SUMMARY:CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters - 6/1/21 - Sheltering by Appointment - CASCAR - UC Davis KSMP
DESCRIPTION:If there’s one thing you’ve shared with us over the duration of this pandemic\, it’s how beneficial more control over shelter intake and\, more broadly\, the shelter environment has been for both staff and animals. Some of you are rethinking how you’ll handle adoptions going forward\, many of you have committed to reopening with service by appointment as the new norm\, and others are trying on a hybrid approach. \nAs California prepares to fully reopen in less than three weeks\, we’re opening the CASCAR floor to hear from you this Tuesday: When it comes to sheltering by appointment\, where are you now? What’s working and where are the biggest wins being gained so far? Where are the biggest challenges and fears still hanging out? What’s the one thing still standing in your way? \nCASCAR room link: https://sheltermedicine.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJQtdO-srDItyMz7xy-ZsncbcFa6s8kKZg

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/2/21 - How to Handle Aggression Calls When you Don't Handle Aggression - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is for the dog trainer\, shelter worker\, rescue worker\, groomer\, or animal control officer. When someone calls with a “my dog is aggressive/ has bitten etc” call and that isn’t your “lane” how do we ethically and effectively get those owners seeking help to proper professionals in a quick\, informative\, and safe way? \nLearn to address this without leaving an owner trying to handle the abyss of our unregulated industry only to end up with the wrong person and an all-around bad experience we hear and see all too often. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify ways this person can manage their situation in the immediate.\nGet them to quickly understand why a vet visit for this is necessary.\nGet them to understand that they are being referred out.\nKnow how to find someone you can refer to and what evidence-based resources the owner has access to learn from in the meantime\n\nAbout Your Presenter \nTabitha Davies CPDT-KA\, ACDBC\, FF-C\, CTDI \nTabitha was born and raised in a small town in Ontario\, Canada and moved to Southern California in the 90’s. She always dreamed of being a veterinarian\, during high school she started an internship program that provided her the opportunity to work as a veterinary technician in a clinic located in Palm Desert. \nShortly after starting the internship\, she quickly realized how many dogs were being euthanized for behavior issues and how little access there was to trainers in the area. Tabitha discussed her concerns with the veterinarians and with their encouragment started to pursue her education in canine behavior. \nTabitha spent the next year raiding local libraries and reading every book on training\, behavior and the evolution of canids. She eventually graduated highschool and continued working as a veterinary technician while training her own dogs and horses. \nTabitha has been training professionally for over 17 years and handling behavior cases for the past 9 years. She is currently certified with CPDT-KA\, ACDBC\, FF-C\, CTDI\, and is working towards PCBC-A. She has a farm which includes goats\, horses\, chickens\, tortoises\, turtles\, pig\, cat\, and dogs and all of them are rescued or adopted. Tabitha also has three wonderful children and my best friend\, the man who keeps us all together. \n  \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-4280745

SUMMARY:Online Event - 6/3/21 - Maddie's Candid Conversation Series - Gabrielle Chapman & Justin Marceau - Maddie's Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of Maddie’s Candid Conversation where we will be talking with Justin Marceau\, author of Beyond Cages: Animal Law and Criminal Punishment. The discussion will center around the role of fines and fees\, civil penalties\, conviction and punishment in achieving positive outcomes for animals – and how current enforcement models can in fact produce negative consequences for companion animals which can hinder the goal of lifesaving. Gabrielle Chapman\, a social justice analyst\, will facilitate the conversation\, moderate your questions about how systemic racism plays a role\, and share ways we can more effectively support companion animals and their families. \nAbout the speakers:\nGabrielle Chapman is a Social Justice Analyst at The Woodrow Consulting Firm. She formerly worked as a Senior Social Justice Analyst with The Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life program where she lent her expertise about how systemic racism is perpetuated within animal welfare. She helps bring forth an increased consciousness about systemic racism and other forms of oppression which can hinder growth and well-being for communities and their companion animals. Her consulting work is informed by her knowledge across racial justice\, food/land justice\, and animal rights/welfare\, using a One Health model that strives to develop solutions and build relationships from a socio-ecological perspective. \nJustin F. Marceau is a Professor of Law and the Animal Legal Defense Fund Professor at the University of Denver. He is also the Brooks Institute Faculty Research Scholar of Animal Law and Policy\, and an affiliated faculty member with the Institute for Human Animal Connections at the Graduate School of Social Work. Professor Marceau also serves as the reporter for the pattern criminal jury instruction committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit\, and he is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. \n\n\n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://maddiesfund-org.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAodOyorjstG9QY17u6vkbLU49uVSD6tI59

SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/3/21 - Working with Dogs That Lack Enthusiasm - FDSA (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:Some dogs just don’t appear to be enthusiastic about training. This may present as a lack of enthusiasm for all training related activities\, or it may be specific to a certain sport or individual task (e.g. dumbbell retrieve). In some cases\, the dog may even appear to lose interest in training after a period of what appeared to be enthusiastic\, engaged work. \nThe observable behaviors may include: \n\nResponding slowly to cues\, needing repeated cues\, or stopping responding altogether.\nLeaving you or the training area during a session.\nAvoiding eye contact with you or the task.\nEngaging in displacement behaviors such as sniffing the ground during an active training session.\nDeveloping a reluctance to join you at the start of a training session.\n\nIn this webinar we discuss common reasons why these behaviors may occur\, including: \n\nFeeling fearful\, anxious\, frustrated\, or conflicted.\nPhysical limitations.\nLow levels of mental stamina.\nSensitivity to making mistakes.\nSensitivity to changes in the environment.\nImpact of prior learning history.\n\nMost importantly\, we also discuss simple strategies to put the enthusiasm back into the training process\, for both the dog and the human! \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar – 6/7/21 – MAC 2021 Webinar Series – The Future of Sheltering: Human Animal Support Services – Massachusetts Animal Coalition
DESCRIPTION:What if there was a way animal welfare organizations could meaningfully address and solve the root causes of why animals enter shelters in the first place? The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project is a collaborative effort of more than 500 animal welfare experts\, 40 shelters and 36 working groups that are aiming to do just that. In the process\, big lessons are being learned\, revolutionary changes are happening\, barriers in the community are broken down as the community becomes more involved – all allowing animals and people to stay together. \nLearn about: \n\nThe different components of HASS\, how these components work to break down barriers making adoption\, fostering\, vet care etc accessible to all communities and how you can easily implement them in your organization.\nProven strategies for reducing intake and housing more pets outside of the shelter.\nEmbracing technology\, repurposing staff\, and accomplishing the HASS model without a lot of extra funding.\nUtilizing Volunteers in ways you never imagined to make all of this possible.\n\nSpeaker Information \nKristen Hassen is the Director of Maddie’s American Pets Alive!\, overseeing the Maddie’s Academy\, Human Animal Support Services\, and other lifesaving initiatives. Kristen formerly served as the Director of Pima Animal Care Center\, an open admission\, government animal shelter in Tucson\, Arizona with an intake of 20\,000 animals annually and a live release rate of 93%. SUMMARY:Webinar - 6/9/21 - Thinking Outside the Snot: Shelter Medicine Approaches to Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats - EveryCat Health Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Cats in animal shelters are uniquely prone to upper respiratory infections\, aka URI or “the cat common cold”. These infections are complicated. They are inextricably tied to stress and crowding in cats. They can be caused by a number of viruses and bacteria. You can’t vaccinate or treat your way out of an established URI problem. Affected cats are often treated with antibiotics\, even though infections are often viral\, and this can result in poor appetite\, vomiting\, diarrhea and resistant infections. Chronic URI can be a nightmare for shelters and adopters\, and can sometimes cause severe health issues. \nThis presentation will focus on newer shelter medicine approaches to URI – prevention strategies that have succeeded to the point that many shelters no longer have a “URI problem”; when to isolate affected cats and when that’s not needed; when diagnostic tests are needed and which ones are useful; when to treat and with what; and how to manage a newly adopted cat that is sneezing. RACE Approved! \nDr. Linda Jacobson obtained her veterinary degree in Pretoria\, South Africa\, in 1986\, and went on to specialize in companion animal internal medicine. She has been at the Toronto Humane Society since 2010\, where she is currently Senior Manager\, Shelter Medicine Advancement. \nIn 2015 she completed a Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine through the University of Florida. Linda is co-founder and President and Treasurer of the Ontario Shelter Medicine Association. She serves on the Standard of Care Working Group of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and Toronto Humane Society’s Unsocial Cat Working Group.  Her professional passions and interests include accessible veterinary care\, infectious diseases\, animal hoarding\, and evidence-based medicine. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://everycat.org/thinking-outside-the-snot-shelter-medicine-approaches-to-upper-respiratory-infections-in-cats/
