DESCRIPTION:We have an interesting little treat for this coming CASCAR call Tuesday May 18th at 1 pm – we will be hearing from our friends Dave Hachey and Dr. Lucas Pantaleon\, part of the team that brought us Rescue\, aka accelerated hydrogen peroxide\, about a new air purifier they are helping bring to the market. Given the way Rescue transformed shelter sanitation in many places\, when Dave says he’s on to something we tend to pay attention over here at team KSMP. They have a little presentation about the product and then we will have Q and A. This is not a sales pitch\, really intended to be an informative exchange so we can ask questions and understand the science and potential of a novel approach to pathogen inactivation in the air. I hope we might start seeing some of the technology in other congregate spaces as well so we might as well get a jump on learning about it! \nThat may not take up all the time we have\, in which case we can talk about whatever is on folks’ minds or kick back early. One thing that is on my mind and that I hope to talk about in more depth in an upcoming CASCAR call is the hints of increasing dog intake/in-shelter populations that have been mentioned on this list. If this is something you’re seeing\, I’d love to hear about it. If this is something you’re NOT seeing\, I’d also love to hear about it! I know there’s been a lot of anxiety\, which I share\, about reopening and seeing shelters get inundated to pre-pandemic levels or beyond. A couple of weeks ago there were a bunch of articles around the one year-ish anniversary and this line from one Fast Time’s article really struck me: \nYou will never unlearn the things you now know about yourself\, about how you handle an emergency and what you can withstand. \nThat’s certainly been true when it comes to our amazing California shelter colleagues. We always knew you were a fantastic group of humans\, but honestly\, when we started meeting as a group it would have been hard to imagine either the challenges that awaited us or how creative and resilient we would turn out to be. \nAs we enter the next phase\, we here at CASCAR central are wondering how we can turn that creativity and resilience towards sustaining the positive changes that have come out of the pandemic and meet the challenges associated with re-opening and recovery. \nLet’s talk about it at your next CASCAR call at the NEW TIME of 1:00 on the first and third TUESDAYS. \nWe hope some new folks or folks who used to come can join at this new time and also hope many of our regulars can make it. DESCRIPTION:On this week’s CASCAR call\, Jace Huggins from the Front Street Shelter in Sacramento will be describing how they’ve partnered with their local public health department to get vaccine information out to the community (in five different languages!) where it is most needed\, in conjunction with the team’s regular activities in the field. I LOVE this on so many levels – showcasing the shelter’s commitment to “both ends of the leash\,” building trust with local communities\, allowing field officers (most of whom are already vaccinated) to be able to share their direct experience. As we’ve found with so many other things in animal welfare\, no amount of preaching and teaching will replace one on one human connection. And this collaboration has already led to some exciting future collaborative plans…so hope you can join us to hear all about it and ask questions. \nAnd a heads up: after next Thursday’s call we will be shifting to the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. starting on April 6th. DESCRIPTION:What do (and don’t) we know about how genetics affects canine aggression? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica Hekman will take a deep dive into her own area of research – how genetics affects personality in dogs. How much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? In this webinar\, Jessica will particularly address examples from human literature about traits that are similar to reactivity and aggression in dogs\, why they are so hard to understand from a genetics viewpoint\, and what the future holds for us. \nAs always\, there will be something for everyone\, so come listen and ask questions\, whether you are just starting to wrap your head around genetics or whether you’re a confirmed science geek! \n  \nCEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC (pending)\, KPA 1 \n  \nAbout The Presenter\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\n \n\nJessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs. DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.     \nNEW TIME as of 9/23/20 – 8 AM PT\, 11 AM ET. \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends.
