SUMMARY:Webinar - 11/28/23 - Here\, There\, and Everywhere: How Harm Perpetrated in the Home Impacts the Entire Community - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Participants will learn of the bi-directional relationship between community violence and family violence. Topics such as attachment/internal working models\, adverse childhood experiences\, and toxic stress effects will be discussed with an emphasis on how community violence impacts these critical mental health components. \nParticipants will also learn from case study examples of serial killers and recent mass shooting incidents of the connections between harm experienced in the home and acts of violence in the community. SUMMARY:Webinar – 12/1/23 – Fancy Footwork: Practical Handling and Training Solutions for the Entire Shelter – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:While playgroups are the foundation of our shelter training program\, teaching shelter teams how to implement a generalized\, effective\, and enjoyable way to handle and train their dogs is another essential aspect of our canine programming! In this webinar\, we will teach the fundamentals of our “Fancy Footwork” techniques that focus on achieving good leash manners through the use of your FEET instead of your hands. Come learn this unique and highly effective approach that promotes dogs happily walking softly by your side\, offering tons of eye contact\, and wowing adopters! This new approach to leash work will enhance your handling skills and increase your ability to train ALL dogs\, even those that are highly aroused\, stressed\, fearful\, or not motivated by food\, all in an effort to improve quality of life and lifesaving for dogs living in shelters. \nAdditionally\, we will teach you how to implement our critically important kennel routines. The kennel areas of our nation’s shelters can be one of the most challenging and distressing environments that dogs–and their handlers–ever face. DPFL kennel routines have been developed and taught to shelters across the country in an effort to combat these challenges and to provide safer and more successful ways for dogs and people to maneuver through the kennels. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8KVNshjUQu-Z6_vdVaqqgQ#/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/5/23 - Crucial Cues Your Shelter Dogs\, Volunteers & Adopters Should Know - 'Sit' Not Included with Leo Taylor - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Shelters often market dog volunteer positions as ‘dog walking’ opportunities but there’s an argument to be made that the physical exercise a shelter dog is receiving is not nearly the most important piece of the puzzle. The adage that a ‘tired dog is a happy dog’ has long been bemoaned by qualified dog professionals who are aware of the bigger wellness picture. The expectations placed on shelter dogs are A LOT for them to process both mentally and emotionally\, and without conscientious volunteer training that prioritizes consistency and predictability they become susceptible to confusion\, frustration\, punishment\, and behavioral decline. Similarly\, transferring these simple skills to the dog’s adopter can make or break their ability to bond while transitioning into a new home. \nTraining and being a conscientious dog volunteer involves so much more than simply taking a dog on a walk and this webinar aims to highlight skills that will benefit nearly every dog during their shelter stay. It will not only help volunteers learn how to effectively execute the skills included\, but will also emphasize the multifaceted benefits to both dog and human when becoming fluent in said skills. Our volunteers are here to help\, so let’s be sure we’re providing them with the tools they need to make interactions with shelter dogs as stress-free as possible for both ends of the leash! \nAbout the Presenter: Leo “LT” Taylor has worked and volunteered in San Francisco shelters for 13 years. As they have told the hundreds of dog volunteers they’ve trained\, it’s rarely the case that a dog would choose to be in even the ‘nicest’ shelter\, so it’s our job to bring the light back into their lives during an otherwise difficult and taxing chapter. LT is currently a senior in the prestigious Academy for Dog Trainers and is thrilled to be serving on the PPG Shelter & Rescue Division committee. They’re in the midst of launching their own training business – Little King Trash Dog Behavior Consulting and Training – named after their deaf shelter dog\, Lemmy\, who was found evading people and digging through trash cans in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. LT believes every shelter dog deserves patience\, respect\, and an understanding of why they are the way they are by the people entrusted with their care. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-5469631

