SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/30/24 - A Case Study – Animal Behaviour In Local Government: Proactive initiatives from the City of Charles Sturt - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:What do trainers\, animal management officers and dog owners have in common? A love of dogs and a need to understand animal behaviour. \nThis webinar provides a case study for the value of a collaboration between a trainer and a progressive\, proactive local government council in South Australia – the City of Charles Sturt.\nLocal government councils in Australia have legislative requirements and work extensively with their residents in order to promote responsible pet ownership. However\, it can be incredibly challenging for councils to educate the public in an area that\, let’s face it\, is rather boring to hear about. Dog owners aren’t lining up to learn about the laws for registration\, desexing\, microchipping or leash requirements\, and the educational messages can often be lost. \nAs a trainer working in local government\, Petra has been able to incorporate her understanding of animal behaviour and learning theory principles into some incredibly proactive\, informative community engagement initiatives\, including educational resources\, dog park design\, seminars and a ‘thank you’ campaign acknowledging responsible pet owners. \nThis presentation will explore how important animal management messages can be spread through an animal behaviour lens\, provide examples of where and how trainers can collaborate with local government agencies\, and showcase opportunities to share responsible pet ownership messages through their own work. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify opportunities to incorporate animal management messaging as part of your training curriculum\nIdentify opportunities to partner with local government in educational initiatives for their residents\n\nPresenter: Petra Edwards \nWEBSITE LINK: https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/webinars-events/webinars/a-case-study-animal-behaviour-in-local-government-proactive-initiatives-from-the-city-of-charles-sturt/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/5/24 - Using Innovative Alternatives to Incarceration and Recognizing the Role of Trauma in Violence Against Animals - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:The animal law movement has\, for the most part\, been successful in showing society that animal cruelty is a problem. Now\, a dynamic and evolving area of focus is creating targeted criminal justice outcomes to better help animal victims\, heal individuals who committed cruelty\, prevent future crimes against animals\, and build healthier and more resilient communities. This webinar will discuss innovative work that identifies alternatives to traditional sentencing practices\, which appropriately and accurately address underlying causes of animal cruelty\, provide fairness to all parties involved in animal cruelty\, and that work to curb the rate of future cruelty. Specifically\, this webinar will discuss the role trauma can play as an underlying cause to cruelty\, as well as methods to address and heal such trauma so it does not perpetuate animal cruelty in the future. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/using-innovative-alternatives-to-incarceration-and-recognizing-the-role-of-trauma-in-violence-against-animals/

SUMMARY:Online Event - 11/5/24 - All Call: Integrating Social Work Into Shelters - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:Join your colleagues at noon on November 5 for a conversation with veterinary social worker Raquel Bernaldo\, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) Community Services Manager\, and Deja Johnson\, FAAS Community Services Lead. Submit your questions for Raquel and Deja in advance. \nAbout the presentation: At Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS)\, we are an open-admission shelter and a community resource dedicated to keeping pets and people together. Our presentation will explore FAAS’s Healthy Pets Healthy People programs and our shift from traditional charity models to mutual aid\, where we focus on trust\, community partnerships\, and recognizing pet owners as the experts on their animals. Programs include free pet food\, no-cost vaccines\, the Skyla Fund for veterinary assistance\, spay/neuter vouchers\, microchipping\, and up to 90 days of emergency boarding. \nMutual aid moves beyond charity’s limitations by eliminating conditions like income verification\, fees\, adherence to timeliness\, etc. and focusing on building connection\, trust\, and safety. We’ve redefined volunteer roles\, differentiating between the shelter’s animal care expertise and our department’s role in supporting pet owners. This shift required intentional work to reestablish leadership\, align programs\, and build collaborative partnerships with local businesses\, veterinary clinics\, grooming services\, and social service providers. \nThe presentation will feature a conversational dialogue\, supported by slides\, to illustrate how FAAS has created a sustainable\, humane model for community-based animal welfare. \nAbout the All Call: The All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other. Popular topics include initiatives that create a more inclusive culture for both staff and community\, programs that keep pets with their people\, industry trends\, research studies\, as well as the hard stuff\, like what’s not working or what is particularly difficult during times of scarcity. The call is a mix of presentations\, storytelling\, open discussion\, and Q&A time. \nThe All Call is hosted by California for All team members Allison Cardona\, Nadia Oseguera\, and Ivy Ruiz\, and is enriched by rotating facilitators. You only need to register one time. Calls are sometimes recorded; recap emails with supplemental resources are sent post-call. \nRegister here: https://tinyurl.com/all-call

