SUMMARY:Webinar - 3/30/22 - Introduction to a Quality of Life App for Animal Shelters - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Quality of Life reflects the balance between positive and negative emotions experienced by an animal and is particularly important to consider in animal shelters where animals can face a myriad of stressors. Quality of Life assessments provide a methodological approach to scoring welfare. They can include physiological measurements and owner-completed questionnaires. In the shelter\, Quality of Life assessments can help shelters to identify animals with poor welfare so they can be fast-tracked for intervention and track changes in the welfare of individual animals during their shelter stay. However\, most of the existing quality-of-life assessment tools are not suitable for the shelter environment. Many of the tools require the assessor to have a thorough understanding of the animal’s typical behavior and preferences\, a prerequisite that is hard to meet in the shelter environment and fail to capture important environmental parameters that are unique to the shelter environment. \nThe Penn Vet Quality of Life Tool app was developed to provide animal shelters with a practical\, research-based method of assessing the quality of life of cats and dogs in their care. The assessment covers three areas of animal welfare: environment\, behavior\, and physical health. Attendees will learn about the development of the Penn Vet Quality of Life Tool\, the contents of the assessment\, and the data produced by the app\, including the quality-of-life scores and figures. The talk will include preliminary data about the tool’s use in animal shelters and discuss future plans for the app. \nThis session is part of the Shelter Medicine series\, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. \nThis live and recorded program is: \n\nApproved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit\nPending approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/sheltermed-3-30-22

SUMMARY:Webinar – 3/30/22 – No one told me about Teenaged Dogs and Cats! What to expect in these developmental stages – ACVB
DESCRIPTION:Pet guardians enroll their puppies and kittens in socialization classes with the hopes of bringing up a well-rounded social pet; good with people\, other animals and being in different environments. However\, sometimes these pets still go through a “difficult” developmental period and can exhibit behavioral problems. Can something be done to prevent this occurrence? What should we expect as our adolescent dogs and cats go through the life stages after socialization? How do we manage and work with them? This webinar will answer these questions and more! \nDr. Wailani Sung has a passion for helping owners prevent or effectively manage behavior problems in companion animals\, enabling them to maintain a high quality of life. Dr. Sung obtained her Master’s degree and Doctorate in Psychology\, with a special interest in animal behavior from The University of Georgia. Upon completion of these graduate programs\, she obtained a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine\, then board certification in veterinary behavioral medicine. Dr. Sung is currently the Director of Behavior and Welfare programs at the San Francisco SPCA. In this position\, Dr. Sung contributes to the management and treatment of the behavioral needs of the shelter pets at the San Francisco SPCA. She also oversees the shelter behavior program and also provides behavioral consultations at the Behavior Specialty Clinic located at the San Francisco SPCA. She does not consider any patient or problem hopeless\, and her treatment protocols are based on scientific information about animal behavior\, psychopharmacology\, and learning theory. \nDr. Sung frequently lectures on managing common behavioral issues and consults with veterinary practices to design programs and train staff in best practices for making vet visits less stressful and developing treatment protocols for patients with behavioral issues. Dr. Sung also provide consultations to shelter and rescue organizations. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/5727838076149537547

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/5/22 and 4/13/22 - Alternatives to Declaw - CVMA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we will explore how cat scratching—a normal feline behavior—can lead to one of two unwanted consequences: either the owner seeks a permanent solution and asks for a surgical solution known as “declawing\,” or the animal is rehomed or surrendered to a shelter. We will address the importance of cats performing normal behaviors\, such as appropriate opportunities to scratch\, and will explore humane solutions that are based in understanding the nature of this behavior. We will learn how correct tools\, techniques\, and newly developed products can positively impact the human-animal bond. This presentation aims to provide the veterinarian with talking points for a welfare-centered communication with owners of cats with scratching problems\, hopefully eliminating the need for the very controversial surgical approach. \nDates and Times\nTuesday\, April 5\, 2022 | 5:30 PM-6:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: March 29\, 2022 \nWednesday\, April 13\, 2022| 12:30 PM-1:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: April 6\, 2022 \nSpeaker\n\nJeannine Berger\, DVM\, DACVB\, DACAW\, CAWA \nDr. Jeannine Berger is one of the few veterinarians that is double-boarded with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists as well as the American College for Animal Welfare. Currently\, Dr. Berger is the Senior Vice President of Rescue and Animal Welfare for the San Francisco SPCA\, where she oversees all aspects of animal care. She first obtained her veterinary degree in 1991 in Zurich\, Switzerland. In 1998\, Dr. Berger moved to California to work at UC Davis\, and in 2019\, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Global Animal Welfare by the World Veterinary Association for her excellent contributions to promoting the welfare of animals. