SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/5/22 and 4/13/22 - Alternatives to Declaw - CVMA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we will explore how cat scratching—a normal feline behavior—can lead to one of two unwanted consequences: either the owner seeks a permanent solution and asks for a surgical solution known as “declawing\,” or the animal is rehomed or surrendered to a shelter. We will address the importance of cats performing normal behaviors\, such as appropriate opportunities to scratch\, and will explore humane solutions that are based in understanding the nature of this behavior. We will learn how correct tools\, techniques\, and newly developed products can positively impact the human-animal bond. This presentation aims to provide the veterinarian with talking points for a welfare-centered communication with owners of cats with scratching problems\, hopefully eliminating the need for the very controversial surgical approach. \nDates and Times\nTuesday\, April 5\, 2022 | 5:30 PM-6:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: March 29\, 2022 \nWednesday\, April 13\, 2022| 12:30 PM-1:45 PM\nRegistration\, cancellation\, and substitution deadline: April 6\, 2022 \nSpeaker\n\nJeannine Berger\, DVM\, DACVB\, DACAW\, CAWA \nDr. Jeannine Berger is one of the few veterinarians that is double-boarded with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists as well as the American College for Animal Welfare. Currently\, Dr. Berger is the Senior Vice President of Rescue and Animal Welfare for the San Francisco SPCA\, where she oversees all aspects of animal care. She first obtained her veterinary degree in 1991 in Zurich\, Switzerland. In 1998\, Dr. Berger moved to California to work at UC Davis\, and in 2019\, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Global Animal Welfare by the World Veterinary Association for her excellent contributions to promoting the welfare of animals. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://cvma.net/learning/cvma-ce-programs-2/online-seminar-alternative-to-declaw-april-5-13-2022/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/12/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Place - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Some animals would be best served by shelter admission\, while others would be better served outside shelter walls. The Right Place is the place that provides the best possible outcome in the most humane and efficient way and may include the animal’s current home\, community\, foster or finder’s home\, partner organizations or the shelter. Determining the Right Place depends on the needs of the animal\, the capacity of the shelter\, and also the capacity and willingness of the community member who brings the animal to our attention. In this webinar\, Drs. Cindy Karsten and Chumkee Aziz will guide you through the framework that allows you to remove decision fatigue and get animals where they need to be—or help them right where they are. \nThis webinar is part 1 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nPresenters:\nCynthia (Cindy) Karsten\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\nThroughout her KSMP career\, Dr. Karsten has helped to identify and implement best practice protocols and capacity for care models at shelters across the United States and Canada. Dr. Karsten’s recent work has focused on leading shelter medicine Bootcamps\, concentrated six-week courses for shelter leaders. The Bootcamps combine online learning with twice-weekly Zoom meetings at which participants can ask questions of KSMP experts and share their own experiences with peers making change at other shelters. \nDr. Karsten became board certified in Shelter Medicine Practice in November\, 2017. Her main areas of interest include teaching and mentoring undergraduate and veterinary students\, working with shelter leaders on change management\, and providing accessible\, affordable veterinary care to everyone who seeks it. She also continues to work to understand her role and that of animal shelters in increasing awareness of social justice issues and implementing policies to bring about equity. \nMehnaz (Chumkee) Aziz\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian\n Chumkee obtained her DVM degree at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She then completed an internship at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC in 2013\, which included experience in anti-cruelty work and shelter medicine. Chumkee was a resident at the KSMP from 2013-2016.She headed the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative and served as Senior Director of Shelter Medicine Services at the ASPCA before returning to the KSMP in January\, 2022 as an outreach veterinarian. \nHer current interests include the role of community collaboration in mitigating pet homelessness\, proactive shelter population management\, and infectious disease prevention in shelters. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 4/14/22 - Denise Fenzi - Gaming the System: Develop Your Creative Training Potential! - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Incorporating creativity into your training plan is critical if you want your dog to remain excited and focused on the training game even when there are no cookies or toys to magnetize your dog. Creative training gives your dog an innate reason to pay attention – the work is interesting! Your dog doesn’t know what might happen next! The solution to the puzzle may not be obvious! And while you’re at it\, you’ll develop resilience and persistence – it’s okay to be wrong! \nBut wait\, there’s more! There’s the handler as well. When you incorporate creative strategies into your training\, you’ll begin to think in new ways and quite likely find holes in your training before they become problems. You will find yourself looking forward to your training\, and enjoying the game that training should be! \nThis webinar will provide plenty of video examples of creative training\, along with ideas to help you come up with your own creative training plans. You can learn to be more creative. \nJoin Denise in this webinar\, and find yourself itching to train your dog. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Mindfulness for Animal Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Registration NOW OPEN. visit: www.mindfulvetmed.com/coursecalendar\n\nThis session will include brief practices as well as an overview of mindfulness as it relates to the animal welfare field. We will take a look at the emotions and frustrations we face which can lead to things like compassion fatigue and burn out\, and which can also leave us questioning ourselves and even our ability to move forward. Come join us as we explore opportunities to move through our busy days (and save lives!) with more space and less reactivity.\n\nAfter this session\, you’re invited to continue the exploration with our Foundations of Mindfulness course\, starting April 25th-open to all animal welfare team members!\n\nThere are NO REQUIRED REGISTRATION FEES. Ever. For any of our courses. It is our intent that the teachings of mindfulness remain available to all who may benefit\, regardless of their ability to pay.
