SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CA Shelters/CASCAR - 8/18/20 - California: Telemedicine\, Law and Policy - UC Davis KSMP/CASCAR Group
DESCRIPTION:California: Telemedicine\, law and policy\nHello CASCARarians\, \nJust a quick reminder that tomorrow’s CASCAR meeting is an exciting one that many of us have been waiting for! \nIf you are a California shelter that has ever wanted to explore telemedicine but you’re not sure whether it’s even legally permitted\, you’re not going to want to miss tomorrow’s webinar brought to you by the two CA-licensed animal law attorneys behind California’s new shelter policy and legal services program\, Shelter PALS. \nIn one short hour\, Brandy Kuentzel\, SF SPCA General Counsel\, and Bruce Wagman\,  leader of an exclusive animal law practice in a major US firm\, will guide us through: \n·        Determining whether a veterinarian can legally engage in telemedicine for animals at a CA shelter\, or who are in foster programs under a shelter program. \n·         If so\, discuss under what circumstances veterinary telemedicine may be legally appropriate for shelter animals in CA. \n·         Gain a basic understanding of CA law and walk through real-world examples to facilitate learning. \n·         Learn more about a new program at the San Francisco SPCA\, Shelter Policy and Legal Services (Shelter PALS)\, and how CA shelters can apply for free 1:1 legal support through Shelter PALS to explore possible implementation at your own shelter. \nNote that all are welcome\, but this webinar is specifically tailored to CA shelters (public\, private and hybrid) and will address CA law only. \nWe will be gathering in our usual Zoom room at: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nSee you in the morning! \nDr. Kate Hurley and the KSMP Team

SUMMARY:Weekly Call - Monday Mornings - Connect With Other Animal Shelter Professionals - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, animal shelter workers\, volunteers and animal welfare leaders from across the country have been meeting every Monday morning at 7am PT/10am ET to discuss protocols\, ideas\, obstacles they’re facing and more.   \nLed by Kristen Hassen-Auerbach\, Director of Pima Animal Care in Tucson\, AZ\, these calls have provided an opportunity for people to connect that otherwise may not have even met.    \n“The purpose of these calls is simple – maintain connection among shelter professionals\, provide support and comradery\, and share science-based news and information along with emerging best practices in animal welfare\,” Hassen-Auerbach says. “These calls are always lively and interesting and we’re not afraid to debate and share different perspectives from the attendees. You can take center stage and share your thoughts and ideas in front of several hundred of your colleagues or quietly drink your morning coffee and listen in.”  \nFor many\, these calls have been an invaluable resource. “When the subject of DEI (Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion) came to the front of all of our minds\, the calls adapted and we had a space to again learn from one another\,” said Emily Klehm from South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights\, IL. “The calls have been my go-to source for grant information\, statistics and trends. I’ve also been able to identify and connect to colleagues working on the same issues in similar communities.”  \nDr. Ellen Jefferson\, Executive Director at Austin Pets Alive! adds\, “We hear from people in the industry who have important information related to COVID\, new programming and research.  This is information you can’t possibly get in your day to day work at your local shelter.”  \nIf you’re a shelter professional\, dedicated volunteer or run a rescue organization\, we want you to join us! Bookmark this link and we will see you on Monday! \nNote: The calls are recorded so if you can’t make it\, you can listen in later. If you haven’t already\, join the Facebook group to access the link to recorded calls and to connect with others on there.

SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CASCAR - 7/14/20 and 7/21/20 - California Animal Shelters - DEI - UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:This Tuesday: Diving back into social and racial justice for California animal shelters\n\nYou are invited to join our two-part discussion session happening this Tuesday\, July 14th.\n\nThe sheltermedicine.com newsletter: your portal to better sheltering.\n\n\n\nSave the Date: DEI and your shelter.\n\nTwo-part DEI discussion sessions this Tuesday (7/14) and next Tuesday (7/21).\n\n\nHi All\,\n\nWe just got off the phone from the group planning session for our upcoming CASCAR calls and we’re really looking forward to our time together on Tuesday! Jose Ocano and Jyothi Robertson will be joining us again for a two-parter this Tuesday\, July 14th\, and the following Tuesday\, July 21st\, to dive deeper into applying a racial and social justice lens both within our organizations and to the work that we do.\n\nWe will move through definitions and establishing cultural foundations into practical tactics with plenty of room for discussion. As always\, our hope is to create a respectful and friendly context for exploration and sharing of questions\, ideas and experiences.\n\nJust shedding lots and lots of light on this discussion and refusing to let it fade into the background as other pressing issues emerge (and surge☹️)\, is really helpful. At least\, that’s our sincere hope.\n\n\n\nCheck the CA shelters page for links to this and previous CASCAR calls.\n\nWe would love for this to be inclusive of interested staff at every level so please feel free to share with your team. Coming up\, we can discuss changing the time of these calls to better accommodate schedules now that more people are back to work onsite\, We realize 10am isn’t the easiest for kennel staff.\n\nAs always\, if you have questions or suggestions for this discussion or future CASCAR topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com <mailto:CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com>.\nRemember\, if you volunteer to lead a section of a call\, you get a CASCAR mug of your own!\n\n\nDr. Kate Hurley and the KSMP Team

