SUMMARY:California Shelters - CASCAR Weekly COVID-19 Check-In Call - link in CA Group Activity Feed
DESCRIPTION:Posting:  6/19/20 \nToday is Juneteenth\, also known as Freedom Day\, a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. This year\, many Americans are observing the holiday by not only reflecting how far we’ve come\, but by taking stock of how far we have left to go in the fight against inequality. \nEarlier this month our program shared our commitment to doing that soul-searching work with you\, our sheltering community\, including the specific commitment to engage in anti-racist learning and to create a space for you to learn and share alongside us if you so desire. \nNext week on Tuesday June 23rd at 10:00 am\, KSMP is hosting our first call to talk about what this moment in our history could mean for us in California animal sheltering should we rise to meet this national call to action with open minds and hearts.  \nJose Ocano  (erstwhile Pacific Region Director and now Senior Director of Culture and Talent for Best Friends) and Dr. Jyothi Robertson will be joining us to facilitate the discussion. Also joining us will be special guest James Evans\, long time animal welfare leader and president of Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE). \nIf you are interested in joining the conversation\, please use the zoom link below. \nhttps://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nHope to see you there! \nTeam KSMP

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/23/20 - Revolutionizing Your Data Entry Game to Save More Lives\, Money\, & More! - PetPoint
DESCRIPTION:The animal welfare industry now knows that data-driven decision-making is advantageous\, but did you know that efficient data entry can also have tremendous benefits? When faced with choosing between devoting time and resources to animal care versus a seemingly mundane task like entering data\, the choice seems obvious. However\, modernizing our data entry methods and prioritizing real-time data entry creates efficiencies that allow shelter staff to spend more time caring for animals and increase organizational success. \nIn this webinar\, members from our Pethealth Team and animal welfare leaders will highlight how technological efficiencies and updates increase staff morale\, customer satisfaction\, and lifesaving impact. You will also learn how paper-lite operations are investments in emergency preparedness and environmental responsibility and how to foster team buy-in. In this post Covid-19 world of economic and social distancing challenges\, efficiency matters now more than ever. \nREGISTRATION LINK:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8584895937756743440

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/24/20 - De-Escalation: Dealing with Difficult People - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:People are difficult for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons are universal and apply to all people (like the responses of those who feel threatened or injured – remember: hurt people hurt other people).  Some reasons are particular to a group of people\, like those who externalize the causes of their misfortune onto others\, or people who have a mental illness like paranoia.  Some reasons for being difficult are particular to a person\, like an individual who has a difficult personality style. \nThis webinar will consider skills that can be used daily to de-escalate those who are escalating or at risk of escalating. We will consider ways to preemptively recognize\, manage\, and resolve conflictual encounters. We will discuss: \n\nSelf-assessments to identify the personal triggers that can pull us into the escalation cycle\nSkills to recognize and assess impending conflict\nHow to implement strategies to transform conflicts into reasonably manageable social encounters\n\nThis program (both live and recorded) has been approved for: \n\n1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit\n1 CE  by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for Texas Animal Control Officers\n\nThis session is part five of the five-part Going Through Hell? Keep Going! webinar series. \n\n\nByron Greenberg\, Ph.D.\, MPH\, LCP\nLicensed Clinical Psychologist; Diplomate in Police Psychology\, SPCP; Police and Emergency Services Psychologist\nDr. Byron Greenberg is a licensed clinical psychologist who holds graduate degrees from Loma Linda University and Johns Hopkins University.  His focus as a clinician has been in the area of high stress professionals such as law enforcement and other first responders\, nurses\, and teachers.  He therefore works with people who are suffering from depression\, anxiety\, relationship concerns\, addictions\, crisis\, and adjustment to trauma.  His approach is a blend of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. He is focused on the personal experience of his clients\, the way they interpret those experiences and how those interpretations effect their relationships with others and themselves. Dr. Greenberg has been licensed in the Commonwealth as a psychologist since January of 2001. He is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia State University. \nVisit The AAWA Website to Register:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/062420-de-escalation-dealing-with-difficult-people#tab-product_tab_overview

