
DESCRIPTION:At many shelters\, ringworm can lead to devastating consequences. However\, it does not have to be — with proper protocols\, it can be safely treated and cured.  At the San Francisco SPCA\, we save over 350 animals with ringworm every year. Wanting to do more\, we created the SPORE (Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education) program in 2013 to teach others how to better detect\, treat\, and manage ringworm in their shelter.  For this session\, we will be outlining research-based protocols that are in use here at the SF SPCA and examine how those same concepts apply to a variety of different shelters and rescues. We will explore the use of volunteers and the community to help this type of program flourish in fanatically constrained environments\, such as animal shelters.  We will also take a look at a new pilot foster program for ringworm animals called the Finishing School Foster Program that fosters out ringworm animals at the end of their treatment\, freeing up space in the shelter to help more animals in need. \nPresenter: Dr. Laura Mullen \nLaura started working at the San Francisco SPCA in 2001\, enjoyed a variety of roles with in the Shelter Medicine Department\, ranging from Veterinary Assistant to Foster Coordinator\, and has now settled in the position of Shelter Medicine Outreach Programs Manager.  She is passionate about education and finding workable solutions within the shelter community. In 2012\, Laura received a small grant from the SF SPCA board to start the SPORE Program that now saves over 350 animals with ringworm yearly.  SPORE\, Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education\, is a program that teaches shelters how to better detect\, treat and manage ringworm in the shelter setting.  Starting out her training locally\, focusing on municipal shelters in the Bay Area\, she soon discovered a niche that would help to save countless of innocent lives. With the help of Maddie’s Fund\, more than 80 shelters from over 25 different states have come to the SF SPCA to receive training from the SPORE Program\, are currently treating ringworm at their facility\, eliminating fear though education in their community and saving lives. \nRegister here: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UIy9oXbuT7iUfsQ9PzOTgQ \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/27/21 - Speak the Right Words - Fear Free
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Debra Vey Voda-Hamilton\, principal at Hamilton Law and Mediation\, PLLC (HLM)\, will help vets and their staff learn how to appropriately address disagreements and foster mindful reactions to difficult discussions. \nAs the first conflict consultation practice in the U.S. dedicated to helping people resolve conflicts that arise in business and life over animals\, HLM uses empathy\, compassion\, and methods of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to assist people in understanding the “why” of a conflict that arises when dealing with animals. These conflicts are relational\, not transactional\, and can be nipped in the bud—before they nip the veterinarian in the butt—if skills to address the conflict are learned and applied. \nAttendees will gain the knowledge on how to peacefully and proactively:\n• Address disagreements\n• Choose to keep relationships or let them go peacefully\n• Appreciate how you (and others) think\n• Enhance your listening skills\n• Find strength in allowing curious questions and discussions\n• Realize you can navigate difficult conversations \nBrought to you by our friends at Vetoquinol. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://fearfreepets.com/resources/webinars/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/29/21 - The Adolescent Period of Development and Its Implications for Behavior/Dog-Owner - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Whilst knowledge of dog behavior during adolescence arguably exists in the public and professional domain\, the period of adolescence in dogs and other companion animals is vastly understudied within the scientific community. \nAdolescence is a relatively long period of development during which a juvenile becomes an adult and is marked by intense neurological and hormonal changes. Within the domestic dog\, adolescence is typically considered to begin with the onset of pubertal development at around 6 months of age (puberty is thought to begin between 6-9 months in males and 6-16 months of age in females) and continues until behavioral/social maturity is reached. There is no precisely agreed age at which an individual dog can be considered behaviorally mature\, but dogs aged younger than two years have the shortest memory spans and certain trait level behavioral changes still occur between 18-24 months of age in border collie dogs. Therefore\, dogs aged under 2 years of age are likely to still be undergoing adolescent behavioral development. \nThis period of development is likely to be a particularly vulnerable time for dog-owner relationships\, and for shaping the long-term behavior of the developing animal. In this session\, the presenter will provide an overview of the neurological and behavioural changes that mammals undergo during adolescence\, along with highlighting the potential implications. \nAlthough the particular focus of this session will be on dogs\, much of the theory and evidence behind it should be applicable across all mammalian species\, and much of the background provided will be in general terms\, so the session should be applicable for anyone interested simply in mammalian behavior development. \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC 1\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout Your Presenter \nDr. Naomi Harvey is a zoologist with a specialty in applied animal behavior and veterinary health and welfare. Since November 2019\, she has been working at the Dogs Trust