We welcome others to come prepared to informally share more about their altered teaching models. \n\nDr. Crawford also shared this timely veterary student survey to take a look at: \nUS – VETERINARY STUDENT SURVEY  The VBMA\, the Veterinary Information Network (VIN)\, and VIN Foundation developed a survey to shed light on if\, and how\, the pandemic is impacting veterinary students preparing to enter the veterinary workforce. More than 1\,000 veterinary students from the classes of ’20 and ’21 at US and Caribbean veterinary schools responded. The survey results showed that most students felt that their school’s reaction to COVID-19 was reasonable\, and nearly 90% of the class of 2020 had signed or verbally agreed to employment. However\, mental wellbeing of students has declined\, and nearly two-thirds of the class of 2021 had externship experiences postponed or canceled.

SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CASCAR - 7/7/20 - California Animal Shelters - UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:Given the craziness that can afflict animal shelters around the July 4th weekend we were thinking of cancelling next Tuesday’s CASCAR call. However\, there were lots of questions after the webinar we did for Cal Animals during the usual CASCAR slot this week and we didn’t get to all of them\, so we figured we could use the time to answer those if there are any lingering. And we are working on a follow up\, more tactical session on racial and social justice in California animal sheltering/community animal management\, hopefully to really dig into policies and practices that will result in meaningful shifts. If you have questions and ideas to inform planning that would be welcome. Or just in general if you want to drop in and say hi – the truth is we just like to see you all! \nSo\, low key and don’t worry if you can’t make it this week\, but we’ll be hanging out at the usual spot at 10 a.m. on Tuesday July 7th: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg. \nAnd as always\, if you have questions or suggestions for future CASCAR call topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com. \nHope your fourth of July weekend is not too hectic and all the pets and people stay safe! \nKate \nKate F. SUMMARY:California Shelters - CASCAR Weekly COVID-19 Check-In Call - link in CA Group Activity Feed
DESCRIPTION:Posting:  6/19/20 \nToday is Juneteenth\, also known as Freedom Day\, a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. This year\, many Americans are observing the holiday by not only reflecting how far we’ve come\, but by taking stock of how far we have left to go in the fight against inequality. \nEarlier this month our program shared our commitment to doing that soul-searching work with you\, our sheltering community\, including the specific commitment to engage in anti-racist learning and to create a space for you to learn and share alongside us if you so desire. \nNext week on Tuesday June 23rd at 10:00 am\, KSMP is hosting our first call to talk about what this moment in our history could mean for us in California animal sheltering should we rise to meet this national call to action with open minds and hearts.  \nJose Ocano  (erstwhile Pacific Region Director and now Senior Director of Culture and Talent for Best Friends) and Dr. Jyothi Robertson will be joining us to facilitate the discussion. Also joining us will be special guest James Evans\, long time animal welfare leader and president of Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE). \nIf you are interested in joining the conversation\, please use the zoom link below. \nhttps://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nHope to see you there! \nTeam KSMP

DESCRIPTION:This week’s breakout rooms will be dedicated to past Maddie’s Lifesaving Apprenticeship Subjects. \nThe AmPA! summit offers shelters and rescues a chance to join in breakout roundtables\, work with experts\, and engage with leaders from communities who have been hit the hardest by this disease. \nYou’ll hear from Dr. Ellen Jefferson and the instructors from Maddie’s Lifesaving Academy\, as well as other industry leaders\, and the communities who have been affected the most. But more importantly\, you’ll be able to engage face to face (digitally!) with people like you. Because not feeling alone makes this crisis a lot easier. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUtdOurrjMpG9d2xhjULHzuibbbl_gZBeu4