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/13/24 - Neonatal and Early Kittenhood Emergencies - National Kitten Coalition
DESCRIPTION:The National Kitten Coalition is presenting a free RACE® CE  webinar! \nWe want to say thank you to our veterinary professional community!\nMark your calendars for a FREE Webinar approved by the AAVSB for 1.00 credit of live\, interactive RACE® CE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/nurses in jurisdictions that recognize RACE® approval. \nThis webinar is open to all veterinary professionals. Please share with any of your colleagues who might be interested in attending\, need CE credits\, or simply love kittens. \n\nDate/Time: Wednesday\, November 13\, 2024\, at 7:30 PM EST\nTitle: Neonatal and Early Kittenhood Emergencies: Be ready to save the next one that walks through your door\nSpeaker: Emily Coleman\, DVM\n\nWebinar Overview\nKittens are very fragile beings that require immediate and intensive care in the face of a medical emergency. Conditions that will leave an adult cat only mildly ill or uncomfortable can quickly become life-threatening for a neonatal or young kitten. Neonatology and early kittenhood are often overlooked topics during veterinary medical education and continuing education opportunities\, leaving both the recent graduate and the seasoned practitioner without the necessary knowledge of how to handle various emergencies commonly seen in kittens. \nThis talk will discuss how to recognize\, diagnose and make treatment recommendations for several types of emergencies including ocular\, respiratory\, gastrointestinal\, parasitic\, congenital and traumatic. These emergencies\, while varying in levels of urgency as well as ease of treatment\, all often involve a kitten that is just days to weeks old. \nAs the nation adopts a no-kill outlook to animal rescue\, it is only expected that more kittens will be seen in veterinary hospitals\, making it very important for veterinary practitioners to be empowered to have frank\, honest conversations with their clients on treatment recommendations and prognosis\, whether they be rescue organizations or good Samaritans of the general public. As early veterinary intervention is almost always required\, this tiny\, vulnerable population deserves a chance to survive by being evaluated and treated appropriately. \nSession objectives: After attending this virtual lecture an individual should be able to: \n\nIdentify the most common neonatal and early kittenhood emergencies seen in practice\nConfidently treat these neonatal and early kittenhood emergencies\nUnderstand the critical importance of complete supportive care for the neonate and kitten during an emergency\nCreate a kitten emergency kit for use in her hospital\n\nRegister today for this FREE webinar! \nWEBSITE LINK: https://kittencoalition.org/event/neonatal-and-early-kittenhood-emergencies/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/14/24 - Maddie’s Insights: Beyond "Doing Better" - Using Behavior Data to Monitor Well-Being in Cats - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Safeguarding the well-being of cats is essential to the mission of any responsible animal shelter. Environmental enrichment and behavior modification are often key to this goal. Measuring response to these interventions is essential to ensure strategies are successful. This webinar will present 4 ordinal rating scales designed to evaluate different expressions of cat behavior/welfare on a 0–5 scale (modified Fear\, Anxiety\, and Stress score; Response to Petting score; Participation in Play score; and Food Intake Summary score) that have excellent interobserver agreement and reliability\, and a few other tools to describe behavior in a quantitative way. These tools are exceptionally useful to evaluate the response individual cats have to specific interventions\, make decisions about which interventions should be tried first by looking at what was effective in cases presenting similarly in the past\, and evaluating the efficacy of different interventions across a population of similar cats in a research project. \nRegister: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording after the webcast. \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. SUMMARY:Online Event - 12/3/24 - All Call: Fighting Hunger with Pet Food Pantries and Community Collaboration - California for All Animals
DESCRIPTION:At 12 p.m. PT on December 3\, join Jorge Delgado and Cel Jimenez from the Humane Society of Sonoma County for our last All Call of the year. They will discuss their Community Action Team initiatives\, including how they sustain their pet food pantry\, engage human services agencies\, and more! \nPet food pantries are becoming part of animal shelter community programming to prevent animal surrenders and help people in need feed their pet companions. Although these pantries provide much-needed relief for the community\, sustaining them long-term is challenging and stressful due to the lack of support from hunger relief organizations like food banks. It is time to raise awareness regarding pets’ food insecurity and advocate for our pet’s guardians in need. Please join us to discuss strategies to build a sustainable pet food pantry and how to create support among food banks and pet food pantries to fight hunger in our communities. \nAbout the All Call \nThe All Call is a twice-monthly\, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other.
