DESCRIPTION:Program overview:  This series of educational modules will prepare participants to manage playgroups using the LIMA ethical standard and use conspecific interactions for behavior modification. \nCohort structure: Learners will be invited to join a cohort that will meet virtually for four months via the Litmos LMS platform.  Each cohort will be invited to twice-monthly (bi-weekly) hour-long\, live meetings via Zoom webinar so that questions can be answered live.  The bi-weekly meetings will feature video analysis and discussion of relevant topics. \nRegistration process: Individuals interested in joining each cohort must submit an “e-mail of interest” which includes the organization to which you belong to the executive director\, Mara Velez requesting to be added to the upcoming cohort. SUMMARY:Webinar - 8/22/22 - Dog Playgroups Part 1: The Why - Getting2Zero
DESCRIPTION:Learn about all the ways in which Dogs Playing For Life Playgroups are transforming shelters all across the USA. \nIn this first of three webinars\, we will present powerful examples of how playgroups can not only enhance the quality of life for your shelter dogs\, but how focusing on their quality of life through enrichment can lead to game-changing benefits to your shelter’s everyday operations. \nAttendees will get to view dynamic video examples and impactful data and experiences from some of the nearly 300 shelters that have embraced the power of letting shelter dogs play! \nThis webinar is one of three that will be delivered over the coming months. \nTo learn more about DPFL go to https://dogsplayingforlife.com \nPresenter: Aimee Sadler \nAimee is the Founder and CEO of Dogs Playing for Life (DPFL). With 35 years of experience working with multiple species in varying venues\, Aimee has become an internationally recognized trainer and speaker specializing in shelter programs that enhance quality of life and reduce canine euthanasia in animal shelters. The cornerstone of DPFL’s programming is our Every Dog\, Every Day!\, an out-of-kennel enrichment model that is in increasing demand and has been introduced to over 300 shelters across the U.S. and Canada. DPFL’s measured programming is contributing to safer shelter environments by reducing dog-human bites while increasing canine lifesaving at an average rate of 4% at participating shelters. Starting in 2017\, dogs most at risk of behavioral euthanasia can get a second chance at DPFL’s Canine Center Florida\, an advanced training and behavior care center with an overall save rate of 86 percent. \nAimee has regularly presented at animal welfare and professional dog training conferences such as HSUS’ Animal Expo\, Best Friend’s Annual Conferences\, Masters in Behavior Conference\, and the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) Conferences. DPFL was the inaugural recipient of Petco Foundation’s Love in Action Award. In 2016\, DPFL was featured in Episode 4 of the PBS television series\, “Shelter Me.” \nAimee is a proud recipient of the Henry Bergh Leadership Award and the Maddie’s Hero Award and has been inducted into the Members Hall of Fame for the IACP. Aimee currently resides in Longmont\, CO\, with her husband and family. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.g2z.org.au/g2z-webinars-and-online-events.html

SUMMARY:Online Event - 8/24/22 - Maddie's Candid Conversation with Elijah Brice-Middleton - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a brand-new season of open\, informal 30-minute conversations and Q+A with influential BIPOC leaders in our field. You will be inspired by each speaker’s pathway to promoting equity\, inclusion and diversity in their daily work. \nIn our Season 2 premiere\, Elijah Brice-Middleton\, Director at Plainfield Area Humane Society (PAHS) in New Jersey\, reveals the values and skills he uses to face challenges of being\, in his words\, “a brown face in a white world.” Maddie’s Fund Executive Leadership Team member Mary Ippoliti-Smith hosts the discussion and Q+A. \nGrowing up in a household that cared for a menagerie of dogs\, cats\, snakes\, monkeys\, tarantulas and a bird named Diablo\, Elijah learned early on to love all living creatures. That passion drove him to undergraduate degrees in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. On his way to a PhD in ecology\, he realized something was missing.  After a stint in the financial technologies sector on Wall Street\, a happy\, accidental interview led him into the field of animal well-being – and straight into the kennels of Animal Care Centers of New York.  Now\, as a leader at PAHS\, he advocates cultivating the talents of his team so they have what they need to excel as professionals. \nAfterwards\, continue the conversation with Elijah on Maddie’s Pet Forum: https://maddies.fund/candidconvoElijahBriceMiddleton \nThe program will be recorded and made available on Maddie’s University for continuing education credit for both CAWA and NACA.\n#Diversity\,Equity\,InclusionandJustice \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYudeyrrz0rEtDN1lxqOKJTMdzXAbcF11gA