It means there is space for you in the ICU.” – Dr. Scott Weese \nRe-opening shelters and services brings the risk of COVID-19 resurgence. A holistic strategy is needed to implement new measures and change the internal culture so that staff understand and buy in to this prolonged “new normal.” The Toronto Humane Society’s new strategy\, designed to keep staff and public safe\, provide a roadmap for reopening that can be customized for shelters and clinics everywhere. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, June 24 at 12n Pacific / 3pm Eastern for a presentation and Q&A with Million Cat Challenge co-founder Dr. Julie Levy and Dr. Linda Jacobson and panelists from Toronto Humane Society. \nThis webinar will be recorded. \nREGISTER NOW \nMaddie’s Fund® has applied for advanced approval of Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \n\n\n \nAbout Dr. Linda Jacobson\, DVM\nSenior Manager of Shelter Medicine Advancement\, Toronto Humane Society\nDr. Linda Jacobson is Senior Manager of Shelter Medicine Advancement at Toronto Humane Society. She has a strong interest in infectious diseases (especially preventing them!) and has lovingly nurtured the infection control protocol at THS for the past 10 years. This is a sometimes thankless but ultimately exceptionally rewarding part of her job. \n\n\n  \n\n\n \nAbout Dr. Julie Levy\, DVM\, PhD\, DACVIM\, DABVP\nFran Marino Endowed Professor of Shelter Medicine\, Maddies® Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida\nDr. Julie Levy is the Fran Marino Professor of Shelter Medicine Education at the University of Florida\, where she focuses on the health and welfare of animals in shelters\, feline infectious diseases\, and humane alternatives for cat population control. She founded Operation Catnip\, a nonprofit university-based community cat trap-neuter-return program that has spayed\, neutered\, and vaccinated more than 65\,000 cats in Gainesville since 1998. In 2008\, she joined Dr. Cynda Crawford to found Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine\, an educational and discovery initiative with a global impact on the care of homeless animals. Having studied Animal Science before her travels\, and with a broad background in client services\, she combined these two passions to join the team at the THS as the Administrative Manager of Admissions and Public Veterinary Service. What drives her in her work is the desire to support clients in providing affordable care for their animals\, along with alternative options to surrender where possible. She currently shares her home with a senior Husky mix named Hercules. \n\n\n  \n\n\n \nPhil Nichols\, RVT\, CAWA\nChief Operating Officer\, Toronto Humane Society\nBeginning as a veterinary technician with a strong passion for animal welfare\, Phil quickly rose through Toronto Humane Society’s ranks after leading the development and expansion of their Public Veterinary Services (a program arm that now serves more than 12\,000 animals annually). SUMMARY:Online Event - 6/25/20 - Live From the Ranch - Ken Ramirez with Theresa McKeon - TAGteach - Using Positive Reinforcement with Humans to Influence Behavior - Karen Pryor Academy
DESCRIPTION:LIVE FROM THE RANCH\n\nJoin Ken Ramirez\, KPCT’s Chief Training Officer\, for a free hour-long virtual event live from The Ranch on Thursday\, June 25 at 12:00 pm (PT). Ken will be joined by Theresa McKeon to talk TAGteach and the myriad of applications of this invaluable teaching tool. Your TAG point is… tune in! \nKen Ramirez \n\n\nKen is the EVP and Chief Training Officer at Karen Pryor Clicker Training\, co-leading the company with Aaron Clayton. Ken oversees the vision for\, and development of\, training education programs. You will usually find Ken teaching at a ClickerExpo conference\, leading a course at the Karen Pryor National Training Center (The Ranch)\, or teaching one of the Karen Pryor Academy courses. \nA 40+ year veteran of animal care and training\, Ken is a biologist and behaviorist who has supervised the development care and training of more than 40\,000 species. He has worked with organizations across the globe to improve animal training\, program effectiveness\, and animal health and welfare. Ken’s diverse body of contributions includes designing and implementing conservation projects for elephant protection and spearheading projects to train everything from komodo dragons to butterflies. Ken’s extensive canine work includes working with trainers\, organizations\, and federal and state agencies on training procedures for topics including aggression\, search-and-rescue\, and scent detection. \nKen has written/edited two successful books\, taught at a major university\, hosted two successful seasons of the television series Talk to the Animals\, and was EVP of animal care and training at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. When he’s not doing cool stuff with animals and people\, you might find Ken at a NY theater or at any movie screening. \n\nTheresa McKeon \nAfter more than 30 years as a national-level gymnastics coach\, Theresa was determined to find a way to speed up skill acquisition for her athletes while simultaneously decreasing stress and fear in the learning environment. Her search for behaviorally sound techniques\, clean instructions\, and the proper timing of feedback and reinforcement\, led to the development of the TAGteach methodology. Theresa teamed with Joan Orr\, Beth Wheeler\, and Aaron Clayton and Karen Pryor of Karen Pryor Clicker Training to found TAGteach International\, LLC. \nSince then\, TAGteach has evolved into an entire teaching protocol benefiting an endless variety of human applications. The success of the methodology has been accented by the wide range of applications embracing it. Theresa now consults and designs TAGteach programs in business management\, industrial safety\, medical\, and surgical training\, sport coaching\, family communication\, and\, of course\, training for those who teach people to train their companion animals. She is the author of the newly minted book\, Don’t Nag… TAG!: Success the First Time with TAGteach. Theresa is a sought-after speaker across the United States and around the world\, including in Europe\, the U.K.\, Taiwan\, Japan\, Australia\, and New Zealand. \nLearn more about Theresa and TAGteach on her website\, on Facebook\, and on Twitter. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://theranch.clickertraining.com/live/#next
