SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/4/22 - Building a Leadership Culture - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Some organizational gurus contend that culture is the primary job of the CEO and leadership team because all other pillars of a great organization rest upon a healthy culture. A neglected aspect of building an effective and dynamic culture is leadership\, especially at the middle supervisory level of the organization. It is a dangerous fallacy that leadership acumen is only necessary at the top. Building a leadership culture begins by recognizing and communicating the expectation of leadership at every level of the organization\, coupled with the training and support required to develop each person’s leadership skills. \nThis session will explore the leader’s responsibility for culture paired with the need for an ongoing effort to provide leadership training and support. Tracy will explain his approach to leadership development in creating a Leadership Academy at each organization he led. The Leadership Academy is a multi-session approach to building leadership capabilities and capacity based on Tracy’s leadership model for the social sector\, Leadership From The Heart. \nThis live and recorded webinar is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \nThis webinar is part 1 in the 5-part A Great Place to Work series. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/50422-building-a-leadership-culture

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/10/22 - The Future Is Four: The Right Care - Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Offering the Right Care means animals are not left in dangerous circumstances to cause harm\, suffer\, or die because the shelter can’t admit them; nor are they are admitted to a crowded shelter when there are better options within the community. You’re doing this work because you want to serve animals and people in the shelter and in the community\, but in order to provide the best care\, you have to know—and make sure you’re operating within—your capacity for care. Within the shelter’s walls\, the Right Care encompasses staffing\, housing and programs to meet each animal’s basic needs. In this webinar\, Drs. Chumkee Aziz and Denae Wagner will share how to provide humane housing and match community need to community capacity and shelter services to ensure all animals receive the care that is right for them. \nThis webinar is part 3 of “The Future Is Four: The Right Care in the Right Place at the Right Time to the Right Outcome Right Place” series. Register once for these four sessions\, which will be recorded. \nThe webcast has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. \nPresenters\nDenae Wagner\, DVM\, MPVM\, Assistant Director and Chief Portalizer \nIn her work for the Koret Shelter Medicine Program\, Dr. Wagner has helped shelters from Florida to Vancouver. Her contributions have ranged from Capacity for Care (C4C) calculations and population health to full facility design consultations. After initially fashioning them by hand\, Dr. Wagner oversaw the design and manufacture of the Kat Portal for the Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Over 5\,000 of her hand-made and manufactured portals have been installed in animal shelters throughout North America and beyond\, earning Dr. Wagner the nickname\, The Portal Queen. The portals safely and cleanly couple pairs of existing cat cages\, transforming cramped housing into roomier double-compartment condos. Dr. Wagner’s current interests include evidence based shelter design and the effects of housing and the shelter environment on animal health and well-being. \nMehnaz (Chumkee) Aziz\, DVM\, Outreach Veterinarian \nChumkee obtained her DVM degree at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She then completed an internship at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC in 2013\, which included experience in anti-cruelty work and shelter medicine. Chumkee was a resident at the KSMP from 2013-2016.She headed the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative and served as Senior Director of Shelter Medicine Services at the ASPCA before returning to the KSMP in January\, 2022 as an outreach veterinarian. Her current interests include the role of community collaboration in mitigating pet homelessness\, proactive shelter population management\, and infectious disease prevention in shelters. \n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9UHVkuKcQbumXhwr-Y9puw

SUMMARY:Webinar - 5/10/22 - Proactive Responses to the Community’s Concerns: Successes in the Field for Today’s ACO’s - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:How many times have you received a call for service and you recognized the address before you even responded? This happens far too often. However\, how often are you trying a different approach to address the issue? If we want a different outcome\, we need to try different approaches. The community has come to rely upon the services provided by public health and animal welfare agencies. This is especially true with the recent pandemic affecting our communities. This session will focus on proactive ways Animal Welfare Organizations can address calls for service at their core. We will explore some new and innovative ways Volusia County Animal Services has been addressing common animal welfare issues in Daytona Beach\, Florida. \nThis webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. Visit the NACA training page for a complete list of future trainings. \nPresenter:\nBased out of Daytona Beach\, Florida\, Adam Leath is the Director of Volusia County Animal Services. He investigates and responds to situations involving animal victims of natural disasters and animal cruelty cases in Volusia County. Leath was formerly a Regional Director of the Field Investigations and Response Team at the ASPCA where he led one of the largest operations in ASPCA history with the seizure of over 1\,000 animals in August of 2016. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second-largest dogfighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is a courtesy Assistant Professor for the Department of Comparative\, Diagnostic\, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a Director on the Board of Directors for the National Animal Care and Control Association. Leath is a Past President of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 5/10/22 – Janis Bradley on 50 years of data about behavioral incompatibilities and dog relinquishment to shelters – UW and UC Davis Shelter Medicine Programs
DESCRIPTION:This upcoming Tuesday\, May 10th\, from 3-4 pm CST\, Janis Bradley\, Director of Communications and Publications at National Canine Research Council and the recent keynote speaker at the Big Dog Master Class\, will be presenting\, “Irreconcilable differences? Maybe not! A new look at 50 years of data about behavioral incompatibilities and dog relinquishment to shelters.” \nAt the following rounds on May 24th we will be discussing the topic further in breakout groups and as a large group. After rounds on May 10th we will share a recording for those who cannot join us live so you can still join us for the discussion on May 24th. \nDescription: An examination of 12 peer reviewed papers on pet relinquishment\, 6 on dogs who were returned after being adopted\, and 14 on the behaviors of dogs living in homes revealed no strong evidence supporting the prevailing belief that behavioral incompatibilities are a primary risk factor for owners surrendering their pets to shelters. Only 2 studies (one from the 1990’s and the other published in 2000) in the literature contained actual risk analyses of specific behaviors. Neither found strong evidence of behavioral risk factors. Dogs living in homes do not appear to be behaviorally different from dogs living in shelters. Moreover\, the studies on dogs living in homes revealed no consensus regarding behaviors that owners considered problematic or how any of them affected their satisfaction with the relationship. When combined with the low validity levels and poor predictive ability of battery style behavior evaluations commonly administered in shelters\, the relinquishment literature makes the use of such instruments highly questionable. What does this mean for adoption policies and placement procedures in shelters? \nPresenter: \nJanis Bradley\, M.A.\nDirector of Communications & Publications \nJanis holds a B.A. in Philosophy and a Masters in English. She first pursued a career as a college teacher\, counselor\, and administrator. Leaving academia\, she then took up professionally her passion for the human-canine relationship. From 2000 through 2009\, Janis trained more than 400 professional pet dog trainers. \nJanis is the co-author of the articles: “No better than flipping a coin: Reconsidering canine behavior evaluations in animal shelters” \, “Who is minding the bibliography? Daisy chaining\, dropped leads\, and other bad behavior using examples from the dog bite literature\,” and “Defaming Rover: Error-Based Latent Rhetoric in the Medical Literature on Dog Bites”. She is also the author of Dogs Bite\, But Balloons and Slippers are More Dangerous (James and Kenneth)\, the complete guide to research on dog bites; Dog Bites: Problems and Solutions (Animals and Society Institute); and The Relevance of Breed in Selecting a Companion Dog (National Canine Research Council Vision Series). All of this comes from an abiding interest in finding the very best information about the remarkable relationship between dogs and people. She lives in California with her rescued Greyhounds. \nNational Shelter Medicine Rounds is held on the same Zoom link for every session: \nhttps://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396 \nOne tap mobile \n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC) \n+13126266799\,\,97442637396# US (Chicago) \nThis group is made up of shelter veterinarians\, shelter vet trainees\, and upper level shelter leadership.