DESCRIPTION:Most people would agree that we’d like our dogs to have the ability to be zen; to chill out and relax when the situation calls for it. In addition\, we’d like them to think before they act. Mindless reactivity can be difficult to live with and manage in our dogs. \nIn this presentation Dr. Deb Jones is going to discuss her views on zen and the concept of impulse control. She will talk about the common usage of such terms as well as her working definitions\, and issues with the terminology and application. \nShe will talk about the advantages of teaching a dog to be zen and demonstrate specific exercises that can encourage thought before action. In particular\, Deb will focus on both the art and the science of zen work. A clear understanding of the major underlying scientific principles will be very helpful to excellent application and execution of the techniques. \nDeb will discuss the importance of designated markers\, introduce her foundation “bowl” games\, and demonstrate the place/drop/toss technique to build fluency. She will talk about developing control around food and toys\, and also consider broader generalization issues and applications. \nNote: This webinar was originally included as a presentation in the Lemonade Conference\, but has not previously run as a standalone webinar. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Online Event - 8/29/22 - Saving Luna: A Case Study on Rabbit Aggression - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Emily came across a desperate post in a local rabbit rescue Facebook group\, begging someone to take a beautiful rabbit who was scheduled to be euthanized the next day for aggression. She instantly responded to take the case pro bono and would work with anyone who took on this bunny. Shortly after\, Emily received a friend request from the person who was dropping everything to pick up Luna\, and they immediately got to work. As Emily watched Luna throw herself\, growling and snarling\, at the fence separating them\, she wondered if she had bitten off more than she could chew! \nLuna’s aggression is more severe than any case Emily had experienced in her career working with rabbits. Luna’s triggers ranged from everything to the sound of a person approaching to the appearance of food falling into her pen. Anything associated with human interaction was met with a flying leap\, a growl\, and a fierce bite. While Luna’s clear stress and discomfort were a main focus of their efforts\, Emily was equally concerned with giving Luna’s humans the tools to manage her safely\, without (any more) bloodshed! Carefully managing Luna’s triggers\, mindful counterconditioning\, and enrichment were the tools we used to gradually build trust. Luna began to relax\, and so could everyone around her! \nLuna’s story is not just her own\, but the story of many rabbits who are euthanized in shelters for behavior issues. Rabbits whose issues are often created by the environment. This presentation will be useful to anyone who cares for rabbits in any capacity. \nLearning Objectives \n\nThe importance of stress management in aggression cases\nMinimizing triggers in an environment where everything seems to be a trigger\nDeveloping safe ways to interact with and care for an extremely over-threshold animal\nDirect juxtaposition of force-free strategies and force-based common methods in handling rabbit aggression\nManaging learned aggression in bunnies\n\nAbout the Presenter \nEmily earned her BS in Animal Science\, with a specialization in Equine Science\, from the University of Florida. Since 2010\, she has been providing professional behavior assistance to pets and their people. She completed two internships\, one at ZooTampa working primarily with Florida Manatees\, and one at Clearwater Marine Aquarium\, working with dolphins\, otters\, and pelicans. While in school\, she worked with Class Act for Dogs\, in Gainesville\, Florida\, under Dee Zurberg\, an accomplished trainer who emphasized not only kindness to dogs\, but kindness to their people as well. Since then\, she has continued her career in the zoo field working with a variety of species including tigers\, otters\, Flying foxes\, gibbons\, and as well as various avian\, aquatic\, and reptile species. Her main focus\, however\, is caring for orangutans. While not working at the zoo\, she has spent years working with dogs as a group class instructor and behavior consultant at Courteous Canine\, Inc. This led her to create Small Animal Resources\, a place for guardians of small pets to find accurate\, reliable information and to highlight the behavioral needs of small mammals. She has published articles for the Pet Professional Guild and the International Association for Animal Behavior Consultants on various topics related to rabbit care and behavior. She has presented at various conferences\, workshops\, and webinars\, for both the Pet Professional Guild\, the Animal Behavior Management Alliance\, and the Florida Association of Zoos and Aquariums. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4793641

SUMMARY:Webinar - 9/1/22 - An overview of key aspects of the puppy education literature & possible implications for trainers - Dog iBox (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Our aim as trainers and behaviourists is to support puppy education to minimize the risk of unwanted behaviour developing and maximize successful adaptation to a modern human environment. Over the past few decades the literature regarding puppy rearing and puppy education has grown. Although many questions are still to be answered\, there is information available which can help inform our practice. This includes information which can support best practice in puppy classes as well as the advice we give owners and breeders regarding raising their puppies. This talk will examine some of the available literature from the perspective of what it might mean for what we do in practice. \nPresenter: Dr. Helen Zulch MRCVS \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.dog-ibox.com/en/market/catalog/live-webinars/an-overview-of-key-aspects-of-the-puppy-education-literature-possible-implications-for-trainers.html

But this talk will help you understand better where your dog is coming from and help you think through the many different puzzle pieces that made her who she is. \nPresenter: Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD \nNote: This webinar is back by popular demand.
