SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/11/21 - Your End of the Leash Part One: Handler Body Language - Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:While much of dog training seems focused on the dog\, handlers can and do affect their dog’s behavior and learning. Masters of body language subtleties\, dogs are finely attuned to us\, aware of how we move\, act\, speak\, breathe. Many training problems are rooted in communication issues\, caused by a handler’s body language and unintended messages. \nThe dog’s understanding of the handler’s behavior is built in the details of how the handler typically moves\, laughs\, smiles\, speaks\, breathes\, etc. in familiar and comfortable settings. But under stress\, in unfamiliar or challenging situations\, things can change. \nShifts in the handler signals to the dog that the person he relies on is alarmed\, angry\, worried\, or even afraid. Depending on the dog\, this can have significant impact on behavior. \nThis webinar will help you become more aware of your own body language: \n\nBreathing\nMuscle tension\nFlexion & stance\nBlink rate\nCore & gaze orientation\n\nAs a bonus\, you’ll learn Suzanne’s 5 Point Check approach to handler awareness & self monitoring. This simple but effective technique will help you\, and – for professionals – is ideal for your students. \nWe’ll be doing some interactive exercises throughout the webinar so you get to experiment and experience how simple changes can provide profound changes – for the better! \nJoin us – your dog will thank you for your improved awareness of your role as your dog’s partner. \nALL WEBINARS ARE RECORDED. A link will be sent to you 48 hours after the completion of the webinar for you to access the recording and watch at your convenience. If you need CEUs for IAABC or PPAB\, instructions on how to get those CEUs will be made available during the webinar. CEUs for IAABC and PPAB are pending. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/404610795744144141?source=Website

SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 3/18/21 - Vaccine equity\, one health\, and how shelters can play a role - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:On this week’s CASCAR call\, Jace Huggins from the Front Street Shelter in Sacramento will be describing how they’ve partnered with their local public health department to get vaccine information out to the community (in five different languages!) where it is most needed\, in conjunction with the team’s regular activities in the field. I LOVE this on so many levels – showcasing the shelter’s commitment to “both ends of the leash\,” building trust with local communities\, allowing field officers (most of whom are already vaccinated) to be able to share their direct experience. As we’ve found with so many other things in animal welfare\, no amount of preaching and teaching will replace one on one human connection. And this collaboration has already led to some exciting future collaborative plans…so hope you can join us to hear all about it and ask questions. \nAnd a heads up: after next Thursday’s call we will be shifting to the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. starting on April 6th. We’re sorry for the switcheroo for those who have an easier time with morning calls – and hope some who haven’t been able to make the morning calls might be able to join us some afternoons. \nCASCAR room link: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg

SUMMARY:Online Course - 3/18/21 - Community Engagement: The lifesaving philosophy - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:The term “community engagement” gets thrown around a lot\, as if it is something that an officer can do if they have a few extra minutes.  To unlock the full potential of community engagement\, however\, we must start thinking of it as less of a project and more of a state of mind. This lifesaving philosophy will not only help save the lives of animals but could potentially save an officer’s life as well.  In this course you will learn how embracing community engagement as a mindset can\, and will\, increase lifesaving efforts and officer safety. \nJoin us on March 18\, 2021 at 01:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://network.bestfriends.org/tools-and-information/e-learning/live-online-training

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/18/21 - Confronting Conflict with Teams - Banfield
DESCRIPTION:Conflict is something that\, as much as we try\, we cannot avoid because conflict is comes up anytime your view differs from another’s — and humans are opinionated beings. While most of us have a strong reactions to conflict\, including (but not limited to) fear; avoidance; and/or dread\, conflict can also have positive impacts. It can allow for exploration of new and different ways of doing things resulting in better outcomes. When we think of the negatives of conflict it’s because of the emotions that conflict evokes — often making situations feel explosive. By learning how to step up to conflict and confronting it head on by using the right approach\, you can turn conflict into a positive for both you and your team. \nDate: March 18\nTime:  11:00 – 12:30pm PST\nCourse Timing: 1.5 hour virtual session with 15 minute pre-work (RACE approved) \nThis session will help you: \n\nDefine the five modes of handling conflict; competing\, collaborating\, avoiding\, accommodating\nHelp you understand how to identify the best mode for various situations to produce a positive experience\nIdentify where you may or may not be flexing your approach to conflict in a current team situation to determine what approach would be best to get you a positive outcome\n\nWhen we step up to conflict\, instead of away from it\, and take the right approach we can change our perception and\, ultimately\, end in a better place than we are today. \nJoin us for the conversation! \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://app.jobvite.com/TalentNetwork/action/campaign/w/Nzc3MzE

SUMMARY:Online Course - 3/18/21 - Advanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the Scanner - Best Friends
DESCRIPTION:Animal control officers play an integral role today in the reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter\, but all too often\, officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID\, tags\, or microchip. This workshop highlights successful efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without obvious identification. \nJoin us on March 18\, 2021 at 02:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://network.bestfriends.org/tools-and-information/e-learning/live-online-training

SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/18/21 - Reuniting and Renesting Orphaned Wildlife - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Does your agency or organization get calls about birds and squirrels fallen out of nests\, very young raccoons seen without mom\, or fawns and baby rabbits alone in fields or backyards? Whether or not you respond to these types of calls or refer them to a wildlife rehabilitator\, this webinar will help you determine and achieve the best outcome for these animals. (Spoiler alert: many of these baby animals are probably not actually orphaned!) Learn how to know when intervention is necessary\, how to reunite dependent young with their parents whenever possible\, and how to best work with wildlife rehabilitators when reuniting is not possible.\n\nOther Webinars with HSUS: \n\n\nMarch 18: Reuniting Orphaned Wildlife (this webinar)\nMay 18: Animal Cruelty Investigations and the Fourth Amendment\nJune 8: Helping Wild Animals in Distress\nAug 3: Did They Actually Live Happily Ever After? We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n  \n \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n  \n\nPresenters\nJohn Griffin has 20+ years of field experience ranging from resolving conflict issues with raccoons to protecting great apes. As Senior Director of Urban Wildlife Programs for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, John oversees field service and policy programs that resolve conflicts with wildlife. John has provided trainings and consultation for animal care and control\, municipal agencies and state agencies. He has led workshops at national\, state and regional conferences\, and has been a speaker at academic and international conferences. John has also worked extensively with the professional wildlife rehabilitation community as well as to reform the commercial wildlife control industry and serves on advisory boards and working groups with those focuses. John is published on a number of topics and was recently a National Geographic Expedition team member exploring raccoon behavior in urban areas. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/reuniting-and-renesting-orphaned-wildlife/
