SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/29/22 - Lost Cats and Found Hounds: Community-based Solutions to Boost Your Return-to-Owner Metrics - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:How many lost pets are coming into your local animal shelter in an average year? In Virginia\, public animal shelters receive thousands of lost pets each year\, with many of them never being reclaimed. In response\, Loudoun County Animal Services initiated a series of programs to help lost pets find their way back home\, simultaneously identifying and reaching out to the communities least likely to reclaim lost pets. This webinar will take you through the budget-friendly process they implemented to get lost pets back home\, and help you keep owned pets with their families\, saving room at the shelter for animals who need it most. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenter: Nina Stively is the Director of Loudoun County Animal Services in northern Virginia\, an independent government agency that includes the County animal shelter and a team of sworn humane law enforcement officers. Nina is a Certified Animal Cruelty Investigator\, a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator\, and an Animal Control Officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is a self-professed cat person\, but is currently training for a canine biathalon with one of her adopted dogs\, Whistlepig. Nina shares her home with two very supportive humans\, six chickens\, two cats\, three dogs\, and an assortment of foster animals. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/lost-cats-and-found-hounds-community-based-solutions-to-boost-your-return-to-owner-metrics/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/6/22 - Maddie's Insights: Social Pain in Dogs - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Maddie’s Insights are monthly webcasts with practical tips based on current research to help pets and people. This month’s webinar is presented by Dr. Franklin McMillan\, DVM. \nThe experience of unpleasant emotions is often referred to as “emotional pain”\, such as when someone loses a loved one. The emotions that arise when one’s social bonds with another are impaired or lost – such as feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and rejection – comprise one type of emotional pain\, called “social pain”. Recent research has found that the term “pain” is not just a metaphor but is based on the finding that social pain is processed in the same brain regions where physical pain is processed. In addition\, similar drugs can alleviate both physical and social pain. For social species\, like elephants\, horses\, sheep\, rats\, guinea pigs\, dogs\, and humans\, social pain plays a powerful role in one’s well-being and quality of life. For today’s domestic dog\, the issue may be of greater importance than for any other species on Earth. Evidence indicates that through domestication the emotional bonding propensity of dogs toward humans has been greatly amplified\, which appears to have resulted in both greater joy for dogs when in the company of humans\, but also greater suffering when denied human companionship. Only by educating all those who care for dogs will “man’s best friend” receive the care they so strongly deserve. \nAfter the webcast\, join us on Maddie’s Pet Forum to continue the discussion: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPain \nThis webinar will be recorded and has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nREGISTER HERE https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister \nPresenter\nFranklin D. McMillan\, DVM\, served as the director of well-being studies at Best Friends Animal Society from 2007 to 2020. In that role\, his research involved the quality of life\, mental health\, and emotional well-being of animals who had endured hardship\, adversity\, and psychological trauma. He has published in scientific journals the first studies of dogs rescued from puppy mills\, hoarding situations\, and abusive environments. The work has included the psychological health of puppies born sold through pet stores or over the Internet. Before coming to Best Friends\, he was in private practice for 23 years as well as clinical professor of medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. McMillan is board- certified in the veterinary specialties of small animal internal medicine and animal welfare. He lectures worldwide and is the author of the textbook Mental Health and Well-Being in Animals (now in its 2nd edition) and a book for the general public titled Unlocking the Animal Mind. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastSocialPainRegister

SUMMARY:Hybrid Conference - 10/7/22 to 10/8/22 - The Gathering: A Virtual CARE Convening - CARE (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:THE GATHERING is a place to listen to proximate leaders identify their barriers and share their successes to create equitable solutions. The in-person conference takes place on Friday\, October 7 from 9am – 4pm ET and Saturday October 8 (in-person only) from 9am – 2pm ET in Philadelphia. \nWant to join virtually? You can get an all day pass to watch the Friday presentations at The Gathering virtually for just $35. \nThe Gathering is an introduction to the Human and Animal Well-being framework in which CARE’s mission-driven work is illustrated. As such\, we’ve designed a day that focuses on community wisdom and the unique perspective of Black\, Indigenous\, and other people of color identified as proximate leaders through our CARE Center program. \nCARE views this as a great opportunity for human and animal well-being stakeholders to do some deep listening and take this knowledge to contribute to opportunities with individuals and communities who lack direct engagement or investment by animal welfare. By sharing the work of people of color\, who are historically underfunded\, we hope to elevate and inspire continued collaboration and support. \nWEBSITE LINK:  http://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-gathering-a-virtual-care-convening-tickets-425035932917
