SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/3/21 - Working with Dogs That Lack Enthusiasm - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Some dogs just don’t appear to be enthusiastic about training. This may present as a lack of enthusiasm for all training related activities\, or it may be specific to a certain sport or individual task (e.g. dumbbell retrieve). In some cases\, the dog may even appear to lose interest in training after a period of what appeared to be enthusiastic\, engaged work. \nThe observable behaviors may include: \n\nResponding slowly to cues\, needing repeated cues\, or stopping responding altogether.\nLeaving you or the training area during a session.\nAvoiding eye contact with you or the task.\nEngaging in displacement behaviors such as sniffing the ground during an active training session.\nDeveloping a reluctance to join you at the start of a training session.\n\nIn this webinar we discuss common reasons why these behaviors may occur\, including: \n\nFeeling fearful\, anxious\, frustrated\, or conflicted.\nPhysical limitations.\nLow levels of mental stamina.\nSensitivity to making mistakes.\nSensitivity to changes in the environment.\nImpact of prior learning history.\n\nMost importantly\, we also discuss simple strategies to put the enthusiasm back into the training process\, for both the dog and the human! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar – 6/7/21 – MAC 2021 Webinar Series – The Future of Sheltering: Human Animal Support Services – Massachusetts Animal Coalition
DESCRIPTION:What if there was a way animal welfare organizations could meaningfully address and solve the root causes of why animals enter shelters in the first place? The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project is a collaborative effort of more than 500 animal welfare experts\, 40 shelters and 36 working groups that are aiming to do just that. In the process\, big lessons are being learned\, revolutionary changes are happening\, barriers in the community are broken down as the community becomes more involved – all allowing animals and people to stay together. \nLearn about: \n\nThe different components of HASS\, how these components work to break down barriers making adoption\, fostering\, vet care etc accessible to all communities and how you can easily implement them in your organization.\nProven strategies for reducing intake and housing more pets outside of the shelter.\nEmbracing technology\, repurposing staff\, and accomplishing the HASS model without a lot of extra funding.\nUtilizing Volunteers in ways you never imagined to make all of this possible.\n\nSpeaker Information \nKristen Hassen is the Director of Maddie’s American Pets Alive!\, overseeing the Maddie’s Academy\, Human Animal Support Services\, and other lifesaving initiatives. Kristen formerly served as the Director of Pima Animal Care Center\, an open admission\, government animal shelter in Tucson\, Arizona with an intake of 20\,000 animals annually and a live release rate of 93%. While at PACC\, Kristen launched many of the Human Animal Support Services initiatives\, including building the nation’s largest municipal shelter foster program\, with 5\,500 pets going to foster care annually. Before that\, Kristen served as the Deputy Director at Austin Animal Center\, in Austin\, Texas and the Assistant Director at Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Fairfax\, Virginia. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dmv5lydab&oeidk=a07ehw9aaoj0f484258

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/9/21 - Thinking Outside the Snot: Shelter Medicine Approaches to Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats - EveryCat Health Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Cats in animal shelters are uniquely prone to upper respiratory infections\, aka URI or “the cat common cold”. These infections are complicated. They are inextricably tied to stress and crowding in cats. They can be caused by a number of viruses and bacteria. You can’t vaccinate or treat your way out of an established URI problem. Affected cats are often treated with antibiotics\, even though infections are often viral\, and this can result in poor appetite\, vomiting\, diarrhea and resistant infections. Chronic URI can be a nightmare for shelters and adopters\, and can sometimes cause severe health issues. \nThis presentation will focus on newer shelter medicine approaches to URI – prevention strategies that have succeeded to the point that many shelters no longer have a “URI problem”; when to isolate affected cats and when that’s not needed; when diagnostic tests are needed and which ones are useful; when to treat and with what; and how to manage a newly adopted cat that is sneezing. RACE Approved! \nDr. Linda Jacobson obtained her veterinary degree in Pretoria\, South Africa\, in 1986\, and went on to specialize in companion animal internal medicine. She has been at the Toronto Humane Society since 2010\, where she is currently Senior Manager\, Shelter Medicine Advancement. \nIn 2015 she completed a Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine through the University of Florida. Linda is co-founder and President and Treasurer of the Ontario Shelter Medicine Association. She serves on the Standard of Care Working Group of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and Toronto Humane Society’s Unsocial Cat Working Group.  Her professional passions and interests include accessible veterinary care\, infectious diseases\, animal hoarding\, and evidence-based medicine. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://everycat.org/thinking-outside-the-snot-shelter-medicine-approaches-to-upper-respiratory-infections-in-cats/

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/16/21 - Access to Veterinary Care: Community Care Models to Prevent Relinquishment - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Many animals are surrendered to shelters due to medical issues that an owner cannot afford to treat\, but many of these owners would keep their pets if they could. There is usually no option for low cost/free\, full-service (incremental care) medicine\, due to laws\, vet associations\, and a lack of providers. The situation is also complicated by the lack of data to help target a solution to an affordable level. We’ll discuss how to calculate a goal and fit a solution to your shelter’s needs. Learn about the 3 types of medical care that communities can start providing to families now in an effort to decrease shelter surrender and increase reclaim of pets with inaccessible medical needs. \nThis webinar will especially benefit shelter medical staff\, shelter executives\, and other operational leaders. \nThis session is part of the Shelter Medicine series\, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. \nThis live and recorded program is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit and pending approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE. \nIf you wish to earn RACE CEs\, you MUST submit your veterinary/tech license number + license state when you join the live session or after you watch recording (due to new AAVSB RACE requirements)!  Participants have to attend at least 50 minutes of the live session / watch 50 minutes of the recording in order to receive the 1-hour credit of RACE CE. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/61621-access-to-veterinary-care-community-care-models-to-prevent-relinquishment