as a research manager in canine behavior and she holds an honorary position as an associate professor of companion animal behavior and welfare at the University of Nottingham. With a BSc in zoology from Cardiff University and a PhD in applied canine behavior from the University of Nottingham\, Dr. Harvey has a particular specialty in designing and validating methods for securing robust and valid measures of animal behavior from their guardians. \nShe also has expertise in veterinary epidemiology\, having successfully designed and led the Itchy Dog project to investigate the environmental and genetic risk factors for canine atopic dermatitis and its impact on dog behavior. Her research interests lie in improving the evidence base for issues affecting companion animal welfare within the fields of veterinary medicine and clinical animal behavior\, to better inform how we manage and treat the animals in our care. Her PhD focused on how behavior develops in juvenile guide dogs\, and as such\, she has a particular interest in the adolescent phase of development and what it could mean for our pets. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4361943

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/29/21 - Denise Fenzi - Calming Games for High Arousal - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:You love your dog’s enthusiasm for the reinforcer but you don’t love the frantic ball of fur energy that comes out in its presence. You love your dog’s drive for work but sometimes you wish she took a day off once in a while. You love to train your dog at home but when you go out\, it’s as if the whole world is a trigger for high arousal. \nSound familiar? \nEasily aroused dogs are awesome dogs with fantastic working capacity but sometimes we wish they could self-regulate better. Self regulation is necessary to live peacefully in our world\, and if you have goals for competition\, they are essential in order to perform with a clear head. Plus\, it’s kinder to the dog. Who wants to exist in a state of overarousal all the time? \nSo what can you do? You can learn to provide appropriate outlets for that energy\, and give your dog the tools they need to relax (or escalate) their arousal as appropriate. Here’s where Calming Games for High Arousal come in! We hope you’ll join Denise Fenzi for this webinar to find out about the skills and games you can play with your dog to raise and lower arousal. An essential skill for both life and sports! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/fdsa-calendar

SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/2/21 - The Future of Volunteers in Sheltering\, Part 3 - Adisa
DESCRIPTION:When the pandemic hit\, many animal organizations either dramatically shifted the work of volunteers or put volunteer programs on hold altogether. With more and more people being vaccinated every day and glimmers of normal\, every-day life beginning to return\, what will this mean for the re-engagement of volunteers in our organizations? In this highly-interactive session\, we will explore the needs and issues you—as a leader of volunteers—need to plan for and brainstorm strategies for re-engaging volunteers safely while reimagining the roles volunteers play in our organizations to ensure they are best positioned to help us meet our missions. \nJoin your colleagues from animal organizations across the country and beyond for a highly interactive\, collaborative session as we explore what volunteer involvement in the animal welfare field looks like post-pandemic. The session will include: \n\nA “state of the union” on volunteer engagement for the animal welfare sector—including what shelters experienced\, where they are now in terms of reopening and having volunteers on site\, the challenges still being overcome\, and lessons learned.\nA case study from The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago on how they navigated the pandemic and have begun a multi-phase reopening and reintegration of volunteers.\nStrategies for navigating change in your organization and tips for reimaging the future of volunteer engagement.\n\nPlease note: The majority of the session will include expert presentations and large group discussion. Towards the end of the session\, we will offer breakouts on topics chosen by participants to allow for more personal networking and small-group discussions. For those not interested in breakouts (or experiencing Zoom fatigue!)\, you are welcome to simply listen during the breakout or leave the session at that time. \nPresenters and Facilitators: \nBetsy McFarland is a principal consultant for Adisa and leads Energize\, a program providing training\, resources and consulting in volunteerism. Betsy is a strategist\, facilitator\, and problem-solver who has forged a unique professional niche focused on empowering staff and volunteers committed to tackling challenging societal issues. She brings 25 years of experience in animal protection\, including 18 years at The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) where she served as vice president of the Companion Animals section. She has extensive experience growing volunteers within organizations large and small. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/3/21 - Did They Actually Live Happily Ever After? Debunking Translocation Myths - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:It’s commonly thought that removing wild animals from our backyards and neighborhoods and releasing them into seemingly suitable habitat miles away is a humane approach for solving conflicts with wildlife. But is it actually? This webinar will delve into what truly happens to wild animals after they’re trapped and moved out of the home ranges they are familiar with and into unknown habitat. We will also discuss strategies that offer sound alternatives to capture and removal. \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner.