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://cvma.net/learning/cvma-ce-programs-2/online-seminar-alternative-to-declaw-april-5-13-2022/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/12/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Place - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Some animals would be best served by shelter admission\, while others would be better served outside shelter walls. The Right Place is the place that provides the best possible outcome in the most humane and efficient way and may include the animal’s current home\, community\, foster or finder’s home\, partner organizations or the shelter. Determining the Right Place depends on the needs of the animal\, the capacity of the shelter\, and also the capacity and willingness of the community member who brings the animal to our attention. In this webinar\, Drs. Cindy Karsten and Chumkee Aziz will guide you through the framework that allows you to remove decision fatigue and get animals where they need to be—or help them right where they are. \nThis webinar is part 1 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters:\nCynthia (Cindy) Karsten\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\nThroughout her KSMP career\, Dr. Karsten has helped to identify and implement best practice protocols and capacity for care models at shelters across the United States and Canada. Dr. Karsten’s recent work has focused on leading shelter medicine Bootcamps\, concentrated six-week courses for shelter leaders. The Bootcamps combine online learning with twice-weekly Zoom meetings at which participants can ask questions of KSMP experts and share their own experiences with peers making change at other shelters. \nDr. Karsten became board certified in Shelter Medicine Practice in November\, 2017. Her main areas of interest include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, working with shelter leaders on change management\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about equity. \nMehnaz (Chumkee) Aziz\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\n Chumkee obtained her DVM degree at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She then completed an internship at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC in 2013\, which included experience in anti-cruelty work and shelter medicine. Chumkee was a resident at the KSMP from 2013-2016.She headed the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative and served as Senior Director of Shelter Medicine Services at the ASPCA before returning to the KSMP in January\, 2022 as an outreach veterinarian. \nHer current interests include the role of community collaboration in mitigating pet homelessness\, proactive shelter population management\, and infectious disease prevention in shelters. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/13/22 - Handling “Nuisance” Wildlife Calls - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Getting calls from the public about opossums stuck in garbage cans? Foxes denning under sheds or porches? Woodchucks nibbling in the garden? \nThis webinar expands upon our “Top 10 Tips for Taking Wildlife Calls” training by providing natural history profiles on our most common Wild Neighbors (including skunks\, squirrels\, raccoons\, opossums\, woodchucks\, foxes\, coyotes\, and more!)\, as well as species-specific advice for humanely solving conflicts with them. Learn how to give simple tips and instructions to the public over the phone (without your having to dispatch an officer!) so that they can solve conflicts with wildlife in an effective\, humane\, and long-term manner. \n  \n \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \n  \nFounded in 1954\, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters\, the HSUS takes on puppy mills\, factory farms\, trophy hunts\, animal testing and other cruel industries\, and together with its affiliates\, rescues and provides direct care for over 100\,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy\, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues. \n\nPresenters:\nAs Director of Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, Lynsey White helps urban and suburban communities find effective and humane solutions to conflicts with species such as coyotes\, Canada geese\, white-tailed deer\, and beavers.  She also runs the Wild Neighbors program\, which provides animal care and control professionals with resources\, trainings\, and consultation in the adoption of humane policies and practices for responding to calls about wildlife. Her background includes completing coyote research and data analysis for The Cook County Coyote project in Chicago\, Illinois\, and publishing an analysis of coyote attacks on people throughout the U.S. and Canada. Lynsey has a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology & Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and has led wildlife conflict resolution trainings for thousands of animal care and control professionals across the U.S. and beyond. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/handling-nuisance-wildlife-calls/
