SUMMARY:Online Event - 6/25/20 - Live From the Ranch - Ken Ramirez with Theresa McKeon - TAGteach - Using Positive Reinforcement with Humans to Influence Behavior - Karen Pryor Academy
DESCRIPTION:LIVE FROM THE RANCH\n\nJoin Ken Ramirez\, KPCT’s Chief Training Officer\, for a free hour-long virtual event live from The Ranch on Thursday\, June 25 at 12:00 pm (PT). Ken will be joined by Theresa McKeon to talk TAGteach and the myriad of applications of this invaluable teaching tool. Your TAG point is… tune in! \nKen Ramirez \n\n\nKen is the EVP and Chief Training Officer at Karen Pryor Clicker Training\, co-leading the company with Aaron Clayton. Ken oversees the vision for\, and development of\, training education programs. You will usually find Ken teaching at a ClickerExpo conference\, leading a course at the Karen Pryor National Training Center (The Ranch)\, or teaching one of the Karen Pryor Academy courses. \nA 40+ year veteran of animal care and training\, Ken is a biologist and behaviorist who has supervised the development care and training of more than 40\,000 species. He has worked with organizations across the globe to improve animal training\, program effectiveness\, and animal health and welfare. Ken’s diverse body of contributions includes designing and implementing conservation projects for elephant protection and spearheading projects to train everything from komodo dragons to butterflies. Ken’s extensive canine work includes working with trainers\, organizations\, and federal and state agencies on training procedures for topics including aggression\, search-and-rescue\, and scent detection. \nKen has written/edited two successful books\, taught at a major university\, hosted two successful seasons of the television series Talk to the Animals\, and was EVP of animal care and training at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. When he’s not doing cool stuff with animals and people\, you might find Ken at a NY theater or at any movie screening. \n\nTheresa McKeon \nAfter more than 30 years as a national-level gymnastics coach\, Theresa was determined to find a way to speed up skill acquisition for her athletes while simultaneously decreasing stress and fear in the learning environment. Her search for behaviorally sound techniques\, clean instructions\, and the proper timing of feedback and reinforcement\, led to the development of the TAGteach methodology. Theresa teamed with Joan Orr\, Beth Wheeler\, and Aaron Clayton and Karen Pryor of Karen Pryor Clicker Training to found TAGteach International\, LLC. \nSince then\, TAGteach has evolved into an entire teaching protocol benefiting an endless variety of human applications. The success of the methodology has been accented by the wide range of applications embracing it. Theresa now consults and designs TAGteach programs in business management\, industrial safety\, medical\, and surgical training\, sport coaching\, family communication\, and\, of course\, training for those who teach people to train their companion animals. She is the author of the newly minted book\, Don’t Nag… TAG!: Success the First Time with TAGteach. Theresa is a sought-after speaker across the United States and around the world\, including in Europe\, the U.K.\, Taiwan\, Japan\, Australia\, and New Zealand. \nLearn more about Theresa and TAGteach on her website\, on Facebook\, and on Twitter. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://theranch.clickertraining.com/live/#next

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/30/20 - Is Mission Creep Killing Your Agency? - NACA - Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are part of a non-profit or municipal agency\, Animal Welfare Organizations have to operate within a budget.  Organizations find themselves trying to meet the needs of citizens\, both two and four-legged. However\, animal welfare organizations find themselves at a crossroads between responding to requests for service and adhering to the mission of the organization. In the never-ending struggle to please everyone\, is your organization’s mission taking a backseat to placating the next complaint? In this session\, we will explore some of the common pitfalls organizations fall into that compete with their mission. \n  \n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nBased out of Daytona Beach\, Florida\, Adam Leath is the Director of Volusia County Animal Services. There he investigates and responds to situations involving animal victims of natural disasters and animal cruelty cases. Leath was\, formerly\, the Southeast Regional Director of the Field Investigations and Response Team at the ASPCA.  There he aided jurisdictions at the local\, state\, and federal levels investigating crimes against animals. While in that position\, Leath led one of the largest operations in ASPCA history with the seizure of over 1\,000 animals in August of 2016. Leath also successfully investigated one of the largest cockfighting cases in Florida history\, resulting in the seizure of more than 650 birds and numerous arrests. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second largest dog fighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is the immediate past president of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. Leath has been certified as an expert witness in animal fighting and animal cruelty in the state of Florida and in New York. \nWebsite:  https://justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/is-mission-creep-killing-your-agency/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 7/1/20 - Communicating in a Divided America - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Commitment To Action\, The Association will continue offering resources and learning opportunities designed to further the eradication of systemic discrimination and racism in animal welfare. \nIt’s no secret that our nation is deeply divided along political and social lines\, especially right now. SUMMARY:Online Meeting - CASCAR - 7/7/20 - California Animal Shelters - UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
DESCRIPTION:Given the craziness that can afflict animal shelters around the July 4th weekend we were thinking of cancelling next Tuesday’s CASCAR call. However\, there were lots of questions after the webinar we did for Cal Animals during the usual CASCAR slot this week and we didn’t get to all of them\, so we figured we could use the time to answer those if there are any lingering. And we are working on a follow up\, more tactical session on racial and social justice in California animal sheltering/community animal management\, hopefully to really dig into policies and practices that will result in meaningful shifts. If you have questions and ideas to inform planning that would be welcome. Or just in general if you want to drop in and say hi – the truth is we just like to see you all! \nSo\, low key and don’t worry if you can’t make it this week\, but we’ll be hanging out at the usual spot at 10 a.m. on Tuesday July 7th: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg. \nAnd as always\, if you have questions or suggestions for future CASCAR call topics\, email us at CASCAR@sheltermedicine.com. \nHope your fourth of July weekend is not too hectic and all the pets and people stay safe! \nKate \nKate F.