SUMMARY:Webinar – 12/6/23 – DPFL’s Approach to On-Leash Reactivity – Dogs Playing for Life
DESCRIPTION:Reactivity on the part of dogs living in shelters is a rampant issue that can contribute to behavioral deterioration\, increased length of stay\, and even loss of life. From a misdiagnosis of “aggression” to dogs whose reactive behavior escalates to problematic and potentially unsafe levels\, learning how to help dogs suffering from reactivity issues is a crucial need shared by our entire industry. \nWhile this webinar can be attended as a standalone course\, we will build on our Fancy Footwork approach to handling and training to offer practical training\, handling\, and safety solutions to on-leash reactivity for dogs living in shelters. \nThis is a 1.5-hour presentation followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will NOT be recorded and is scheduled on EASTERN TIME. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uI1UvBOKS0Gj0MYiJa3_qw#/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/6/23 - Brave Spaces: Creating a Workplace that Truly Fosters Inclusion - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Leaders who create work environments that fully support diverse identities have to be not only safe but brave. Inclusive organizations build cultures of psychological safety\, in which all members feel safe and encouraged to share their honest ideas\, opinions\, and concerns without fear of being ridiculed or punished. When we have that kind of safety we can build brave spaces\, in which individuals can engage in courageous conversations about uncomfortable topics\, can dissent respectfully\, and can challenge systems that impede progress toward diversity\, equity\, and inclusion for all. \nIn this session\, we will explore some of the nuances between safe spaces and brave spaces\, and identify skills and actions for leaders to create thriving environments that are both safe and brave. Leaders who wish to establish an inclusive work environment will especially benefit from this webinar. \nPresenter: Jasmin M. Robinson\, Director of DEI Initiatives\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for: \n\n1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit\n1 NACA CE\n1 CE towards ACO CE requirements per Ch. 829 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/12-06-23

SUMMARY:National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 12/12/23 – A Discussion of Canine Respiratory Disease and Its Management in Shelters: What's Old\, New\, Tried\, and True? – UW Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds Tuesday\, December 12th. \nNational Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration. While primarily intended for shelter veterinarians\, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls! \nAs news and social media continue to circulate information about a new severe respiratory disease in dogs\, we’d like to offer the next National Rounds as an opportunity for informal\, open discussion\, questions\, sharing observations and (maybe) some answers. Please join us Tuesday December 12th to go over what’s been in the news\, share experiences and review foundational practices that reduce the risk of disease spread in shelters no matter the pathogen. \nThis meeting will be devoted entirely to attendee discussion and will not be recorded. \nWe hope to have an open discussion\, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded\, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not. \nIf you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list\,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu. \nPlease use the following Zoom link to access National Rounds calls: https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396 \nMeeting ID: 974 4263 7396\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,97442637396# US (Washington DC)\n+13052241968\,\,97442637396# US \nZoom Meeting Link:  https://uwmadison.zoom.us/j/97442637396

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/12/23 - The Roundtable: Liability Insurance Challenges - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Animal sheltering organizations face growing challenges with acquiring affordable liability insurance coverage.  As the number of claims (including some in the seven-figure range) continues to rise\, even those shelters with solid track records are paying the price.  Serious dog bites seem to be at the epicenter of this insurance crisis.  Animal welfare organizations are struggling to find coverage at all\, and when they do find it the cost can be prohibitive. \nIn this discussion co-hosted by CalAnimals and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement\, we will have a candid conversation with two representatives from the insurance industry who will share the big picture of what – from their inside perspective – is causing insurance challenges and what organizations can do to mitigate their risks and improve their chances of securing coverage. \nThe Roundtable Panel: \n\nDavid Denniston\, Director of Risk Management\, McNeil and Company\nDamien Zillas\, Compliance Coverage Counsel\, Nonprofits Insurance Alliance\n\nModerated by: \n\nJim Tedford\, CAWA\, President & CEO\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement\nJill Tucker\, CAWA\, CEO\, California Animal Welfare Association\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/RT-12-12-23

SUMMARY:Webinar - 12/14/23 - Improving Canine Quality of Life through Efficient\, Low-Cost Dental Care - ASPCAPro
DESCRIPTION:What to do about canine dental health is one of the hottest topics in accessible veterinary care today. While everyone agrees that all dogs would benefit from regular dental procedures\, the cost of dental care (including digital dental radiography) is well beyond the reach of many pet owners. Many shelter and community clinics provide some dental care to patients but often do so with guilt and conflict about not being able to provide the extensive care needed (or even worry about practicing below the perceived standard of care). \nIn this webinar\, we will present results from an ASPCA-funded study that investigated the impact of dental cleaning on the quality of life of canine patients. Additionally\, we investigated how an empirical treatment plan (pulling any obvious loose or severely diseased teeth) compared to recommendations made from a blinded radiograph review. Finally\, we documented the incidence of retained roots for dogs who had extractions and followed these dogs forward in time for 6 months. This project aimed to answer the question of whether or not providing some care was better than providing no care for patients with end-stage canine dental disease. As many dogs ideally need dental procedures as often as every year\, it is essential to come up with an affordable approach. \nTakeaways \n\nUnderstand current controversies around canine dental care.\nBe able to describe strategies to make dentistry procedures more efficient.\nDiscuss improving communication around dental care using spectrum of care approaches.\n\nCredits\nThis program has been RACE approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.aspcapro.org/training/webinar/improving-canine-quality-life-through-efficient-low-cost-dental-care
