SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/1/20 - Enhancing Your Managed Intake Process - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:So you have begun to manage your intake procedures\, this may mean scheduled owner surrender hours or limited days of intake\, not it’s time to take a step back and assess how the program is working.  This session will help to guide you through a program analysis of your managed intake program and provide some suggestions for the next steps and ways that other agencies have taken a basic program and moved it to the next level! \n  \nThis is the second of a two-part series. \n\nAug 11: Getting Started with Managed Intake \nOct 1:  Enhancing Your Managed Intake Process (this webinar)\n\n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nDr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine\, public health\, veterinary sciences\, informatics\, and healthcare administration.  He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices\, cooperate practices\, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine\, county government\, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. \nA strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry\, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research.  His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention\, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics\, strategic planning\, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare.  His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers\, develop relationships\, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices. \nIt is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/enhancing-your-managed-intake-process/

SUMMARY:Online Event - 10/1/20 - The Roundtable: Community Relations During A Time of Unrest - The AAWA
DESCRIPTION:Barriers to community engagement isn’t a new challenge for animal services\, but a global pandemic and social unrest bring added burden to these essential employees. Hear from four animal services leaders guiding their cities through a difficult climate: Dallas\, Greensboro (NC)\, and Los Angeles. \nThis exclusive roundtable conversation will explore the challenges animal support service professionals are currently facing with a special emphasis on BIPOC officers and staff. Learn from their experience so you can engage your community in conversations of equity and justice and provide support with kindness and fairness.  Questions from the audience will follow the roundtable discussion. \nThe Roundtable Moderators:\n• Jim Tedford\, President and CEO\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement\n• Gabrielle Chapman\, Senior Analyst\, Social Justice\, Pets for Life\, The Humane Society of the United States \nThe Roundtable Guests:\n• Allison Cardona – Deputy Director\, Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control\, CA\n• Ed Jamison – Director\, Animal Services\, Dallas\, Texas\n• Jorge Ortega – Director\, Guilford County Animal Services\, NC \nThis roundtable has been pre-approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit. \n  \n\n\nAllison Cardona\nDeputy Director\, Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control\, CA\nAllison Cardona has been a Deputy Director of South County Operations for the Department since March 2017. As Deputy Director of South County\, Allison oversees the Carson/Gardena\, Downey and Baldwin Park Animal Care Centers along with special programs such as behavior and enrichment. Prior to joining the County of Los Angeles\, Allison spent over 13 years as a program director for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). She holds a B.S. in Public Affairs from Empire State College. Allison is dedicated to keeping pets and people forever together\, removing barriers so pet owners have access to care and services. Allison serves as the department’s liaison to the County of Los Angeles Homeless Initiative\, helping to integrate pet-friendly services into service planning and delivery. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nEd Jamison\nDirector of Dallas Animal Services\, City of Dallas\nDallas has the third largest intake in the United States\, with over 39\,000 dogs and cats coming into their care in 2019. Ed Jamison has been tasked with increasing public safety by getting loose animals off the streets\, while at the same time increasing positive outcomes. To accomplish that\, Jamison is leading a staff of around 220 employees\, maximizing relationships with the rescue community\, rebuilding the volunteer base and instituting new\, progressive programming. Prior to coming to Dallas\, Jamison was the Chief Animal Control Officer for the City of Cleveland\, Ohio\, but he entered the animal care and control world in the mid-2000s while he was the animal warden for the City of Garfield Heights\, a suburb of Cleveland. In his time serving Cleveland\, Ed made a push to redefine the way animal control functions and re-brand the public’s perception of the industry\, along with the perception of pit-bull-type dogs. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nJorge Ortega\nDirector\, Guilford County Animal Services\, North Carolina\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabrielle Chapman\nSenior Social Justice Analyst\, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\nGabrielle Chapman is the former Executive Director of Call to Action for Racial Equality\, West Virginia’s first professional statewide racial equity coalition. She is a 2018–2019 Soros Justice Fellow with the Open Society Foundation and serves as a Board of Director for West Virginia’s Center on Budget and Policy and West Virginia Women’s Health Center. Chapman holds a BS in Applied Biology from Russell Sage College. During her college years\, she interned at the U.S. Department of Defense\, was an assistant with Sage College’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program\, and volunteered with the American Friends Service Committee. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nJim Tedford\, CAWA\nPresident & CEO\, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement\nJim Tedford accepted his dream job when he joined The Association as President & CEO in June of 2015.  But Jim is no stranger to the organization.  He has been a member for nearly 30 years and served as our Board Chairman some twenty years ago.  Jim has been actively engaged in the animal welfare movement for more than 34 years having served as CEO for animal sheltering organizations in New York\, Louisiana and Tennessee.  He served as a regional director for The Humane Society of the United States and then spent six years providing direct response marketing services to animal welfare organizations. Jim presents frequently at national and regional conferences on various animal welfare issues\, organizational development and not-for-profit management. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/p/RT-100120#tab-product_tab_speaker_s

We enjoy our dogs so much\, yet they don’t always enjoy each other. Just witnessing a physical altercation between dogs can be traumatic. Why does this happen? Do the dogs simply dislike each other? Or is there more to it than that? \nAccurate assessment is not always easy but it is essential. This webinar will teach you tips that will help you evaluate the relationship between your own dogs. Once the reason for conflict is clear\, a personalized treatment and management plan can be designed. \n* Click here to register ** \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/index.php/self-study/webinars

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/2/20 - Stressed Out: Dogs\, Hormones and Stress - Dr. Jessica Hekman - PPG (fee applies)
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: PPAB 1\, CCPDT 1\, IAABC 1\, KPA 1 \n\nAnxiety is a major problem for many pet dogs. What happens in your dog’s brain and body when something scares her? How long can you expect her stress response to last? \nIn this webinar\, Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\, will talk about the stress response in dogs. She will explain the original evolutionary purpose of the stress response; what the hormones involved in it (like cortisol) do in the body; the difference between acute and chronic stress and the different effects they have on dogs’ health; and what we know about how long it takes the body to clear those hormones. You will definitely learn some cool stuff about how the brain works and what that means for your stressed-out dog! \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe how the stress response functions and what its purpose is.\nDescribe health effects (both positive and negative!) for acute versus chronic stress.\nExplain how the stress response affects the dog’s brain and their ability to think clearly and behave normally.\nDescribe how long it takes the stress response to clear from the body\, and list possible alternative explanations for dogs who display signs of stress longer than it takes for stress hormones to be cleared.\n\n\n\nAbout The Presenter\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jessica Hekman\, DVM\, PhD\n \n\nJessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer\, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts\, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation\, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate\, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs\, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs\, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond\, NH with her husband and three dogs. You can follow her on Twitter @dogzombieblog or on Facebook at facebook.com/dogzombieblog. \n\nWEBSITE LINK:  https://petprofessionalguild.com/event-3702930

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/6/20 - Looking Back to Look Forward: Why Fear and Bias Have Weakened the Animal Welfare Movement - The AAWA and PetFinder Pro
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Petfinder Pro Adoption Options Series:\nLooking Back to Look Forward: Why Fear and Bias Have Weakened the Animal Welfare Movement — and How We Can Seize This Opportunity To Change That\nThe animal welfare field is fueled by compassionate individuals who share a deep love of animals. At the same time\, that compassion has not always been extended to the other side of the leash. Fear and bias have created structural barriers to adoption\, unequal access to pet care resources\, and missed opportunities to accomplish our lifesaving goals. Together\, we will learn how to identify outdated practices and policies while addressing the underlying\, well-intentioned concerns that have kept them in place. \nAttendees will hear how peer organizations throughout the United States have embraced a fresh and more equitable approach to supporting the bond between pets and the diverse range of people who love them. The future of animal welfare is bright and we have an unprecedented opportunity to make positive change!  \nThis webinar has been pre-approved for: \n\n1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit\n1 CE towards ACO CE requirements per Ch. 829 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)\n\nPetfinder members who participate are eligible for exclusive Petfinder Foundation grant opportunities. \n\nTo register for Adoption Options workshops\, log in with your Association username and password OR create a FREE “Learning Non-Member” account. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://learning.theaawa.org/products/looking-back-to-look-forward-why-fear-and-bias-have-weakened-the-animal-welfare-movement

SUMMARY:Webinar - 10/8/20 - Custody Considerations in Animal Control - NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
DESCRIPTION:Does your agency investigate and respond to criminal cases involving animals? How do you obtain legal custody of the animal victims? Animals are property under the law\, which means agencies who remove them from their owners must ensure they are standing on solid legal ground. Agencies seizing animals in criminal cases face many challenges. Animals are the evidence of the crime but\, with time\, their conditions change. Wounds heal and illness and disease are treated. The evidentiary value of the animals’ condition diminishes as they recover.  Therefore\, by the time the case goes to court\, the current condition of the animal or its presence in the courtroom is not necessary to make the case.  Animal victims deserve to recover and be placed into a suitable permanent home as quickly as possible. This session will explore civil remedies agencies have to secure custody of seized animals. \n  \nOther Webinars in this Series with Adam include: \n\nEngagement of Public-Private Partnerships in Animal Cruelty Investigations\nJune 30: Is Mission Creep Killing Your Agency?\nOct 8: Custody Considerations in Animal Control (this webinar)\nDec 8: What Your Boss Wished You Knew: Professionalism in an Increasingly Unprofessional World\n\n  \n\n \n  \nThe National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership. \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:\n\n\n\nBased out of Daytona Beach\, Florida\, Adam Leath is the Director of Volusia County Animal Services. He investigates and responds to situations involving animal victims of natural disasters and animal cruelty cases in Volusia County.  Leath was formerly a Regional Director of the Field Investigations and Response Team at the ASPCA where he led one of the largest operations in ASPCA history with the seizure of over 1\,000 animals in August of 2016. Leath also successfully investigated one of the largest cockfighting cases in Florida history\, resulting in the seizure of more than 650 birds and numerous arrests. Leath has responded to multiple dogfighting operations throughout his time at the ASPCA\, including the second-largest dogfighting bust in U.S. history in 2013\, resulting in the seizure of more than 400 dogs. \nLeath holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Tennessee and a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida. He is a courtesy Assistant Professor for the Department of Comparative\, Diagnostic\, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.  Leath is a Past President of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and is a Certified National Animal Cruelty Investigator through the University of Missouri. He has also been certified in Equine Cruelty Investigation through the University of Colorado. Leath has been certified as an expert witness in animal fighting and animal cruelty in the states of Florida and New York. \nWEBSITE LINK:  https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/webinar/custody-considerations-in-animal-control/
